Tick abundances and prevalences of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agent of Lyme disease, were investigated in four South London parks. A total of 360 transects were sampled using three methods of collection (blanket, leggings and flags) simultaneously. No ticks were found on Wimbledon Common or at Hampton Court, but 1118 Ixodes ricinus (Ixodida: Ixodidae) ticks were collected at Richmond and Bushy Parks. At Richmond Park, lower canopy humidity [odds ratio (OR) 0.94; P = 0.005], increased mat depth (OR 1.15; P < 0.001) and increased soil moisture (OR 1.40; P = 0.0…

In this study, we detected Rickettsia helvetica, Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia muris, Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, and Bartonella sp. infections in wild rodents and ticks collected from the vegetation of central Slovakia. The microorganisms were identified by PCR and sequencing. Yellow-necked mice (Apodemus flavicollis) were infected with E. muris and Bartonella sp., while ticks Ixodes ricinus collected from the vegetation were infected with R. helvetica, Candidatus M. mitochondrii, Candidatus N. mikurensis, A. phagocytophilum, and E. muris.

Babesia microti and Anaplasma phagocytophilum was recently reported with a minimum prevalence of 0.9 and 1.3% in Hungary based on the PCR-sequencing analysis of 452 European sheep ticks (Ixodes ricinus). These results and the epidemiological data of the neighbouring countries indicate that human cases caused by these pathogens may occur in the country. The aim of the present paper is to summarise the current knowledge on the morphology, life cycle and distribution of B. microti and A. phagocytophilum, and the epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and control of babesiosis and g…

We have described ten cases of respiratory allergy to the pollen of Mercurialis annua in the area of Bordighera (Riviera dei Fiori) on the Italian Mediterranean coast. The incidence of sensitivity is only 0.9% in a population of 1081 patients with pollinosis. Since the Euphorbiaceae family (spurges) contains strongly sensitizing allergens (eg, seeds of Ricinus communis and latex of Hevea brasiliensis) our findings raise the possibility that respiratory allergy to the pollens of Mercurialis annua and other spurges has been underestimated throughout the world.

Neoehrlichia mikurensis is an intracellular bacterium transmitted in Europe and Asia by ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. Interest in this bacterium has increased since it was demonstrated to be responsible for febrile syndromes in patients. To date, most clinical cases have been reported in northern Europe, but case series have also been described in central Europe and China. Notably, thrombotic events occurred during the course of the disease. We investigated the presence of N. mikurensis in 10,885 I. ricinus nymphs in two regions of France (Alsace and Brittany) collected between 2013 and…

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia spp. are human pathogens that cause a number of diseases and are transmitted by arthropods, such as ixodid ticks. Estonia is one of few regions where the distribution area of two medically important tick species, Ixodes persulcatus and I. ricinus, overlaps. The nidicolous rodent-associated Ixodes trianguliceps has also recently been shown to be present in Estonia. Although no data are available on human disease(s) caused by tick-borne Rickettsia spp. in Estonia, the presence of three Rickettsia species in non-nidicolous ticks has been previously reported. The aim of this…

The pathogens causing Lyme disease are all vectored by generalist tick species found on a wide range of vertebrates, but spatial and annual variation in host use has rarely been quantified. We here compare the load of Ixodes ricinus (the vector) on small mammals and investigate the infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (the pathogen) involved in the enzootic transmission cycle of Lyme disease in two contrasting ecosystems in Norway from 2014 to 2016. The most common larval tick host in the eastern region was the bank vole, while the common shrew dominated in the western region of N…

Anaplasmosis and babesiosis are major tick-borne diseases with a high economic impact but are also a public health concern. Blood samples collected in the spring, summer, and autumn of 2010 from 65 cows in seven different farms in Belgium were monitored with an indirect immunofluorescence antibody test to assess seroprevalence against these pathogens. Seroprevalences to Babesia spp. were measured as 10.7%, 20%, and 12.3% in spring, summer, and autumn, respectively, whereas seroprevalences to Anaplasma phagocytophilum were 30.8%, 77%, and 56.9%, respectively. A total of 805 Ixodes ricinus ticks…

