Coagulation studies after transfusion of hydroxyethyl starch protected frozen blood in primates.

This-study evaluates the effects of the transfusion of frozen-thawed blood protected by hydroxyethyl starch (HES) on shocked monkeys. Particular attention is directed toward the study of coagulation in view of previous reports of coagulopathies caused by hydroxyethyl starch. In vivo studies were done in 13 shocked monkeys that received either homologous or autologous blood which had been frozen and thawed with 14 per cent HES as the cryoprotective agent. Multiple coagulation studies were obtained on the monkeys, and histopathological evaluations were performed. There was no evidence of increas

CCNB1IP1 regulatory evolution underlies gradual increases in cortical size and folding in primates.

The gradual expansion and folding of the cortex are key factors in human cognitive evolution, yet their molecular underpinnings remain not well understood. Here we identify cyclin B1 interacting protein 1 (CCNB1IP1) gene as a key regulator of human brain evolution using tree shrew as an outgroup. In primates, CCNB1IP1 acquired brain expression and gradually increased its expression during evolution, mirroring the increase of cortical size and folding. Comparative analysis of cis-regulatory elements reveals evolutionary changes underlying the increase of CCNB1IP1 expression. Overexpression of C…

Transcriptomic analysis of gingival tissues in resolved experimental periodontal lesions of nonhuman primates.

BACKGROUND: This study used a preclinical model of experimental periodontitis in nonhuman primates to evaluate the biological features of resolved periodontal lesions. METHODS: Macaca mulatta (rhesus monkeys) were age-stratified into young [≤3 years (7-10-year-old humans)], adolescent/young adult [3-7 years (12-25-year-old)], adults [12-15 years (40-50-year-old)], and aged [17-23 years (60-80-year-old)]. The samples were also analyzed based on sex or matrilineal derivation. The gingival transcriptome was evaluated using microarray analyses on tissue biopsies from healthy tissues and at resolu…

A prefrontal cortex-hypothalamus circuit for heart rate control in non-human primates.

Humans exhibit changes in heart rate during cognitive and emotional events, and dysregulation of this brain-heart coupling is a hallmark of many psychiatric disorders. Yet, how circuits that regulate cognition exert direct control over heart physiology remains poorly understood, particularly in primates. Here, we identify a prefrontal-hypothalamic circuit that exerts powerful, bidirectional control over heart rate in monkeys. We show that electrical stimulation of a small ventral subregion within the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (area 47/12; a12) evokes rapid and robust decreases in heart r…

Retrotransposition Events Shape the Evolution of the Ataxin-3 Gene Family in Primates.

Evolutionary studies of disease-associated genes provide crucial insights into pathological mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets. Po … or the disease. The comparison of (CAG)n interruption patterns of the different paralogs in several primates elucidates the process leading to the currently observed pure long tracts in human ATXN3, responsible for disease when expanded. This study intends to pioneer the identification of new paralogs of SCA-associated genes and the use of phylogenetic ana …

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 in Trigeminal Ganglia of Trafficked Neotropical Primates, Peru, 2024.

We detected herpes simplex virus 1 in the trigeminal ganglia of trafficked Neotropical primates (1 Aotus azarai; 3 Sapajus macrocephalus) in Peru. Tests also revealed Saimiriine alphaherpesvirus 1 in the trigeminal ganglia of 2 Saimiri sp. monkeys. Our findings suggest latency and raise concerns about diagnostic standards, viral reactivation, and spillover risks.

A fossil galagid (Primates: Galagidae) from the Pliocene site of Woranso-Mille, Ethiopia.

Two new fossil galagid specimens from the Pliocene sediments of Woranso-Mille in Ethiopia provide important evidence for documenting the taxonomic diversity and evolutionary history of Galagidae. The partial cranium (MKM-VP-1/140) and mandibular fragment (MKM-VP-1/414) from the Makah Mera (MKM) collecting locality are the first fossil galagids described from the Afar region of Ethiopia. Importantly, MKM-VP-1/140 represents the most complete galagid specimen known from the Plio-Pleistocene of Africa. Based on their dental morphology and overall size, the two specimens can be assigned to a singl

Functional Differences in Muscle Architecture Across the Pelvis and Hind Limb of Primates.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding the architectural diversity of primate musculature is essential for interpreting locomotor function and reconstruc … SCUSSION: These findings suggest that patterns of pelvic and hind limb muscle specialization across primates are driven primarily by ecological and locomotor function, rather than evolutionary relatedness. The dataset provides a detailed, anatomically grounded resource for future comparative and biomechanical studies of primate hind limb function.

Developmental insights and dental formula of the Coquerel's Sifaka Propithecus coquereli (Indriidae, primates).

The question of dental reduction in primates has been a longtime debate, especially in Indriidae, where the tooth type of the dental comb has been extensively investigated. While the presence of two incisors without the canine is largely accepted today, some questions remain concerning the homology of teeth preserved in the lower postincisor dentition. Although the presence of the dc1, dp2, and dp3 is clearly distinguishable during development, two teeth disappear at the adult stage. Consequently, some authors identify the remaining postincisor replacement tooth as a P3, while some studies ind…

Planum Temporale Asymmetries in Primates: A Comparative Study in Great Apes and Monkeys.

OBJECTIVES: Most human brains exhibit left hemisphere asymmetry for planum temporale (PT) surface area and gray matter volume, which is interpreted as cerebral lateralization for language. Once considered a uniquely human feature, PT asymmetries have now been documented in chimpanzees and olive baboons. The goal of the current study was to further investigate the evolution of PT asymmetries in nonhuman primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We measured PT surface area in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes, n = 90), bonobos (Pan paniscus, n = 21), gorillas (Gorilla gorilla, n = 34), orangutans (Pongo spp.…

Systemic and Local Lipids in Nonhuman Primates With Drusen and Age-Related Maculopathies.

PURPOSE: Lipids are a principal component of drusen and are involved in the pathobiology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Nonhuman primates (NHPs) develop macular drusen and may provide insight into circulating or local lipids in AMD. METHODS: We evaluated aged rhesus macaques by fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fundus autofluorescence, as well as measured fasting plasma glucose, total cholesterol, high- and low-density lipoproteins, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein (Apo) A1, B, CIII, and E. Retinal tissues were collected for electron microscopy and immun…

Optical coherence elastography detects increased corneal stiffness in nonhuman primates with experimental glaucoma.

SIGNIFICANCE: Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, characterized by progressive optic nerve damage. Early detection of glaucoma is key to effective intervention, but an incomplete clinical understanding of the development of glaucoma complicates the selection of diagnostic criteria. Prolonged ocular hypertension due to glaucoma can impact the biomechanical properties of ocular tissues, including the cornea. We examine whether experimental glaucoma causes changes in the biomechanical properties of the cornea. AIM: We determined the biomechanical properties of the cornea in a

Borreliosis and doxycycline treatment disrupt gut microbiota and immune responses in nonhuman primates.

Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) is the spirochete that causes Lyme disease (LD). Transmission to humans occurs via bites of infected Ixodes spp. ticks. Doxycycline is often used to treat LD patients, which is sometimes delayed due to current diagnostic challenges. Recently, several lines of evidence show dysbiosis of the gut microbiome in LD patients, which may be a host factor contributing to pathogenesis and symptomology but is still an understudied area in the field. To address this knowledge gap, we longitudinally compared the immune response and gut microbial composition of Japanese macaques af
