PURPOSE: CSMed® wound dressing, a dressing with various herb extracts, was tested for its therapeutic effect in radiation dermatitis of breast and head-and-neck cancer patients.
METHODS: This study included 20 breast cancer patients and 10 head-and-neck cancer patients. Half of the irradiated area was covered with CSMed® and the other half was under routine treatment. The severity of radiation dermatitis was evaluated with radiation therapy oncology group (RTOG) grade throughout the treatment and the follow-up period. The RTOG grade between the dressed and undressed area were compared to illu

BACKGROUND: Barrier films or dressings were reported to be effective in preventing radiation dermatitis (RD) in breast cancer patients, but their comparative efficacy is unknown.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed on Embase, MEDLINE and Cochrane CENTRAL Registry of Clinical Trials from inception to October 20, 2023. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing barrier films or dressings to the standard of care (SOC) or other interventions were included. We estimated summary odds ratios and mean differences using network meta-analysis with random effects. This study was reg

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is essential for treating head and neck cancer but often leads to severe toxicity. Traditional predictors include anatomical location, tumor extent, and dosimetric data. Recently, biomarkers have been explored to better predict and understand toxicity. This review aims to summarize the current literature, assess data quality, and guide future research.
METHODS: Two reviewers independently screened EMBASE and PubMed for studies published between 2010 and 2023. Endpoints were dermatitis, mucositis, sticky saliva/xerostomia, and dysphagia. Statistical analysis was perfor

PURPOSE: The study aims to assess the feasibility, safety, and tolerability of CareMin650, a new photobiomodulation device, in patients treated by radiotherapy (RT) and to collect preliminary data on efficacy for prevention and treatment of oral mucositis (OM) and radiation dermatitis (RD).
METHODS: Safe PBM is a French, multicentric, prospective, non-comparative study which include patients with head and neck cancer (H&NC, cohort A) or breast cancer (BC, cohort B) treated in prophylactic (cohorts A1 and B1) or curative setting (cohort A2 and B2). Prophylactic treatment was administered from

AIM: To compare a gel made with chamomile (Chamomilla recutita) with a cream of urea as an intervention to delay the time to occurrence of radiation dermatitis.
BACKGROUND: Radiation dermatitis is one of the most common adverse effects of radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer. It is characterized by erythema, itching, pain, skin breakage and burning sensation, and there is no consensus on how to prevent it.
DESIGN: The study is a randomized controlled clinical trial.
METHODS: We will recruit 48 individuals with head and neck cancer who will be starting their radiotherapy and ra

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the application of "tennis racket" flap with fascial pedicle on the healthy chest for radiation ulcer after surgical treatment of breast cancer.
METHODS: The " tennis racket" flap was designed on the healthy chest along the cartilage with fascia pedicle near the sternum. 9 cases were treated. The flaps size ranged from 5.0 cm x 3.5 cm to 13 cm x 11 cm with pedicle size of 2-8 cm in length and 2.0-3.0 cm in width.
RESULTS: All the 9 flaps survived completely with satisfactory appearance. The patients were followed up for 2 months to 3 years without ulcer reoccurrence.

Ionizing and ultraviolet radiations, as well as burns, can selectively damage and immunologically mark the cutaneous area they act on through direct and indirect mechanisms. After the causal event has disappeared, the affected skin district may appear clinically normal, but its immune behavior is often compromised forever. In fact, irradiated or burned skin areas undergo a destabilization of the immune control, which can lead to either a reduction of immunity (as suggested by the facilitated local occurrence of tumors and infections) or an excess of it (as suggested by the possible local onset

Acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) is a common side effect of radiation therapy and is characterized by erythema, dry desquamation or moist desquamation. This wet desquamation is a very painful condition for the patient and often leads to interruption of radiotherapy. The objective of this article is to assess the efficacy of topical corticosteroids in the prevention of ARD compared with placebo, other topical medication or no treatment. The prophylactic application of topical corticosteroid among patients undergoing radiotherapy appears to significantly reduce the incidence of ARD, specifically

Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is a rare cutaneous reaction occurring within a previously irradiated field, precipitated by certain drugs. A case of RRD most likely induced by doxorubicin is presented and illustrated together with a review of the literature.

Radiotherapy is a critical component in the treatment of breast cancer, a disease that is estimated to have affected 203,500 US women in 2002. According to the data from some series, an estimated 90% of patients treated with radiotherapy for breast cancer will develop a degree of radiation-induced dermatitis. This review describes the indications and techniques of radiotherapy for breast cancer. The pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and contributing factors of radiation-related skin injury are discussed. A review of recent clinical research addressing skin toxicity is provided.

Acute radiation dermatitis is an uncommon complication of fluoroscopic procedures. Cases secondary to cardiac catheterization are infrequently reported in the literature. The risk of developing this reaction is directly related to the skin dose of radiation, which is affected by the type of procedure, the technique used to achieve appropriate penetration, the duration of exposure, and the patient's body habitus. We report a case of acute radiation dermatitis following prolonged coronary angiography initially presenting as a fixed drug eruption.

Sweet's syndrome is a reactive dermatosis clinically characterized by fever, leukocytosis, and multiple, erythematous, painful plaques. Histopathologically, the lesions show edema of the papillary dermis and a dermal infiltrate mainly composed of neutrophils, without vasculitis. We describe a patient with breast carcinoma and Sweet's syndrome mostly involving previously irradiated skin.

An isomorphic response is defined as a nonspecific skin stimulus eliciting a disease-specific skin reaction. We report on the development of the Koebner phenomenon in a 32 year old patient with psoriasis after skin testing with UVB at a dose above 0.055 J/cm2. In addition we describe a 28 years old patient who developed new psoriatic plaques in the areas affected by the virus after a varicella infection.

Randomized trials have shown that sucralfate is effective in the management of acute radiation reactions such as oesophagitis, mucositis and proctitis. However, at the time of commencement of the present trial, it had never been used in the management of moist desquamation of the skin. The purpose of the present study was to assess the value of sucralfate cream in the management of moist desquamation during radiotherapy. Patients who developed moist desquamation during radiation were eligible. Patients were stratified by site of radiotherapy into three groups: (i) the head and neck; (ii) the b

The authors present a case of radiation recall dermatitis occurring in a patient receiving paclitaxel shortly after completion of radiation therapy. A brief review of previously reported taxane-induced radiation recall reactions is provided.
