Effect of Yi-Nao-Jie-Yu Prescription on Post-Stroke Depression in Rats using Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion Combined with Behavioral Restraint.

Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common, treatable complication of stroke, characterized by depressive and somatic symptoms that impair patient recovery and quality of life. This study describes a protocol combining middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) with behavioral restraint and isolation housing to establish a rat PSD model, and evaluates the therapeutic effect of Yi-nao-jie-yu Prescription (YNJYP) on adult neurogenesis in PSD rats. For model establishment, rats in the stroke, PSD, fluoxetine hydrochloride (FXT), and YNJYP groups underwent MCAO: a monofilament suture was advanced from

Deacetyl xylopic acid exhibits synergistic antidepressant-like effects and augments fluoxetine activity in a chronic restraint-induced depression model in mice.

Xylopic acid (XA) and the deacetyl derivative (dXA) have been shown to exhibit antidepressant activity in acute models of depression in mice. This study evaluated and compared the effect of the deacetyl derivative in a chronic restrain model of depression. In the first phase of the study, the synergistic potential of dXA was evaluated using the mouse tail suspension test (TST) and forced swim test (FST). In the second phase, mice were subjected to chronic restraint stress for 42 days, starting from day 0, in ventilated tubes (0800-1400 h). On day 42, stress-naïve and stressed mice were assesse

Extinction-restraint intervention eradicates fear memory encoded in BLA engram cells via D2 receptor-mediated dopaminergic modulation from locus coeruleus.

Despite undergoing exposure therapy, individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently experience relapses when confronted with trauma reminders. This study examined the impact of extinction-restraint intervention (Ext-Res) in a PTSD-related fear relapse model. We found that reactivation of basolateral amygdala engram cells (BLAengram) correlates with relapse following fear reinstatement. Post-extinction BLAengram activation induced fear relapse, whereas Ext-Res effectively protected relapse and facilitated BLAengram reactivation. Our investigation into the neural circuitry con

Characteristics of Restraint Use on Inpatient Medical/Surgical and Psychiatric Units at a Tertiary Care County Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Racism contributes to worse patient care and health outcomes in the USA. Disparities in restraint application have been documented in the emergency department context, yet inpatient medical/surgical and psychiatric settings are less studied. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this analysis is to determine factors associated with restraint use within the inpatient medical/surgical and psychiatric populations at a tertiary, academic medical center. We predict that Black, American Indian, Native American, or Alaska Native, or Hispanic/Latinx racialized identity, age, presence of med

Long-lasting cardiovascular modulation in female rats induced by topiramate administration during pre-adolescence.

Studies showed that administration of topiramate (TPM) could cause cardiovascular changes, but the enduring effects of this use during early life phases are unknown. The present work evaluated whether treatment with TPM administered during pre-adolescence would cause long-term effects in adulthood on cardiovascular parameters in female rats. In this way, female Wistar rats were treated from postnatal day (PND) 16 to 28 with water or TPM (41mg/kg/day) via gavage. In adulthood, at PND85, the female rats were tested by identify the oestrus phase. Each one in the oestrus phase were subjected to ca

Acyl-CoA binding protein for the experimental treatment of anorexia.

Extracellular acyl-coenzyme A binding protein [ACBP encoded by diazepam binding inhibitor (DBI)] is a phylogenetically ancient appetite stimulator that is secreted in a nonconventional, autophagy-dependent fashion. Here, we show that low ACBP/DBI plasma concentrations are associated with poor prognosis in patients with anorexia nervosa, a frequent and often intractable eating disorder. In mice, anorexia induced by chronic restraint stress (CRS) is accompanied by a reduction in circulating ACBP/DBI concentrations. We engineered a chemical-genetic system for the secretion of ACBP/DBI through a b

Increasing the delivery of upper limb constraint-induced movement therapy programs for stroke and brain injury survivors: evaluation of the ACTIveARM project.

PURPOSE: To increase the number of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) programs provided by rehabilitation services. METHODS: A before-and-after implementation study involving nine rehabilitation services. The implementation package to help change practice included file audit-feedback cycles, 2-day workshops, poster reminders, a community-of-practice and drop-in support. File audits were conducted at baseline, every three months for 1.5 years, and once after support ceased to evaluate maintenance of change. CIMT participant outcomes were collected to evaluate CIMT effectiveness and mai

The Realities of Pregnancy and Mothering While Incarcerated.

Women of reproductive age may experience pregnancy and mothering in a correctional environment designed for men. Rates of incarceration for women in the United States are high by international standards, and they continue to rise. Mothers were often single mothers prior to incarceration, and they are often separated from their children for the first time upon entering prison. Pregnancy, delivery, lactation, and parenting each require special consideration. Outcomes of pregnancy in prison are better overall than for similarly disadvantaged women in the community. Breastfeeding, despite being re

Nervous mechanisms of restraint water-immersion stress-induced gastric mucosal lesion.

Stress-induced gastric mucosal lesion (SGML) is one of the most common visceral complications after trauma. Exploring the nervous mechanisms of SGML has become a research hotspot. Restraint water-immersion stress (RWIS) can induce GML and has been widely used to elucidate the nervous mechanisms of SGML. It is believed that RWIS-induced GML is mainly caused by the enhanced activity of vagal parasympathetic nerves. Many central nuclei, such as the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus, nucleus of the solitary tract, supraoptic nucleus and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, mediodorsal nucl

Peripheral nerve injury impairs the ability to maintain behavioural flexibility following acute stress in the rat.

