Repeated Health Screening Measures and Incident Ischemic Stroke: Evidence From a Korean Population Study.

OBJECTIVES: Ischemic stroke is influenced by long-term metabolic and renal deterioration; however, many risk prediction frameworks rely on single time-point measurements. We examined whether multi-period patterns in national health screening indicators are associated with incident ischemic stroke in Korea. METHODS: Using customized National Health Insurance Service data with 3 biennial screenings (P1: 2013-2014; P2: 2015-2016; P3: 2017-2018), we identified incident ischemic stroke during 2019-2023 (Korean Standard Classification of Diseases-7 I63). After applying eligibility criteria and excl

Does the environmental protection tax improve population health? Evidence from China's quasi-natural experiment.

Health constitutes a fundamental component of human capital for high-quality economic development and an important indicator of social well-being. Using panel data for 31 Chinese provinces from 2010 to 2023, this study treats the implementation of the Environmental Protection Tax Law of the People's Republic of China in 2018 as a quasi-natural experiment and employs a difference-in-differences model to systematically identify the effect of the environmental protection tax policy on population health. The results show that, first, the environmental protection tax policy significantly improves p…

A global measurement tool to assess population health literacy fits all? A critical paper.

Health literacy (HL) is considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an important determinant of health and several instruments have been elaborated and adapted to measure this construct. In 2022, a group of researchers started a project aimed at developing a HL assessment instrument with global applicability, based on different versions of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q). This article critically analyses the characteristics of those instruments to help improve health assessment practices and avoiding omitting measurement of locally important information, t

Longitudinal Lifestyle Profiles Influence Health Trajectories in Aging: Evidence from a Population-Based Sample.

INTRODUCTION: As the global population is aging at an accelerated pace, understanding how changes in modifiable lifestyles are related to positive health outcomes is crucial. This study aimed to discover the distinct profile of changes in lifestyle habits during aging, and their impact on cognitive, mental, and physical health. Next, we rated the unique contribution of each lifestyle on health outcomes. METHODS: The study was conducted on 966 older adults from the InveCe.Ab population-based cohort, all dementia-free at baseline (70-75 years), with at least three multidimensional assessments p

Building on Routinely Collected Health Data for Precision Population Care in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

The growing burden of multimorbidity among individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) presents a critical challenge for health systems, as it signals the need to shift from single-disease-focused care to integrated multimorbidity-focused care. Recent Canadian population-based research has demonstrated that multimorbidity in IBD follows distinct patterns and that these patterns can be leveraged using machine learning (ML) to predict premature mortality. This column draws on two recent studies evaluating populations with IBD - one identifying multimorbidity clustering among individuals wi

Population-Based and Routinely Collected Health Data Studies of Immunobullous Diseases: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Validated case definitions are essential for reliable epidemiological research using routinely collected health data. The extent to which population-based studies on autoimmune blistering diseases (AIBDs) use validated case definitions is uncertain, and variability in definitions may limit the generalizability of findings. OBJECTIVE: To describe definitions of AIBDs used in population-based epidemiologic studies and whether these definitions have been validated. METHODS: MEDLINE and Embase were searched for epidemiologic studies on pemphigoid, pemphigus and their variants, dermat

Tracking tuberculosis control using detailed population health and satellite luminosity data: findings from Kazakhstan.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan, like many other formerly socialist countries, experienced a surge in tuberculosis (TB). Despite the successful efforts of Kazakhstan's Ministry of Health in reducing TB related mortality, analysis of TB risk factors in Kazakhstan remains incomplete. This study takes advantage of detailed district-level population health data, and links TB to the presence of man-made environmental damage from the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site and the desiccation of the Aral Sea. Using both propensity score matching and regression models, along with censu…

Antimicrobial resistance recommendations via electronic health records with graph representation and patient population modeling.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which refers to the ability of pathogenic bacteria to withstand the effects of antibiotics, is a critical global health issue. Traditional methods for identifying AMRs in clinical settings rely on in-lab testing, which hampers timely medical decision-making. Moreover, there is a notable delay in updating empirical treatment guidelines in response to the rapid evolution of pathogens. Recent advances in AMR research have illuminated the potential of machine learning-based patient information analysis using electronic health records (EHRs). METHODS: Ag

The infodemic-pandemic nexus: Cross-national analysis of online misinformation's impact on population health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been parallelled by an "infodemic" - a surge in both accurate and misleading information circulating online. This study examines whether engagement with digital mis- and disinformation contributes to cross-national variation in population health outcomes. Drawing on data from 31 countries over a three-year period, we integrate indicators of online misinformation exposure and COVID-19 case rates, controlling for vaccination uptake, civil protests against public health measures and policy stringency. Using a mixed-effects regression framework that accounts for smoothed …

Population-scale gene-based analysis of whole-genome sequencing provides insights into metabolic health.

In addition to its coverage of the noncoding genome, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) may better capture the coding genome than exome sequencing. Here we sought to exploit this and identify new rare, protein-coding variants associated with metabolic health in WGS data (n = 708,956) from the UK Biobank and All of Us studies. Identified genes highlight new biological mechanisms, including protein-truncating variants (PTVs) in the DNA double-strand break repair gene RIF1 that have a substantial effect on body mass index (2.66 kg m-2, s.e. 0.43, P = 3.7 × 10-10). UBR3 is an intriguing example where P
