We performed complete ophthalmological examinations of 30 consecutive patients with Turner syndrome. Twenty-three had 45XO and 7 had 45XO/46XX karyotypes (mosaicism). Non-familial strabismus was the most prominent ocular abnormality and was present in 33% of the patients. Other eye findings included ptosis (16%), hypertelorism (10%), epicanthus (10%), and antimongoloid slants (10%). Red-green color deficiency was found in 10% of the patients. One patient had congenital periodic alternating nystagmus.

A longitudinal survey of adjustment to divorce in Cleveland, Ohio, suburbs was conducted with a matched sample of married persons in order to identify some of the common complaints, feelings, concerns, and health hazards among separated and divorced persons. The study findings show that substantial numbers of divorced and married people turn to their physicians for help with personal problems, suggesting that physicians need to be prepared to help them appropriately. Antenatal diagnosis and selective management of abruptio placentae were studied prospectively over a 17-month period. Diagnosis was confirmed by placental inspection in 59 (1.3%) of 4545 deliveries. Among the 50 patients admitted with a living fetus, the diagnosis was made antenatally in 31 (62%). Fifteen were delivered vaginally and 16 by cesarean section. A prospective study of 12 patients with the diagnosis of polymyositis or dermatomyosiois was initiated to determine the characteristics of the esophageal manometric patterns in this group. In this prospective study we evaluate the role of serum bile acids in the investigation and management of cholestasis of pregnancy in a detailed study of 18 patients. Bile acids were the most sensitive diagnostic test. This study analyzes the clinicopathologic findings in patients with ectopic pregnancy (EP), and deals with the differential diagnosis of the EP, intrauterine pregnancy (IUP), and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). We evaluated 346 patients with suspected EP. Among those, 119 patients had EP, 82 had IUP, and 55 had PID without pregnancy. The incidence of EP was 1/32.9 live births. Laboratory study fo 109 insulin-dependent diabetics younger than 17 yr of age and resident in greater Montreal at the time on onset of symptoms is reported. The cases were diagnosed during a 2-yr period (1976-1978). Sibling controls were obtained for 72 of the cases studied. In a prospective study of six years' experience with a haematemesis and melaena unit from 1972 to 1978, there were 98 admissions of patients with bleeding gastric ulcer. There were ten deaths, giving a mortality of 11%. Forty-one patients were treated by emergency surgery with seven deaths, an operative mortality of 17%. A test for assessing stenosis in the aortoiliac segment is described in which femoral pressure is measured directly by continuous monitoring and an intra-arterial injection of papaverine is used to augment blood flow. A one year prospective study of equestrian injuries was carried out in an area where horse riding is a popular pursuit. 115 persons suffered injury--eighty females and thirty-five males of whom sixty were under fifteen years of age. No fatalities were recorded and there were 0.2 injuries per 100 rides. Most injuries were minor and to the musculo-skeletal system. Visceral and cerebral injuries were not common but the former were life threatening in all cases. It is concluded that young riders should be supervised.

A prospective study was done of serum calcitonin (HCT) levels in 61 patients with bronchogenic cancer. Initially, 52% of patients had hypercalcitonemia. Hypercalcitonemia was not confined to patients with any particular histologic type. Seventy-eight percent of those with high calcitonin remained normocalcemic. Abruptio placentae caused 3.96 perinatal deaths per 1,000 births in a large prospective study. Intrapartum but not prepartum maternal hypertension was observed in the fatal cases. Results froma prospective study in Malmö performed in 1963-65 are used to discuss the possible role of hormonal drugs in human fetal maldevelopment. Appr. 2 per cent of all women had a child born were treated with gestagens during early pregnancy and slightly more had used Primodos as a pregnancy test. The incidence of bacterial infection associated with unexplained hyperbilirubinaemia was determined prospectively in 69 infants under 2 weeks of age. Blood and urine cultures were obtained from all patients, and 22 patients had their CSF cultured.
