Stuttering is a vocal phenomenon, which manifests itself as disturbances in speech fluency. While stuttering is most commonly treated with speech therapy and psychotherapy, a number of antipsychotic agents have been investigated as possible treatments. We present the case of a 37-year-old man who developed a post-concussive syndrome with psychosis and associated stuttering after his second exposure to a blast from an improvised explosive device (IED). After treatment with olanzapine, both his psychosis and his stuttering showed significant improvement. We also discuss stuttering and review pre

BACKGROUND: Experts recommend administering a traumatic brain injury (TBI) symptom checklist as part of routine evaluation for TBI with Glasgow Coma Scale score 13-15 ("mild" TBI [mTBI]) in adult emergency departments (EDs). However, such assessment is not routine, partly due to limited guidance on interpreting symptom scores.
OBJECTIVES: Assess the utility of Rivermead Post Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) scores, assessed in-hospital within 24 h of injury (day 1), in discriminating individuals with, vs. without, persistent TBI-related symptoms (persistent post-concussive symptoms [PP

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the gold standard treatment for insomnia, but there is limited evidence on the treatment effect of CBT-I in individuals after a concussion. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment effect of CBT-I on sleep outcomes and postconcussion symptoms.
SETTING: This study was conducted at an academic institution. The CBT-I sessions were conducted using a teleconferencing system (Zoom).
PARTICIPANTS: Participants were eligible to participate if they were at least 4 weeks post- concussion, aged 18 to 64 years

Dual-task (DT) has been shown to detect post-concussion deficits even after traditional measures returned to normal. However, previous studies were conducted in laboratory settings that were not feasible in the clinical setting. Prospective Cohort Study. Two groups (concussion and control groups) completed two testing sessions. The concussion group was tested at 7-10 days post-concussion (subacute) and after Return-to-Play (RTP). The control group was tested with similar time windows. Participants completed 2 single task (ST): Expanded Timed Get Up and Go (ETGUG) as a physical task and Auditor

Rehabilitation for individuals after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or concussion requires emphasis on both cognitive and physical rest, with a gradual return to activity including sports. As the client becomes more active, the rehabilitation professional should pay close attention to symptoms associated with mTBI, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and difficulty concentrating. The systematic approach to return to play provided by the Berlin Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport can apply to adults with mTBI. This protocol calls for gradually increasing the intensity of physical ac

Assessment of cognition is an important part of concussion management. The common paradigm of baseline and postinjury evaluations is recommended but due to the often lacking baseline data, reliable normative values are needed. The Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT®) battery is a widely used method of cognitive assessment offering several language options. There are few comparative studies between language groups on this test battery. ImPACT was administered at baseline to 184 Finnish male Professional Ice Hockey league players. The performance of the Finnish sa

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cognitive deficits are among the most commonly reported post-concussive symptoms, yet the underlying microstructural injury is poorly understood. Our aim was to discover white matter injury underlying reaction time in mild traumatic brain injury DTI by applying transport-based morphometry.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we performed DTI on 64 postconcussive patients (10-28 years of age; 69% male, 31% female) between January 2006 and March 2013. We measured the reaction time percentile by using Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test

Post-traumatic migraine (PTM) (i.e., headache, nausea, light and/or noise sensitivity) is an emerging risk factor for prolonged recovery following concussion. Concussions and migraine share similar pathophysiology characterized by specific ionic imbalances in the brain. Given these similarities, patients with PTM following concussion may exhibit distinct electrophysiological patterns, although researchers have yet to examine the electrophysiological brain activation in patients with PTM following concussion. A novel approach that may help differentiate brain activation in patients with and wit

This study longitudinally examined age differences across multiple outcome domains in individuals diagnosed with acute mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). A sample of 447 adults meeting VA/DoD criteria for mTBI was dichotomized by age into older (≥65 years; n = 88) and younger (<65 years; n = 359) sub-groups. All participants presented to the emergency department within 24 hours of sustaining a head injury, and outcomes were assessed at 1-, 3-, and 6-month intervals. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), post-concussive symptoms (PCS) were ascertai

Traumatic brain injuries are common among refugees and asylum-seekers and can result from a range of etiologies, including intimate partner violence, gang violence, war-related trauma, and torture. Regardless of the cause, these injuries often result in a host of neuropsychiatric and other symptoms that may complicate individuals' subsequent health outcomes. For asylum-seekers, documenting prior head trauma is essential to the legal process, since traumatic brain injuries and their subsequent effects on memory and cognition may affect the ability to provide thorough testimony.