Chronic neuropathic pain often leads to impaired cognition and reduced behavioural flexibility. This study used a rat model to investigate if a peripheral nerve injury, with or without an additional acute psychological stress, alters behavioural flexibility and goal directed behaviour as measured by sensitivity to devaluation. Neuropathic pain was induced by a chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve. CCI, sham-injury and naïve rats were trained to press two levers for two rewards. In outcome devaluation tests, one of the rewards was devalued by pre-feeding it to satiety, immedia

"Excited delirium syndrome": is it a cause of death?

Excited delirium syndrome (EDS) has become a controversial and vexing forensic issue due to its association with restraint and sudden unexpected death. Although some authorities and jurisdictions recognised EDS as a cause of death there is no consensus among the medical community in this regard. The overlapping nature of the spectrum of antemortem behaviours and signs with many natural disease processes complicates this issue further. We describe two deaths which initially presented as EDS-like behaviour during restraint. In the first case, the deceased was travelling on a long distance flight

Does swaddling influence developmental dysplasia of the hip?: An experimental study of the traditional straight-leg swaddling model in neonatal rats.

BACKGROUND: The overall effect of swaddling has been controversial for centuries. Its positive effect on the psychological development of the infant has popularized it in European and North American countries, but its negative effect on the development of the hip is of great concern. In our experiment, the influence of straight-leg swaddling in an animal model was observed radiographically and histologically. METHODS: One hundred and twelve neonatal rats were divided into a control group and three experimental groups that were swaddled with use of surgical tape in a manner simulating the huma

Intragastrically administered lysophosphatidic acids protect against gastric ulcer in rats under water-immersion restraint stress.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Lysophosphatidic acid exerts important physiological effects on many types of animal cells through its specific binding to several G protein-coupled receptors. In particular, its potent wound-healing effect has attracted much attention. To determine whether lysophosphatidic acids in a foodstuff and Chinese medicine are effective in protecting against gastric ulcer, we subjected rats to water-immersion restraint stress. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three direct administrations of a solution of lysophosphatidic acid with a C18 fatty acyl group to the rat stomach in a concentration r

The antioxidant potential of alprazolam on the redox status of peripheral blood leukocytes in restraint-stressed mice.

AIMS: Stress can cause adverse reactions in the body that induce a wide range of biochemical and behavioral changes. Oxidative damage is an established outcome of stress that has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mood and anxiety disorders. Anxiolytic drugs are widely prescribed to treat these conditions; however, no animal study has investigated the effect of benzodiazepines on the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the peripheral blood leukocytes of stressed mice. MAIN METHODS: Mice were immobilized for a period of 6h. Alprazolam (0.1-0.8 mg/kg of body weight) was

Video recording study of infants undergoing primary cheiloplasty: are arm restraints really needed?

OBJECTIVE: Arm restraints are traditionally used during the perioperative period for cleft surgery to prevent the affected infant from damaging the wound, but the benefits of this standard practice have been controversial. To investigate whether the use of arm restraints provides any benefit to the patient, a video recording study of infants undergoing primary cheiloplasty was conducted. DESIGN: Analysis of video recordings of infants undergoing cheiloplasty. SETTING: Shizuoka Children's Hospital, Shizuoka, Japan. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight patients who underwent primary cheiloplasty were

Enhanced xenobiotic-induced hepatotoxicity and Kupffer cell activation by restraint-induced stress.

We tested the hypothesis that environmental stress is a predisposing factor for liver injury by examining the effect of acute restraint on liver injury provoked by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and allyl alcohol. Mice were immobilized using Plexiglas restraint cages, producing a form of psychogenic stress, whereas other animals were allowed to roam free. Serum alanine aminotransferase levels were elevated significantly in restrained animals after administration of varying doses of CCl4 or allyl alcohol that did not produce liver injury in unrestrained animals. This enhanced liver injury after CC

Medial olivocochlear efferent activity in awake guinea pigs.

Cochlear outer hair cells receive numerous connections from the medial olivocochlear efferent neurons. Medial olivocochlear efferent activity is highly dependent on the level of anesthesia. The present study was thus designed to investigate the efficiency of contralateral white noise stimulation on the distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in a large number of awake guinea pigs, and to compare in the same animals the effect of urethane- and pentobarbitone-anesthesia. The monitoring of DPOAEs during contralateral white noise stimulation in awake animals requires the development of a

[Case of circulatory depression in an obese patient in prone position during general anesthesia].

A 25-year-old man [120 kg, 180 cm (body mass index=37 kg x m(-2)] underwent laminectomy and discectomy under general anesthesia in the prone position. Hall frame was used for supporting his body. In spite of a small amount of bleeding, the patient showed metabolic acidosis and hypotension with limb cyanosis one hour after changing position. Ephedrine hydrochloride was effective for the treatment of his hypotension. However, limb cyanosis continued until turning him to the supine position. Anuria continued during prone position. We consider that Hall frame allows patient's abdomen to hang freel
