Resistin is a potential link between obesity and insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes. In rodents, resistin is primarily expressed in and secreted from mature adipocytes, with some expression in pancreatic islets and portions of the pituitary and hypothalamus. The purpose of this report was to register the presence of Fasciola hepatica in an adult female capybara (Hydrocherus hydrocheris). The macro and microscopical characteristics of hepatic lesions, together with the finding of F. hepatica in mature forms indicate the possible infection of capybara by the trematode.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate rodents' natural infection of Orientia tsutsugamushi (Ot) in some areas of Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, China.
METHODS: DNAs were extracted from spleens of the captured mice and nested-polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) technique was used to detect the Ot-Sta56 gene. Six positive samples were sequenced and analyzed by Clustal X (5.0) and DNA Club software.

Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses that persistently infect rodent hosts without ill-effect. The host persistently excretes virus in urine and saliva. Man becomes infected from the rodents when one enters the ecological niche of the other. There are two major clinical presentations--haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, found worldwide in various forms and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, found only in the Americas. New closantel and chlorambucil prodrugs expected to accumulate in the lymphatic system were evaluated on the filaria Molinema dessetae. The prodrugs of closantel had a delayed effect in vitro on the infective larvae compared to the free drug. The closantel prodrugs were less toxic in vivo than closantel itself. The most active prodrug after treatment at 200 mumol/kg by the oral route was the 1,3-dipalmitoyl-2-succinyl-glycerol-closantel. The susceptibility of Arvicanthis niloticus, Mastomys huberti, Mastomys erythroleucus and Mus musculus was studied to assess the capacity of these rodents to transmit Schistosoma mansoni. Naked mole-rats have no access to obvious sources of vitamin D and therefore have an impoverished vitamin D status. In an investigation into the effects of vitamin D supplementation, inadvertently supraphysiological doses of 130,000 times the normal dose of vitamin D were administered. Within 5 days animals appeared lethargic, with reduced food intake. All but one of the seven animals were killed and blood was collected. A ten year old boy developed lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis following a wild rodent bite. The infection was successfully treated with potassium iodide. Sporotrichosis in humans has followed bites, pecks and stings inflicted by a variety of animals, birds and insects. Investigations of trombiculid mites and Rickettsia tsutsugamushi in wild rodents were made in Ena (Nov. 1988) and Takayama (May 1989) City. In 1980-1986 the authors examined 2,720 small mammals (17 species) from six dumps of wastes in South-Bohemia serologically for leptospirosis. 397 small mammals from the agglomeration of Ceské Budĕjovice and 1,399 from four characteristic biotops in the valley of the river Vltava in South-Bohemia were investigated for a comparison.
