Diagnosis of depression in children and adolescents. Clinical pointers to a difficult diagnosis.

It is now accepted that depression can also affect children and adolescents, but its diagnosis is not straightforward. We examined review articles published on this subject over the last 15 years by large specialist groups and multidisciplinary teams. Most studies of symptoms of psychological distress and depression in children are mainly based on clinical experience of specialists and therefore provide only modest evidence. Isolated, transient unhappiness is not in itself a symptom of depression, but recurrent and persistent mood disorders constitute important warning signs. A French consensu

Psychotherapy research is needed to improve clinical practice for clients with HIV.

This introductory article to the special issue on psychotherapy and HIV provides an overview of the state of HIV intervention research, recommendations for future psychotherapy practice, and an emphasis on how psychotherapy researchers focusing on HIV should move away from the typical public health model. We provide information about how historical bias impacts HIV clinical decision-making now. In addition, we include an analysis of how public health definitions of intervention research have limited psychotherapy research-specifically the importance of common factors and process-oriented compo

Student Practice Opportunities in Core Mathematics Instruction: Exploring for a Goldilocks Effect for Kindergartners With Mathematics Difficulties.

Opportunities for practice play a critical role in learning complex behaviors. In the context of explicit mathematics instruction, practice facilitates systematic opportunities for students with mathematics difficulties (MD) to learn new mathematics content and apply such knowledge and skills to novel mathematics problems. This study explored whether there is an optimal amount of student practice that teachers should provide in core mathematics instruction to maximize the mathematics achievement of kindergarten students with MD, a so called "Goldilocks effect," as opposed to simply "more is be

Wearable real-time and adaptive feedback device to face the stuttering: a knowledge-based telehealthcare proposal.

Despite first written references to permanent developmental stuttering occurred more than 2500 years ago, the mechanisms underlying this disorder are still unknown. This paper briefly reviews stuttering causal hypothesis and treatments, and presents the requirements that a new stuttering therapeutic device should verify. As a result of the analysis, an adaptive altered auditory feedback device based on a multimodal intelligent monitor, within the framework of a knowledge-based telehealthcare system, is presented. The subsequent discussion, based partly on the successful outcomes of a similar i

Predictive Roles of Fear of Missing Out and Rumination in Depression Among ICU Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Nurses working in intensive care units (ICUs) experience occupational stress, which increases their vulnerability to psychological disorders such as depression. Depression among ICU nurses not only affects their mental well-being but may also impair the quality of patient care. Two psychological factors, fear of missing out (FoMO) and rumination, have been proposed as psychological contributors to depression. However, their predictive roles among ICU nurses remain insufficiently explored. AIM: To evaluate the predictive roles of FoMO and rumination in depression among ICU nurses.

Harmful sexual behaviours against siblings in New Zealand: could assessment of the family environment guide therapeutic intervention?

The current study reports the findings of a pilot study on a community-based sample of adolescent males with harmful sexual behaviours (AHSBs) with sibling or non-sibling sexual offending. Specifically, the study aimed to determine whether using the Family Environment Scale (FES) could differentiate between individual, familial and offence characteristics of those who had sibling victims and those with non-sibling victims, and whether using this tool might aid clinical practice. Results indicated that sibling offending AHSBs experienced significantly greater current familial conflict than non-

METHOD: We present a case of a 34-year-old woman with an 18-month history of vomiting with the initial diagnosis of bulimia nervosa (BN). However, the patient showed an unusual vomiting behavior. Therefore, further somatic diagnostic procedures were carried out leading to the additional diagnosis of achalasia. After successful interventional and surgical treatment for achalasia, further psychotherapeutic interventions were necessary because of worsening of the BN symptoms. A certai

Top Ten Tips Palliative Care Clinicians Should Know About Collaborating with Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.

Palliative care (PC) and consultation-liaison (CL) psychiatry are complementary clinical disciplines that frequently care for the same patients facing serious illness complicated by psychiatric symptoms, psychological distress, neuropsychiatric syndromes, and high-stakes medical decisions. Yet structured collaboration between the two fields remains variable, and PC clinicians may be uncertain when and how to engage CL psychiatry colleagues. In this article, an interdisciplinary group of PC and CL psychiatry clinicians offers 10 practical tips to strengthen collaboration across inpatient and ou

Psychosocial Treatment of an Adolescent in a Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program.

Interpersonal violence is the leading cause of death in adolescents. Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) address the emotional and behavioral sequelae of assault and homicide. Few studies have been published on pediatric HVIPs, and no study offers a conceptualization model for treatment approaches. This paper demonstrates the use of empirically supported practices by outlining the services provided and subsequent treatment trajectory of an adolescent receiving care from an HVIP at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. This case study follows the Case Study Report (CARE) guidelin

Cognitive profile analysis in school psychology: History, issues, and continued concerns.

Intelligence testing remains a fixture in school psychology training and practice. Despite their popularity, the use of IQ tests is not without controversy and researchers have long debated how these measures should be interpreted with children and adolescents. A controversial aspect of this debate relates to the utility of cognitive profile analysis, a class of interpretive methods that encourage practitioners to make diagnostic decisions and/or treatment recommendations based on the strengths and weaknesses observed in ability score profiles. Whereas numerous empirical studies and reviews ha

A study of expressed emotion in the parental primary carers of adolescents with intellectual impairment.

Expressed emotion (EE) was measured in the parental primary carer (carer) of 92 adolescents with intellectual impairment to examine its associated characteristics. High EE was mainly a result of high levels of emotional overinvolvement. High EE was associated with psychological illhealth, poor-quality marriage and poor practical social support of the carer, and psychiatric disorder in the adolescent with intellectual impairment. This suggests that EE may be a useful indicator of coping difficulties in these families. The subgroup of high EE emotional overinvolvement was associated with a carer

Introducing ACT Into the Field of Voice Therapy.

Voice disorders are multidimensional phenomena involving anatomical and physiological features alongside emotional, behavioral, and psychological aspects. Although the literature acknowledges the relevance of psychological factors in voice disorders, the structured incorporation of psychological approaches into voice therapy remains limited. This article addresses that gap by presenting a preliminary framework for integrating acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) principles into voice therapy. ACT is a well-established psychological approach with demonstrated adaptability across various prof
