Sociodemographic Determinants of Timely Hip Dysplasia Ultrasound Screening.

BACKGROUND: Breech presentation is a strong risk factor for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a condition that, when diagnosed late, can lead to poor outcomes. Accordingly, it is recommended that breech-born infants undergo hip ultrasound (US) screening at 6 weeks or receive an anteriorpostierior (AP) pelvic radiograph at 6 months of age to enable early detection and timely intervention. Research evaluating guideline adherence and the factors influencing screening outcomes remain limited. In this study, we investigate sociodemographic factors that influence delayed or missed US screeni

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals with chemical intolerance.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine if the COVID-19 pandemic had differential effects on individuals with chemical intolerances (CI). CI is characterised by multisystem symptoms initiated by a one-time high dose or persistent low-dose exposure to environmental toxins including chemicals, foods and drugs. With an estimated 20% US prevalence, symptoms include fatigue, headache, weakness, rash, mood changes, musculoskeletal pain, gastrointestinal issues, difficulties with memory, concentration and respiratory problems, which are similar to COVID-19 and its sequelae. DESIGN: A U

Differential Effects of US State Firearm Policies on Black and Non-Black Firearm Homicide and Suicide, 1981‒2022.

Objectives. To estimate the effects of 7 state firearm policies on yearly rates of firearm mortality (homicide and suicide) among racial demographic groups. Methods. We studied yearly firearm homicide and suicide counts by race for all US states from 1981 to 2022 via de-biased, autoregressive, Bayesian negative binomial models. Results. Permissive policies were associated with 1.97 more homicides (86% posterior probability of increased mortality; 80% credible interval [CrI] = -0.31, 4.38) and 0.32 more suicides (93% probability of increase; 80% CrI = 0.04, 0.58) per 100 000 Black population. Blood and urine manganese exposure in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and advanced liver fibrosis: an observational study.

Manganese was the key activator of biological enzymes-mediated metabolic diseases (Mets)-associated pathophysiological process. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which was the hepatic manifestation of Mets, development remained a mystery. We aimed to explore the association between blood/urine manganese exposure and NAFLD and liver fibrosis diagnosed by vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE). All data were extracted from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database (2017-2018). A total of 3580 participants with blood manganese data were enrolled and divided in

Treatment patterns and burden of complications associated with sickle cell disease: A US retrospective claims analysis.

Complications associated with sickle cell disease (SCD) that are highly impactful for patients but until recently have been less understood include priapism, nephropathy, and neurologic injury. We conducted a retrospective study using US administrative claims data from July 01, 2013 through March 31, 2020 to analyze incidence of these complications, SCD treatment patterns, and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) and costs among 2524 pediatric and adult patients with SCD (mean [SD] age 43.4 [22.4] years). The most common treatments during follow-up were short-acting opioids (54.0% of patient

Cytologic follow-up in patients with CIN treated by LLETZ, Cold knife Conization and Semm's cold coagulation.

Management of cervical premalignant lesions starts with abnormal Pap smear. Regular screening of asymptomatic women (the Pap smear) allows us to diagnose and treat preinvasive lesions before they progress to cervical cancer. There is a wide variety of ablative and destructive methods used in treatment of cervical premalignant lesions. In this study we have compared follow-up cytology results in patient groups treated by LLETZ (Large Loop Excision of the Transformation Zone), Cold Knife Conization (CKC) and Semm's cold coagulation (Electrocoagulation, ECG) according to CIN on target biopsy spec

Patch testing with methyldibromoglutaronitrile in a localized population in the United States.

BACKGROUND: in Europe, methyldibromoglutaronitrile (MDGN) was banned because of excessive rates of contact allergy. However, it is unclear whether the concentrations used for testing MDGN are optimal, as different groups have used varying concentrations with quite different rates of positive reactions. OBJECTIVES: to report patch-test results with MDGN in a localized US population, to compare these results with those of other studies, and to evaluate any association between contact allergy to MDGN and atopic dermatitis. METHODS: a retrospective analysis of 1,753 patients tested with various

The effect on pregnancy rates of tubal perfusion pressure reductions achieved by guide-wire tubal catheterization.

BACKGROUND: Selective salpingography enables us to measure the Fallopian tube perfusion pressure which, when high, can be effectively reduced with the use of transcervical guide-wire tubal catheterization. Whether fertility prognosis improves as a result is currently unknown. Our objective was to clarify the issue. METHODS: Infertile women undergoing selective salpingography were classified into poor, mediocre and good tubal perfusion pressure groups, based on the distribution of tubal perfusion pressures in an unselected infertile population. Of 325 women, 150 (46.1%) were classified in the

Ultrasonographic frequency of complex aortic plaques in patients with atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: The presence of aortic plaque is an important risk factor for stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). A history of vascular disease, defined as the presence of complex aortic plaque (CAP), constitutes one of the components of the CHA₂DS₂-VA score. However, data regarding the frequency of abdominal aortic (AA) plaques in patients with AF are limited in the literature. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of AA-CAP and its associated parameters in patients with AF. METHOD: A total of 748-patients with AF who underwent abdominal ultrasonography (

Cognitive Trajectory Before and After Cataract Surgery: A Population-Based Approach.

BACKGROUND: Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed for older US adults. Cataracts are associated with poor cognition and higher rates of dementia, but whether cataract surgery improves cognition for US older adults is not known. We examined the relationship between cataract surgery and long-term change in cognition in the Health and Retirement Study, a population-based study of older US adults linked with Medicare billing data. METHODS: We analyzed community-dwelling participants who underwent cataract surgery between 2000 and 2018, propensity-matched on age, sex, ed

Age-specific trends in limitations of daily activities in American adults aged 50-84 by race and ethnicity, 2000-2018.

During the first decade of the 2000s, disability levels began to stagnate or increase among American adults, a sharp departure from broad declines observed in earlier decades. It is unclear whether these adverse trends have continued after 2010, and whether there are variations by age group, sex, race/ethnicity, and nativity status. We used data from the 2000-2018 National Health Interview Survey to investigate trends in limitations of activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) by age group, race/ethnicity, and nativity among the 50 + population. We eva

The effect of cannabis use on postoperative complications in patients undergoing spine surgery: A national database study.

BACKGROUND: With the increased use of cannabis in the US, there is a significant need to understand the medical complications associated with its use in relationship to a surgical population. Cannabis has mainly been studied with respect to its qualities of pain treatment, yet few studies have investigated post-surgical complications associated with its use. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the effect of cannabis use on complications in spine surgery, and compare these complications rates to opioid-related complications. METHODS: This was a retrospective study conducted usi

Race- and Sex-Specific Population Attributable Fractions of Incident Heart Failure: A Population-Based Cohort Study From the Lifetime Risk Pooling Project.

BACKGROUND: Race- and sex-specific differences in heart failure (HF) risk may be related to differential burden and effect of risk factors. We estimated the population attributable fraction (PAF), which incorporates both prevalence and excess risk of HF associated with each risk factor (obesity, hypertension, diabetes, current smoking, and hyperlipidemia), in specific race-sex groups. METHODS: A pooled cohort was created using harmonized data from 6 US longitudinal population-based cohorts. Baseline measurements of risk factors were used to determine prevalence. Relative risk of incident HF w
