Channelized Hotelling model observer (CHO) methods were developed to assess performance of an x-ray angiography system. The analytical methods included correction for known bias error due to finite sampling. Detectability indices ([Formula: see text]) corresponding to disk-shaped objects with diameters in the range 0.5-4 mm were calculated. Application of the CHO for variable detector target dose (DTD) in the range 6-240 nGy frame(-1) resulted in [Formula: see text] estimates which were as much as 2.9× greater than expected of a quantum limited system. Over-estimation of [Formula: see text] w

The unification of quantum mechanics and general relativity remains elusive due to the lack of experimental signatures. To explore the parameter regimes where both theories are relevant, growing attention is being paid to investigating the general relativistic effects on low-energy quantum systems. Such research offers valuable insights into the connection between the two pillars of modern physics. Entanglement and gravitational time dilation capture key aspects of quantum mechanics and general relativity, respectively. Thus, the dynamical evolution of entangled systems in curved space unambig

Rare-earth materials drive technological innovations from clean energy to quantum devices, yet their two-dimensional (2D) derivatives remain largely unexplored. Here, we decode the thermal and electronic transport mechanisms in 2D rare-earth dichalcogenides CeX2 (X = O, S, Se, Te) through first-principles calculations, temperature-dependent effective potentials theory, anharmonic lattice dynamics, and Boltzmann transport theory. Both ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and finite-temperature phonon spectra demonstrate that CeX2 compounds are structurally stable. In this class of materials

This work reports a hybridized local and charge-transfer (HLCT) emitter (EHBIPOAz) containing a rigid 11,13-dihydro-12H-dibenzo[a,c]imidazo[4,5-i]phenazin-12-one acceptor fragment orthogonally fused with 5H-dibenzo[b,f]azepine donor moieties. Designing EHBIPOAz, we aimed to suppress vibrational reorganization while enabling ultrafast activationless hot-exciton mediated reverse intersystem crossing (hRISC). This rigid structure minimises the reorganization energy to 0.08-0.09 eV, thereby preserving a locally excited-dominated emission with a narrow bandwidth. The molecular dispersion of EHBIPOA

The quantum spin Hall state materials have recently attracted much attention owing to their potential applications in the design of spintronic devices. Based on density functional theory calculations and crystal field theory, we study electronic structures and topological properties of functionalized thallene films. Two different hydrogenation styles (Tl2H and Tl2H2) are considered, which can drastically vary the electronic and topological behaviors of the thallene. Due to the C3v symmetry of the two systems, the px and py orbitals at the Γ point have the non-Dirac band degeneracy. With spin-o

Electronic structure theory, i.e., quantum chemistry, is the fundamental building block for many problems in computational chemistry. We present a new distributed computing framework (BigChem), which allows for an efficient solution of many quantum chemistry problems in parallel. BigChem is designed to be easily composable and leverages industry-standard middleware (e.g., Celery, RabbitMQ, and Redis) for distributed approaches to large scale problems. BigChem can harness any collection of worker nodes, including ones on cloud providers (such as AWS or Azure), local clusters, or supercomputer c

Two-dimensional metal halide perovskites are emerging materials for quantum light emission and neuromorphic computing owing to their quantum-confined structures and tunable optoelectronic properties. Beyond structural dimensionality, the presence of multiple crystallographically distinct halide sites within a single metal halide octahedron presents a unique opportunity to engineer functionality at the subunit-cell level. Here, we report a light-driven, reversible halide-ion isomerization in single-crystalline BA2PbBrxI4-x (BA = butylammonium, x = 1-3), where ions switch between distinct local

The nitrate anion (NO3-) is abundant in environmental aqueous phases, including aerosols, surface waters, and snow, where its photolysis releases nitrogen oxides back into the atmosphere. Nitrate photolysis occurs via two channels: (1) the formation of NO2 and O- and (2) the formation of NO2- and O(3P). The occurrence of two reaction channels with very low quantum yield (∼1%) highlights the critical role of the solvation environment and spin-forbidden electronic transitions, which remain unexplained at the molecular level. We investigate the two photolysis channels in water using quantum chemi

The "green" copper halides with one-dimensional polyhedron chains are very interesting novel semiconductors. These weakly interacting parallel quantum wires (1D polyhedron chains) play key roles in their photophysical properties. Unlike Cs3Cu2I5, which has been much investigated, its homologous compounds Cs3Cu2Cl5 and CsCu2Cl3 remain less studied and their properties are controversial. Both of them are composed of specific 1D-polyhedron-chains. We report the synthesis and comparatively study the photophysical properties of the single crystals of Cs3Cu2Cl5 and CsCu2Cl3. They exhibit green and o

