Association Between Problem Gambling and Functional Disability: A Nationally Representative Study Conducted in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVES: Problem gambling is associated with multiple detrimental health outcomes. However, to date, no study has investigated the association between problem gambling and functional disability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between problem gambling and functional disability in a UK nationally representative sample. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the 2007 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey were analyzed. Problem gambling was assessed using a questionnaire including 10 DSM-IV criteria, whereas functional disability referred to at least 1 difficulty

Classifying Conduct Disorder Using a Biopsychosocial Model and Machine Learning Method.

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) is a common syndrome with far-reaching effects. Risk factors for the development of CD span social, psychological, and biological domains. Researchers note that predictive models of CD are limited if the focus is on a single risk factor or even a single domain. Machine learning methods are optimized for the extraction of trends across multidomain data but have yet to be implemented in predicting the development of CD. METHODS: Social (e.g., family, income), psychological (e.g., psychiatric, neuropsychological), and biological (e.g., resting-state graph metric

Arterial spin labeling perfusion imaging in an infant with anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is an autoimmune encephalitis characterized by complex neuropsychiatric syndromes and the presence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) antibodies against NMDAR. The characteristics of anti-NMDAR encephalitis in children, particularly infants, are unclear due to difficulties in neurologic assessment such as psychiatric symptoms. Additionally, subtle or non-specific findings of conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) make early diagnosis even more difficult. Herein, we present the first case of infant anti-NMDAR encephalitis in w

Three Pediatric Siblings With CADASIL.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is a congenital small vessel disease of the brain due to NOTCH3 gene mutations. Although adult-onset CADASIL is well documented, more cases are being described within the pediatric population. We describe three siblings with NOTCH3 mutations with various symptomatic presentations of early-onset CADASIL and one sibling with concurrent moyamoya syndrome. METHODS: Review of electronic medical records of identified patients. RESULTS: A 19-year-old male who has experienced behavioral d

Assessment of the beliefs, needs, and expectations for genetic counseling of patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type (hEDS) is a heritable connective tissue disorder that currently does not have a known molecular etiology. Previous studies have explored the complex symptomology, clinical diagnosis, and psychological aspects of hEDS. Genetics providers currently aid in the diagnosis and management guidance of patients with hEDS, but there is limited data describing the needs and expectations of individuals with hEDS from a clinical genetics appointment. Our study sought to explore these items through the use of an online survey to assess participants' beliefs, needs

Early detection of eating disorders: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Early detection of eating disorders (EDs) could improve their prognosis, decrease morbidity and mortality, and prevent the risk of evolution towards a chronic form and somatic, psychiatric and psychosocial complications. The objective of this review was to examine the current scientific data concerning the early detection of EDs, which is one of the facets of secondary prevention. METHOD: A scoping literature review was carried out following the PRISMA-ScR criteria, including all articles on ED detection published up to 2021 on PUBMED and PSYCINFO. RESULTS: 43 articles were included

Development of Disordered Eating Behaviors and Comorbid Depressive Symptoms in Adolescence: Neural and Psychopathological Predictors.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are common in adolescence and are devastating and strongly comorbid with other psychiatric disorders. Yet little is known about their etiology, knowing which would aid in developing effective preventive measures. METHODS: Longitudinal assessments of disordered eating behaviors (DEBs)-binge-eating, purging, and dieting-and comorbid psychopathology were measured in 1386 adolescents from the IMAGEN study. Development of DEBs and associated mental health problems was investigated by comparing participants who reported symptoms at ages 16 or 19 years, but not at age 14

COVID-19 and French Medical Maritime Teleconsultation.

Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic has impacted both land and maritime health services. The purpose of this study is to describe the calls received by the Tele-Medical Assistance Service (TMAS) in relation to this epidemic. Methods: From March 1 to 30 April 30, 2020, all records coded by TMAS doctors as "influenza due to an unidentified virus" were extracted. The following data were collected: patients' age, gender, nationality, role on board, type of ship, area of navigation, reason for the teleconsultation, patient's symptoms, whether or not a COVID test had been

Separating the Signal from the Noise: How Psychiatric Diagnoses Can Help Discern Food Addiction from Dietary Restraint.

Converging evidence from both animal and human studies have implicated hedonic eating as a driver of both binge eating and obesity. The construct of food addiction has been used to capture pathological eating across clinical and non-clinical populations. There is an ongoing debate regarding the value of a food addiction "diagnosis" among those with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa binge/purge-type, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. Much of the food addiction research in eating disorder populations has failed to account for dietary restraint, which can increase addiction-like

Defining data-driven subgroups of obsessive-compulsive disorder with different treatment responses based on resting-state functional connectivity.

Characterization of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), like other psychiatric disorders, suffers from heterogeneities in its symptoms and therapeutic responses, and identification of more homogeneous subgroups may help to resolve the heterogeneity. We aimed to identify the OCD subgroups based on resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and to explore their differences in treatment responses via a multivariate approach. From the resting-state functional MRI data of 107 medication-free OCD patients and 110 healthy controls (HCs), we selected rsFC features, which discriminated OCD patients

Behaviour Change Strategies Endorsed by Gamblers Subtyped by Psychological Distress, Risky Alcohol Use, and Impulsivity.

