The concentrations of copper and zinc in plasma, blood cells, liver and kidneys were determined in a study performed on normal female rats, and in female rats with carrageenan induced pleurisy. In the normal rat, the total amount of both metals increases, from 51 to 79 days of age, in all the compartments examined. The effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in the treatment of caustic alkaline injury to the esophagus is examined. Caustic esophageal burns were produced in rats by irrigation with NaOH. Stricture formation was less frequent in animals concurrently treated with either steroids (48%) or NAC (48%) than in control animals that received only the alkaline injury (74%). Periosteal proprioceptive nerve receptors may act as mechanoreceptors of long bones during adaptive remodeling after fracture. They may also contribute to the mechanisms of coordinated functional activity of fractured limbs and thus inhibit harmful overloading of fracture callus. The area of proprioceptive nerve receptors around the distal part of the rat fibula was stripped surgically, and a standard fracture of the fibular shaft was produced. Animals failed to unite their fractures and developed mainly atrophic nonunions. Atrophy of ununited fragments was due to osteoclastic bone resorption.

The intravascular clearance of type 3 Streptococcus pneumoniae was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats. Sham celiotomy was performed on 20 animals while another 20 rats underwent splenectomy. The authors report the modifications of platelet rate in the blood in a succession of total and partial splenectomies (25%, 50%, 75%) from the 40th day after operation till normalization. The values of platelet rate got back to standard in the 50th day in the animals subjected to 25% splenectomy, and in the 60th, 70th and 80th day from operation in the rats with 50%, 75% and 100% splenectomy.