CONTEXT: Protecting copper against corrosion in harsh acidic conditions continues to be a significant challenge in materials research. This study examined three natural curcuminoids from Curcuma longa: curcumin (CUR), demethoxycurcumin (DEM), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BIS), as environmentally benign corrosion inhibitors. Density functional theory (DFT) studies indicated that CUR possesses the shortest HOMO-LUMO energy gap (3.606 eV), the highest global softness, and the highest electrophilicity index, signifying increased chemical reactivity and robust donor-acceptor interactions. DEM exhibite

The possibility of finding the fragmentation routes by theoretical methods led us to compare the molecular ions between neutral molecules of benzene, aniline, and o-, m-, and p-nitroaniline, using the density functional theory (DFT), under an aug-cc-pVDZ base set and a B3LYP exchange-correlation functional. After determining the structure and electronic energy of neutral and doubly ionized species, we used a new protocol based on analyzing Wiberg's binding indexes and the quantum theory of atoms in Bader molecules (QTAIM). The charge transfer and electronic distribution in aromatic monomers in…

For ethylene carbonate on the (100) surface of lithium, we calculate the adsorption energy in two binding motifs and the barrier height for a ring-opening decomposition reaction. We validate a scheme for producing results in the thermodynamic limit by correcting results obtained on finite lithium clusters containing only 40-100 atoms, which enables the use of hybrid density functionals, random-phase approximation, and correlated wavefunction theories, such as coupled-cluster theory and auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo. We find that the high-level theories agree to within 2-5 kcal/mol and ca

Spin defects in atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising for quantum applications, particularly quantum sensing. The long coherence times of the spin defects enable high sensitivity in measurements of the fluctuations of the targeted physical parameters. However, the nuclear-spin bath remains a major source of decoherence. Here, we reveal the presence of optically addressable spin defects in germanium disulfide (β-GeS2) characterized by a wide bandgap and potential nuclear-spin-free lattice. Coherent control of the spin defects has been successfully demonstrated, and the co

Non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior and strange metallicity, often marked by resistivity linear in temperature and the breakdown of Fermi liquid quasiparticles, are recurring themes in strongly correlated quantum materials, ranging from high-temperature cuprates to twisted van der Waals heterostructures. Enormous efforts are being made to uncover the origin of NFL underlying strange metallicity, yet progress remains slow. Here, we report appearance of an NFL phase in a discontinuous metal-NFL-insulator transition of the Holstein model away from half-filling. The NFL appears as a distinct ground st

The study of topology in quantum materials has fundamentally advanced the understanding in condensed matter physics and potential applications in next-generation quantum information technology. Recently, the discovery of a topological Chern phase in the spin-orbit-coupled Kagome lattice TbMn6 Sn6 has attracted considerable interest. Whereas these phenomena highlight the contribution of momentum space Berry curvature and Chern gap on the electronic transport properties, less is known about the intrinsic real space magnetic texture, which is crucial for understanding the electronic properties an

The interplay between quantum interference, electron-electron interaction (EEI), and disorder is one of the central themes of condensed matter physics. Such interplay can cause high-order magnetoconductance (MC) corrections in semiconductors with weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, it remains unexplored how the magnetotransport properties are modified by the high-order quantum corrections in the electron systems of symplectic symmetry class, which include topological insulators (TIs), Weyl semimetals, graphene with negligible intervalley scattering, and semiconductors with strong SOC. We investigate the impact of nonunique decompositions of mixed states on energy transfer. Mixed states generally have nonunique decompositions into pure states in quantum theory and, by definition, in other nonclassical probabilistic theories. We consider energy transfers constituting deterministic energy harvesting, wherein the source transfers energy to the harvester but not entropy. We use the possibility of nonunique decompositions to derive that, if source states in a set jointly lead to deterministic energy harvesting for the given harvesting system and interaction, then that set can be …

In quantum field theory (QFT), the "vacuum" is not just empty space but the lowest-energy state of a quantum field. If the energy landscape has multiple local minima, the local ground states are the false vacuum (FV) which can tunnel toward the global ground state (true vacuum, TV). This process exhibits signature akin to classical supercooled gas transitions and many-body tunneling in discrete quantum systems. Here, we study the FV decay and bubble nucleation in a Rydberg atom ring. The 1/r^{6} van der Waals interactions and individual-site addressability allow us to explore physics beyond th

The synthesis of a series of photostable [b]-benzothieno-fused BOPHY derivatives is reported via one-pot condensation of formylated isoindoles or formylindoles with hydrazine and subsequent boron complexation. These dyes show strong absorption in the deep red region and acceptable fluorescence quantum yields (∼30%). The two fused benzothiophene moieties are slightly deviated from the BOPHY core (with dihedral angles of 6.1 and 10.2°). This slightly twisted conformation brings an enhanced spin-orbit coupling and a reduced energy band gap between singlet and triplet states. The enhanced intersys