The impact of climate change on vector-borne infectious diseases is currently controversial. In Europe the primary arthropod vectors of zoonotic diseases are ticks, which transmit Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (the agent of Lyme disease), tick-borne encephalitis virus and louping ill virus between humans, livestock and wildlife. Ixodes ricinus ticks and reported tick-borne disease cases are currently increasing in the UK. Theories for this include climate change and increasing host abundance. This study aimed to test how I. ricinus tick abundance might be influenced by climate change in Scot…

The results of a longitudinal epidemiological survey in two contrasting habitats in an area of the Mazury Lakes district of Poland indicate that both host and vector (Ixodes ricinus) densities, may be the most important risk factors for the tick-transmitted spirochetes of Borrelia burgdirferi s.l. However, the results also highlight that even related host species, such as the wild rodents Apodemus flavicollis and Clethrionomys glareolus that share the same habitat, can show quite different dynamics of tick infestation. We provide evidence that the woodland populations of A. flavicollis and C. …

The ticks Ixodes ricinus and I. persulcatus are the dominant tick species in the forest ecosystems of the temporary zone of Eurasia. They occur within their areals in every types of forests except arid and marsh biotopes. The density of tick populations per square unit exceed many times those of dominant species of mammals and birds living in the same ecosystems. In optimal conditions the abundance of hungry larvae per 1 square km varies from hundreds of thousands to several millions, that of nymphs-from thousands to several hundreds of thousands, and that of imago counts several thousands. Th…

The castor bean tick, Ixodes ricinus, is common in woodlands in most of Denmark. Besides Borrelia burgdorferi, it can harbour a number of pathogenic microorganisms such as tick-borne encephalitis virus, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia helvetica, Francisella tularensis, Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis, Bartonella spp., Borrelia miyamotoi and Babesia spp. These tick-borne infections should be a differential diagnostic consideration during the tick season in Denmark. We review the distribution, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of these microorganisms.

BACKGROUND: Climate warming is altering the seasonal timing of many ecological interactions. Migratory birds typically time their movements using photoperiodic cues, whereas the activity of ectoparasites such as ticks is largely temperature dependent. This difference in environmental drivers may create climate-induced phenological mismatches that reshape host-parasite interactions.
METHODS: We investigated tick infestation in migratory thrushes during late-autumn migration in Belgium, a period historically assumed to fall largely outside the main activity season of Ixodes ricinus. In addition…

A case of granulocytic ehrlichiosis in a moose calf (Alces alces) in Norway is described. The animal was heavily infested with ticks (Ixodes ricinus), and died from a Klebsiella pneumoniae septicemia. Examination of blood smears from the calf revealed cytoplasmic inclusions (morulae) typical of infection with Ehrlichia phagocytophila in the granulocytes. Ehrlichia sp. was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in blood from the calf, and in the ticks. Sequence determination identified it as E. phagocytophila. This is the first report of ehrlichiosis in moose.

During summer 2019, three patients residing by Tisvilde Hegn, Denmark were hospitalised with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) after tick bites. A new TBE virus (TBEV) micro-focus was identified in tick nymphs collected around a playground in Tisvilde Hegn forest. Estimated TBEV prevalence was 8%, higher than in endemic areas around Europe. Whole genome sequencing showed clustering to a TBEV strain from Norway. This is the second time TBEV is found in Ixodes ricinus outside Bornholm, Denmark.

To assess the potential risk for tick-borne agents, Ixodes ricinus were collected from 2 sites in northwestern Poland. The ticks were tested by polymerase chain reaction for coinfection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.), human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) agent, and Babesia microti. Of the 533 processed ticks, 16.7% were positive for B. burgdorferi s. l., 13.3% for B. microti, and 4.5% for the HGE agent. Twenty ticks were coinfected with 2 or 3 of the pathogens.
