We report on our series of 48 patients with uncemented hip prostheses, with an average follow-up of 3 years. The clinical results, according to the Merle d'Aubigné's classification, are comparable to those obtained with cemented prostheses except for transitory pain, very often localized to the lateral aspect of the thigh, which seems to be correlated with the bone adaptation to the implant. Radiological findings are valuable in the assessment of long-term results with uncemented prostheses. Despite the long-term success of press-fit condylar (PFC) knee prostheses, premature failures caused by aggressive rapid osteolysis have been reported. To investigate why patients experience such failures, we reviewed 48 retrieved implants and surrounding tissues together with demographic and radiographic data. Polyethylene degradation was determined from density profiles taken through the retrieved inserts. We compared the histology of tissues around PFC implants with that from around failed implants of similar designs from patients matched to length of implantation, body mass index, and age.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical, microbiologic, and radiologic status of soft and hard tissues surrounding zygomatic implants.
STUDY DESIGN: Patients who had at least two zygomatic implants were eligible for the study. Their soft tissues were analyzed, and microbial samples were collected. We present two cases of pregnant women associated with mechanical mitral valve prostheses dysfunction, treated between October 1998 and September 2000, in congestive heart failure, functional class III, without fetal distress. PURPOSE: The zygomatic implant is mainly indicated for the rehabilitation of extremely atrophied maxillae when bone augmentation should be avoided. One drawback of zygomatic implants, which typically pass through the sinus, is initial or late bone resorption around the implant neck, which can result in oroantral communications followed by possible infection of the sinus. To decrease the risk of sinus infection, a modified technique was developed to preserve the integrity of the sinus membrane and to regenerate bone around zygomatic implants using an extended sinus grafting approach.

Resorption of the alveolar ridges after tooth extraction can mandate site development (preparation) by augmentation, grafting, or both before implants can be placed. The fabrication of successful implant prostheses generally can be accomplished only if the artificial teeth are placed in the same position as was occupied by the natural teeth they are replacing.
