BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures have a psychological impact on patients, with the pain and disability caused by these injuries potentially leading to psychological distress. It is not known whether dominant-side and nondominant-side distal radius fractures cause more psychological distress in patients.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Compared with patients who have distal radius fractures on the nondominant side, do patients with dominant-side fractures experience greater pain? (2) Do patients with dominant-side distal radius fractures have greater disability? (3) Do patients with dominant-side d…

This study reports the results of open reduction and internal fixation of 25 dorsally displaced distal radial fractures using a specifically designed plate for the distal radius, the AO pi plate (Synthes Ltd, Paoli, USA). Twenty-one of these fractures were complex and intra-articular (AO Type 'C'). Measurement of range of motion of the affected wrist at an average follow-up of 16 months revealed a median return of 60 degrees of wrist extension, 40 degrees of wrist flexion, 90 degrees of pronation and 90 degrees of supination. Radiographic assessment revealed restoration of normal radial length

Monteggia fracture constitutes about 5-10% of the forearm fractures. Monteggia fracture by definition is proximal ulnar fracture with disruption of proximal radioulnar joint. Bado classified Monteggia fracture dislocation into four types and Jupiter subclassified type II Bado's fractures into four types. The associated injury in the form of distal radial fractures and distal humerus fractures are rare though many cases of distal radial physeal injuries have been reported in paediatric population. Hereby we report a rare association of type IIA Monteggia fracture dislocation with ipsilateral di

UNLABELLED: Lower hip bone density showed the most consistent association with distal ulna involvement in surgically treated distal radius fractures, whereas local fracture severity showed minimal discriminatory value. Hip bone density was particularly associated with the ulnar metaphyseal subtype, characterizing conditional fracture-pattern variation within this selected population.
PURPOSE: To characterize clinical and skeletal features across fracture subtypes within surgically treated low-energy distal radius fractures and to distinguish ulnar metaphyseal fracture from ulnar styloid fract…

PURPOSE: The NOM (non-operative management) of distal radius fractures (DRF) is influenced by various factors. This study seeks to determine whether poor fracture alignment correlates with poor outcome.
METHODS: Over a period of three years, a study was conducted on conservatively treated DRF involving 127 patients, 104 women (81.9%) and 23 men (18.1%). The average age was 70.6 years (SD ± 19.1; range 21 to 102 years). The patient population is categorized into two groups according to radiological healing outcomes: Group I and Group II. The classification threshold was established as (1) > 10…

BACKGROUND: The most common upper limb fracture encountered in clinical practice is distal radius fracture (DRF). They frequently occur due to falls onto an outstretched hand or other traumatic incidents, resulting in a break in the radius near the wrist joint. DRFs often present a spectrum of injuries and are a common reason for emergency department visits, affecting approximately one out of every six patients seeking medical attention in this setting.
METHODS: This systematic review was performed according to the guidelines of PRISMA, using the electronic database search of PubMed, Embase,

BACKGROUND: The most common location for articular fractures of the radial head is often reported to be the anterior lateral aspect of the radial head with the arm in neutral position. However, these findings mainly base on clinical observations rather than precise biomechanical measurements. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the formation of proximal radius fractures, the association between axial forces and fracture morphology, energy to failure and bone stiffness in a biomechanical in-vitro setup.
METHODS: 18 fresh-frozen cadaveric radii performed axial load compression with 10 mm/…

The insertion of two elastic spring-pins in the marrow cavity of the radius gives automatically setting of the radius distal extremity's fracture. The stabilization so obtained is enough to avoid any kind of plaster immobilization. This quick and simple intervention was systematically practised during a two year period for all fractures of the lower-end of the radius. The pins are introduced directly through the skin without the need for incision. Patients are encouraged to undertake their normal activities immediately after the operation. The operation technic is described in detail in the fo

PURPOSE: Extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon ruptures are a rare but recognized complication following distal radius fractures (DRFs) with several proposed mechanisms for their pathophysiology. Existing literature on the incidence of EPL ruptures has largely been limited to small, single-center studies. The purpose of this study was to define the incidence of EPL ruptures following operatively and non-operatively treated DRFs using a large, multicenter database.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed using the TriNetX database. Patients aged 18 to 90 years who sustained a di…

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures commonly require manipulation in the emergency department. Procedural sedation is frequently used but is resource-intensive and associated with potential adverse events. Haematoma block may offer a practical alternative, particularly in busy emergency departments, but its comparative efficacy and safety are uncertain.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether haematoma block provides a comparable procedural success rate to procedural sedation, and whether there is a difference in the likelihood of adverse events, in adult patients undergoing manipulation of distal rad…

PURPOSE: Various fixation methods are available for intra-articular distal radius fractures, depending on column involvement. Some rely solely on ulnar hook plates, while others use specific "extra distal" plates that address both columns. To date, no comparative studies have evaluated these techniques. This study compared the fixation by ulnar hook plate combined with one or two percutaneous screws (Group 1) in the radial styloid with extra distal plates fixing both columns (Group 2). Functional outcomes were hypothesized to be similar, whereas complication rates were expected to differ.
