Population-based cancer registration in Indonesia.

Cancer is a major public health problem in Indonesia, becoming the 7th largest cause of death based on a national survey in 2007, accounting for 5.7 of all mortality. A cancer registry was started in 1970, but it was partial and was stopped mainly because no government body was responsible. Realizing the above situation, the Indonesian government established the Sub Directorate of Cancer Control within the Ministry of Health, with responsibility for developing a national cancer control program, including a cancer registry. A sustainable cancer registry was then started in 2007 within Jakarta P

Dog population management for the control of human echinococcosis.

Cystic and alveolar hydatid disease of humans caused by infection with Echinococcus granulosus or Echinococcus multilocularis are significant zoonoses in developing countries. For human infections, the main definitive host is the dog, and reduction in the population of unwanted dogs, together with anthelmintic treatment of wanted dogs, are recommended control procedures for these zoonoses. Both owned and unowned dogs have been shown to be a major source of Echinococcus spp. infection in developing countries. Unowned dogs are the most challenging category in dog population management for the co

Issues of prematurity and HIV infection.

Prematurity and HIV present a complex challenge, with biologic underpinnings that are often confounded by a myriad of other factors that coexist in this high-risk population. Furthermore, many of the current management options designed to reduce mother-to-infant transmission, including antiretroviral therapy and cesarean birth, may each have an independent effect on prematurity. These issues notwithstanding, knowledge gained from randomized controlled trials and epidemiologic studies has made a significant impact on the approach to this challenging public health problem worldwide. Mental Health of the Roma Population in Spain: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: The Roma population in Spain faces multiple known risk factors and shows indicators of a worse mental health status than the general population. A few studies consider them a vulnerable population and found higher rates of mental health issues. This review aims to analyze the mental health status of the Roma population in Spain through existing literature. As a secondary objective, we have considered studying the degree of development of this research field in the Spanish context. DESIGN: Due to the lack of clarity about the availability and quality of the existing information, a

Disaster Planning for Homeless Populations: Analysis and Recommendations for Communities.

Homelessness is a growing problem, with perhaps greater than a 150 million homeless people globally. The global community has prioritized the problem, as eradicating homelessness is one of the United Nation's sustainability goals of 2030. Homelessness is a variable entity with individual, population, cultural, and regional characteristics complicating emergency preparedness. Overall, there are many factors that make homeless individuals and populations more vulnerable to disasters. These include, but are not limited to: shelter concerns, transportation, acute and chronic financial and material

Evaluation and Management of the Child With Acute Decompensated Heart Failure: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association.

Nationally, there has been a rise in the number of children and adolescents with congenital and acquired heart disease presenting with acute decompensated heart failure. Compared with adults, these children have increased morbidity and mortality and use significantly more health care resources once admitted. Currently, there is little guidance on how to assess, manage, and create successful discharge plans for children presenting with acute decompensated heart failure. Given that this population represents an intersection among emergency medicine, cardiology, surgery, critical care, and psycho

Reducing my risk of intrusion: an intention of old homebound women who live alone.

BACKGROUND: In assessing home safety for older persons, nurses have checked home security or assessed fear of crime but neglected to explore intentions to reduce the risk of intrusion. OBJECTIVES: To describe the intentions of old homebound women relative to reducing the risk of intrusion. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological method was used. The 40 participants (aged 85-98 years, M = 89.6) met criteria for age, living alone, and homebound status. Over 18 months, a series of tape-recorded interviews was completed, focusing on perceptions about changes in feeling safe at home and precautio

Health literacy strengths and challenges of people in New South Wales prisons: a cross-sectional survey using the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ).

BACKGROUND: Health literacy is an important factor for enabling people to manage their health and live long fulfilling lives. People in prison are frequently from marginalised communities, often out of reach of conventional community based health organisations, and have poorer health outcomes. It is essential to understanding the health literacy profiles of people in prison, and its contribution to the well-established health inequities and outcomes of this population. This study aimed to use a multi-dimensional health literacy measurement tool to describe the strengths and challenges of adult

A pilot, randomized, feasibility study to improve health self-management behaviors in older adults with multiple chronic conditions and functional limitations: Protocol for the Behavioral Activation and Occupational Therapy Trial (BA+OT).

BACKGROUND: Approximately 45% of older adults in the U.S. have 2 or more chronic health conditions (e.g., arthritis, hypertension, diabetes) in addition to functional limitations that prevent performance of health self-management activities. Self-management continues to be the gold standard for managing MCC, but functional limitations create difficulty with these activities (e.g., physical activity, symptom monitoring). Restricted self-management accelerates the downward spiral of disability and accumulating chronic conditions which, in turn, increases rates of institutionalization and death b

Celiac Disease and Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction: What School Nurses Need to Know.

Abdominal pain and discomfort are common reasons students visit the school health office. Abdominal pain, in children, may be related to gastrointestinal conditions such as celiac disease (CD) or disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs). Both CD and DGBIs, formerly known as functional abdominal pain disorders, are both prevalent in the pediatric population. Manifestations, presentation, and management of these disorders overlap and will be reviewed in this article. Due to their chronic nature, school nurses should be aware of both the management and complications associated with CD and DGBIs

Evaluation of training in guideline-oriented biopsychosocial management of low back pain in occupational health services: Protocol of a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: To prevent low back pain (LBP) from developing into a prolonged disabling condition, clinical guidelines advocate early stage assessment, risk-screening, and tailored interventions. Occupational health services recommend guideline-oriented biopsychosocial screening and individualized assessment and management. However, it is not known whether training a limited number of health care professionals improves the management process. The primary objective of this study is to investigate whether training in the biopsychosocial practice model is effective in reducing disability. Furthermo

Continuous Glucose Monitoring: An Opportunity for Population-Based Diabetes Management.

The increasing prevalence of prediabetes and diabetes in the United States poses a serious threat to the health of the population. Closely associated with obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease, a diagnosis of diabetes or prediabetes carries with it life-altering demands. Critically important among these is the requirement for frequent glucose level checks-typically performed with blood obtained from a fingerstick. Innovative real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) technology makes it possible for patients and their clinicians to receive continuous glucose leve

A Review of Hidradenitis Suppurativa in Special Populations: Considerations in Children, Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women, and the Elderly.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin condition that significantly impacts patients' quality of life. HS is often challenging to treat. In this review, we discuss the unique characteristics of HS in four special populations: children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and breastfeeding mothers. In children, diagnosis may be delayed due to atypical and early HS disease presentations. HS management plans must take into consideration the lack of rigorous efficacy and safety data of HS treatments in this population. However, it is important to weigh the risk of treatments against the ri

Since its outbreak, in December, 2019, in the Chinese city of Wuhan, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has evolved into an ongoing global pandemic. Due to the novel antigenic properties of this virus, the world population could not develop immunity effectively and this led to the subsequent spread of COVID-19. This caused an unprecedented emergency situation with significant negative effects on health and well-being both on an individual and societal level. Apart from health, economic and social consequences, the impact
