OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and improve the diagnosis and surgical treatment of the retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF).
METHODS: The medical records of 26 patients with the RPF (21 men and 5 women with mean age 54 years) were analyzed retrospectively. They were been treated from January 1996 to May 2007. Fourteen cases received double-J inter-ureter drainage or pricking pyelostomy and 9 of 15 cases who received open surgery were performed bilateral ureterolysis with their ureters translocated intraperitoneally.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RF) is a rare disease in children. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with a 2-month history of dorsal pain and a 2-week history of fever. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum C-reactive protein value were high. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large heterogeneous retroperitoneal mass, suggestive of RF. Percutaneous biopsy of inguinal lymph node provided the diagnosis of anaplastic large cell lymphoma. This is the first report of RF revealing malignancy in childhood. Riedel's thyroiditis is a rare chronic inflammatory disease of the thyroid characterised by an invasive fibrotic process. We present a lady with newly diagnosed hypothyroidism, rapidly enlarging hard, fixed goitre, strongly positive thyroid antibodies and raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). We present a 78-year-old woman with clinical acute hypopituitarism in whom pathologic findings showed lymphocytic hypophysitis and retroperitoneal fibrosis. Lymphocytic hypophysitis should be included in the differential diagnosis of hypopituitarism at any age. The association with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis suggest an autoimmune origin for this entity.

The case history of a 68-year-old woman with progressive dysphagia caused by extrinsic compression of the oesophagus by an aberrant right subclavian artery or arteria lusoria is presented. Previous history mentioned a Riedel's thyroiditis, idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis and an aortic sclerosis. The authors want to report the case because it is an example of an association between lusoria dysphagia and retroperitoneal fibrosis, the connective tissue disease responsible for Riedel's thyroiditis, and perhaps, aortic sclerosis. This is the first report of this particular association.

In 1972-1991 at the urological clinic in Hradec Králové 13 patients with retroperitoneal fibrosis were treated. In six idiopathic fibrosis, primary fibrosis (morbus Ormond) was involved. By surgery only one patient with the primary disease was treated, five patients with secondary fibrosis only conservatively (by nephrostomy, by introduction of an ureteral endoprosthesis and prednisone administration 1200-1500 mg in total). We report a rare case of pleural involvement followed by idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis in a 55-year-old man. He complained of right chest pain and his chest radiogram showed pleural thickening and calcification. Chest X-ray computed tomogram (CT) also showed a mass-like pleural thickening and a soft tissue density lesion surrounding the thoracic aorta, suggesting fibrosis.
