Mechanisms of dyspnea.

An unpleasant sensation of difficulty in breathing is a common complaint in a variety of disease states. The psychophysical approach to the study of respiratory sensations has contributed greatly to the understanding of the mechanisms of dyspnea. Although dyspnea, in large part, is an expression of the sense of the effort of breathing, the intensity and quality of the subjective experiences during breathing are also dependent on afferent feedback primarily from receptors in the respiratory muscles. These inputs may act either by changing the level and pattern of respiratory motor activity or b

[Evaluation of human strain during interrupted exposure to vibration (author's transl)].

The psychophysical reactions to stochastic vibrations transmitted in vertical direction to sitting man are investigated in simulated experiments under laboratory conditions. In the framework of an appropriate concept of assessment, indicators related to bottleneck situations in functional systems of the organism for activity and strain measurements allow the evaluation of the recreation efficiency of interruptions in exposure time. The special meaning of the distribution and thus the frequency rate of the interruptions can be illustrated particularly by the variance in time of the strain proce

Effects of functional endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory and trigeminal function in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) with and without nasal polyps has a prevalence of around 10%, being one of the most common chronic diseases in Europe. It is characterized by a wide range of symptoms leading to a high individual, clinical and socioeconomic burden due to loss of productivity of individual patients and challenging therapeutic processes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) on olfactory function and associated quality of life of CRS patients, particularly regarding postoperative differences in neuronal processes. Using psychophysic

Intuitive omnidirectional vibrotactile feedback from a sensorized insole for lower-limb prostheses users: a preliminary assessment.

Objective.Non-invasive solutions for providing artificial sensory feedback to lower-limb prosthesis users are compact and convenient for clinical translation because they do not require additional surgery. However, they are mostly simpler feedback schemes characterized by limited information bandwidth and low spatial resolution. Additionally, feedback is often assessed using specialized tasks and conditions, which sometimes promote the use of feedback, limiting comprehensive psychophysical and ecological insights.Approach.This study introduces OmniFeel, a novel feedback system composed of eigh

Medial Prefrontal High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation to Improve Pain Modulation in Chronic Low Back Pain: A Pilot Randomized Double-blinded Placebo-Controlled Crossover Trial.

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is highly disabling, but often without identifiable source. Focus has been on impaired anti-nociceptive mechanisms contributing to pain maintenance, though methods of targeting this impairment remain limited. This randomised-controlled cross-over pilot trial used active versus sham medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) for 3-consecutive days to improve descending pain inhibitory function. Twelve CLBP patients were included with an average visual analogue scale (VAS) pain intensity of 3.0 ± 1.5 and pain dur

More GP contacts and poorer health of informal caregivers with low socioeconomic status in Germany: results from the population-based DEGS1 and the cross-sectional GPCare-1 study.

OBJECTIVES: Informal caregivers are known to have poorer mental health. Risk factors for caregiver burden include low education, female gender, cohabitation with the care recipient and lack of resources. General practitioners (GPs) have an important role in supporting caregivers. Drawing on data from two surveys, associations between caregivers' socioeconomic status (SES), psychophysical health and GP contacts are analysed. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. The study draws on data from two surveys (German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Adults, DEGS1 and General Practice Care-1, GPCa

Altered Brainstem Pain Modulating Circuitry Functional Connectivity in Chronic Painful Temporomandibular Disorder.

There is evidence from preclinical models of chronic pain and human psychophysical investigations to suggest that alterations in endogenous brainstem pain-modulation circuit functioning are critical for the initiation and/or maintenance of pain. Whilst preclinical models have begun to explore the functioning of this circuitry in chronic pain, little is known about such functioning in humans with chronic pain. The aim of this investigation was to determine whether individuals with chronic non-neuropathic pain, painful temporomandibular disorders (TMD), display alterations in brainstem pain-modu

Effect of Stimulus Orientation on Visual Function in Children with Refractive Amblyopia.

PURPOSE: We investigated and characterized the patterns of meridional anisotropies in newly diagnosed refractive amblyopes using pattern onset-offset visual evoked potentials (POVEPs) and psychophysical grating acuity (GA). METHODS: Twenty-five refractive amblyopes were recruited and compared with non-amblyopic controls from our previous study. Monocular POVEPs were recorded in response to sinewave 4 cycles per degree (cpd) grating stimuli oriented along each individual participants' principal astigmatic meridians, which were approximately horizontal (meridian 1) and vertical (meridian 2). The role of conceptual knowledge in understanding synaesthesia: Evaluating contemporary findings from a "hub-and-spokes" perspective.

Synesthesia is a phenomenon in which stimulation in one sensory modality triggers involuntary experiences typically not associated with that stimulation. Inducing stimuli (inducers) and synesthetic experiences (concurrents) may occur within the same modality (e.g., seeing colors while reading achromatic text) or span across different modalities (e.g., tasting flavors while listening to music). Although there has been considerable progress over the last decade in understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms of synesthesia, the focus of current neurocognitive models of synesthesia does not

Auditory and cognitive factors underlying individual differences in aided speech-understanding among older adults.

This study was designed to address individual differences in aided speech understanding among a relatively large group of older adults. The group of older adults consisted of 98 adults (50 female and 48 male) ranging in age from 60 to 86 (mean = 69.2). Hearing loss was typical for this age group and about 90% had not worn hearing aids. All subjects completed a battery of tests, including cognitive (6 measures), psychophysical (17 measures), and speech-understanding (9 measures), as well as the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing (SSQ) self-report scale. Most of the speech-understanding m

A very large Brazilian pedigree with 11778 Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy.

PURPOSE: We conducted extensive epidemiological, neuro-ophthalmological, psychophysical, and blood examinations on a newly discovered, very large pedigree with molecular analysis showing mtDNA mutation for Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON). METHODS: Four patients representing four index cases from a remote area of Brazil were sent to Sao Paulo, where complete ophthalmological examinations strongly suggested LHON. Molecular analysis of their blood demonstrated that they were LHON, homoplasmic 11778, J-haplogroup. They had an extensive family that all lived in one rural area in Brazil.

Cytological changes and conjunctival hyperemia in relation to sensory eye irritation.

In general, irritation is a physiological response to a chemical or physical stimulus involving objective changes (e.g., local redness and edema) and subjective sensations (e.g., pruritus and pain). The perception of an irritating stimulus in the eyes and the upper airways is called sensory irritation. Sensory irritation is a prevalent symptom in relation to complaints about indoor air quality. The intensity of perceived sensory irritation in humans has mainly been evaluated using psychophysical methods. However, perceived sensory irritation is dependent on the subject expressing the symptoms;

A modality-specific dysfunction of pain processing in schizophrenia.

Clinical observations showed that schizophrenia (SCZ) patients reported little or no pain under various conditions that are commonly associated with intense painful sensations, leading to a higher risk of morbidity and mortality. However, this phenomenon has received little attention and its underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we conducted two experiments combining psychophysics, electroencephalography (EEG), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques to investigate neural mechanisms of pain insensitivity in SCZ patients. Specifically, we adopted a stimulus-resp…
