A study of 105 odontogenic cysts revealed the presence of pigmented cells in the cyst wall in 38% of the cases. The frequency of pigmented cells was higher in the inflammatory odontogenic cysts than in the development cysts. Although isolated pigmented cells were seen within the epithelial lining and cyst cavity, the larger collections were closely associated with cholesterol crystals and hemosiderin deposits; they contained light brown cytoplasmic pigment which manifested sudanophilia, acid-fastness, silver reduction capacity, PAS positivity and yellow autofluorescence in ultraviolet light. This study reports on the first time three-dimensional presentation of odontogenic cysts demonstrated by means of a simple histological method. Histological sections of biopsy material having been embedded in paraffin were projected on cardboard. There have been a number of reports of brain abscess suggesting an odontogenic etiology after dental treatment procedures or oral infections, but the diagnosis was mainly by exclusion rather than based on evidence. We present a case of a brain abscess due to Strepto-coccus constellatus in a 27-year-old-immunocompetent woman who underwent extraction of the primary molar and eradication of a radicular cyst some weeks before.