Problem gambling is often accompanied by co-morbid psychiatric disorders and maladaptive personality traits. Subtyping gamblers based on these pervasive comorbidities has been attempted so as to aid understanding of the aetiology of problem gambling and inform treatment options. However, there has been less focus on subtyping gamblers with (past or current) or without a history of problem gambling, or on providing more specific treatment or self-help recommendations. The current study sought to subtype current-, past-, and non-problem gamblers using three common comorbidities; psychological di

Meta-analysis: Adulthood prevalence of Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is estimated to have a prevalence of 0.30-0.77% in school aged children. Longitudinal studies suggest that roughly half-to-two-thirds of children with TS experience a substantial improvement in tic symptoms during adolescence. By contrast, few studies have examined adulthood prevalence of TS. Accurate prevalence estimates across the lifespan are needed to support regulatory and public health decisions. METHODS: We searched PubMED and EMBASE for studies that examined the prevalence of TS in adults. We conducted a random-effects meta-analysis of logit event ra

Penile implants and other high risk practices in French Guiana's correctional facility: A cause for concern.

BACKGROUND: Prisoners in French Guiana, a French territory located in South America, have a HIV and hepatitis B prevalence of 4%. Body modifications such as penile implants, tattoos, and body piercings are common among detainees, increasing the risk of blood-borne virus transmission. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional randomised survey in which the primary objective was to estimate the prevalence of high risk 'bloody practices' (penile implants, tattoos, body piercings) in French Guiana's only correctional facility. The secondary objective was to describe the risk factors for penile impl

Outcomes of Diagnostic Exome Sequencing in Patients With Diagnosed or Suspected Autism Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Exome sequencing has recently been proved to be a successful diagnostic method for complex neurodevelopmental disorders. However, the diagnostic yield of exome sequencing for autism spectrum disorders has not been extensively evaluated in large cohorts to date. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed diagnostic exome sequencing in a cohort of 163 individuals with autism spectrum disorder (66.3%) or autistic features (33.7%). RESULTS: The diagnostic yield observed in patients in our cohort was 25.8% (42 of 163) for positive or likely positive findings in characterized disease genes, w

Social disinhibition is a heritable subphenotype of tics in Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To identify heritable symptom-based subtypes of Tourette syndrome (TS). METHODS: Forty-nine motor and phonic tics were examined in 3,494 individuals (1,191 TS probands and 2,303 first-degree relatives). Item-level exploratory factor and latent class analyses (LCA) were used to identify tic-based subtypes. Heritabilities of the subtypes were estimated, and associations with clinical characteristics were examined. RESULTS: A 6-factor exploratory factor analysis model provided the best fit, which paralleled the somatotopic representation of the basal ganglia, distinguished simple fro

Is developmental timing of trauma exposure associated with depressive and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms in adulthood?

BACKGROUND: Trauma exposure is a known risk factor for psychopathology. However, the impact of the developmental timing of exposure remains unclear. This study examined the effect of age at first trauma exposure on levels of adult depressive and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. METHODS: Lifetime trauma exposure (including age at first exposure and frequency), current psychiatric symptoms, and sociodemographic information were collected during interviews with adults participating in a study at a public urban hospital in Atlanta, GA. Multiple linear regression models assessed the

A comparison of clinical characteristics between adolescent males and females with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (ED) are serious disorders that have a negative impact on both the psychological and the physiological well-being of the afflicted. Despite the fact that ED affect both genders, males are often underrepresented in research and when included the sample sizes are often too small for separate analyses. Consequently we have an unclear and sometimes contradictory picture of the clinical characteristics of males with ED. The aim of the present study was to improve our understanding of the clinical features of adolescent males with eating disorders. METHODS: We compared

Association of eating disorder symptoms with internalizing and externalizing dimensions of psychopathology among men and women.

OBJECTIVE: A large body of factor analytic research supports the idea that common mental disorders are organized along correlated latent dimensions termed internalizing and externalizing. Eating disorders (EDs) have been associated with both internalizing (mood and anxiety disorders) and externalizing (substance use, antisocial personality disorder) forms of psychopathology. Previous studies found that EDs are most strongly related to internalizing disorders. However, no previous factor analytic studies of EDs and the internalizing/externalizing dimensions have evaluated if EDs align with thes

Estimated verbal IQ and the odds of problem gambling: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The neurocognitive deficits and other correlates of problem gambling are also observable in individuals with lower cognitive abilities, suggesting that a low IQ may be a determinant of problem gambling. There has been very little research into this possibility. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics associated with problem gambling in a large population-based study in England, with a particular focus on IQ. METHOD: The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS) 2007 comprised detailed interviews with 7403 individuals living in private households in England. Problem gam
