Gender Invariance and Psychometric Properties of the Nonproductive Thoughts Questionnaire for Children.

Perseverative cognitions-rumination and worry-can contribute to mental and somatic health problems in adolescence. Girls usually report stronger rumination or worry than boys even in earlier years across the development age spectrum. Our aim was to test the gender invariance and psychometric properties of the Nonproductive Thoughts Questionnaire for Children (NPTQ-C). Study 1 involved 1,572 students (mean age = 15.39 years, SD = 2.26; 49% boy) recruited representatively from local schools. We applied confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to test the measurement model of perseverative cognitions.

Daily Levels and Dynamic Metrics of Affective-Cognitive Constructs Associate With Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours in Adults After Psychiatric Hospitalization.

The period after psychiatric hospitalization is an extraordinarily high-risk period for suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STBs). Affective-cognitive constructs (ACCs) are salient risk factors for STBs, and intensive longitudinal metrics of these constructs may improve personalized risk detection and intervention. However, limited research has examined how within-person daily levels and between-person dynamic metrics of ACCs relate to STBs after hospital discharge. Adult psychiatric inpatients (N = 95) completed a 65-day ecological momentary assessment protocol after discharge as part of a 6-mo

Slow and Powerless Thought Dynamic Relates to Brooding in Unipolar and Bipolar Depression.

INTRODUCTION: Depression can be characterized by rumination that is featured by spontaneity and perseveration of internally oriented thoughts. At the same time, depressed subjects complain about abnormal slowness and lack of power/energy in their thoughts, suggesting abnormal "thought dynamics." The relationship between rumination and thought dynamics in depression remains unclear, though. METHOD: We investigated thought dynamics and rumination in healthy control, major depressive disorder (MDD), and depressed bipolar disorder (BD) subjects. The dynamics in the spontaneous shift between inter

Interpretation training to target repetitive negative thinking in generalized anxiety disorder and depression.

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) for example, worry in generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and rumination in depression, is often targeted during psychological treatments. To test the hypothesis that negative interpretation bias contributes to worry and rumination, we assessed the effects of inducing more positive interpretations in reducing RNT. METHOD: Volunteers diagnosed with GAD (66) or depression (65) were randomly allocated to one of two versions of cognitive bias modification for interpretation (CBM-I), either with or without RNT priming prior to training, or a control con

The immediate and delayed cardiovascular benefits of forgiving.

BACKGROUND: The putative health benefits of forgiveness may include long-term buffering against cardiovascular reactivity associated with rumination. Although studies show short-term benefits of adopting a forgiving perspective, it is uncertain whether this perspective protects against repeated future rumination on offenses, which may be necessary for long-term health benefits. Also unclear is whether forgiveness offers unique benefits beyond simple distraction. METHODS: Cardiovascular parameters (systolic blood pressure [SBP], diastolic blood pressure [DBP], and heart rate) were measured whi

Covid-19-related ruminations: A qualitative study based on the perspectives of the cancer survivors.

Cancer survivors can develop repetitive ruminations due to the unexpected and challenging effects of Covid-19. This qualitative descriptive design study aimed to comprehend the Covid-19-related ruminations from the subjective perspective of cancer survivors (n = 33), accessed via online Facebook self-help groups of a cancer association. A semi-structured interview guide was used for data collection followed by systematic analysis. Based on the descriptive analysis of the data, three main themes emerged-"Welcome to my life," "Cancer versus Covid-19," and "Fight versus lose"-based on cancer surv

Course and stability of cognitive and metacognitive beliefs in depression.

Maladaptive cognitive beliefs as measured by the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS) increase vulnerability to depression. Maladaptive metacognitive beliefs as measured by the Metacognitive Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30) are also thought to contribute to depression. However, the long-term stability of metacognitive beliefs in depression has not yet been investigated. It is unclear whether metacognitive beliefs can add explanatory power to depression above and beyond maladaptive cognitive beliefs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role and stability of cognitive and metacognitive m

The role of anger rumination and autism spectrum disorder-linked perseveration in the experience of aggression in the general population.

This study (a) examined the role of anger rumination as a mediator of the relation between social anxiety and the experience of anger, hostility, and aggression, in the general population, and (b) evaluated the degree to which the presence of autism spectrum disorder characteristics moderates the indirect influence of anger rumination. We then explored whether social cognition and perseveration characteristic of autism spectrum disorder uniquely accounted for the predicted moderation. In this survey study of young adults (n = 948), anger rumination mediated the relation between social anxiety

Exploration of Nonsuicidal Self-Injury as an Addiction-Like Behaviour in Depressed Adolescents in the light of the I-PACE Model.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is increasingly conceptualized as an addiction-like behaviour characterized by dysregulated emotional and cognitive processes. Guided by the I-PACE model, this study investigated how person-level vulnerabilities interact with affective, mental and executive functioning to maintain NSSI in clinically depressed adolescents (N = 167, aged 12-18, M = 15.37 ± 1.75 years). Results revealed strong addiction-like patterns. Childhood trauma, depression and rumination demonstrated significant associations with NSSI frequency (r = 0.59-0.61), while resilience and self-estee

[Better Sleep and Less Pain? Sleep Training in Orthopedic Rehabilitation].

PURPOSE: There is high comorbidity between chronic pain and insomnia. Not only does chronic pain impair sleep, poor sleep quality can also exacerbate the sensation of pain. However, usually, the respective symptoms are treated separately. We evaluate a new cognitive behavioral sleep-pain-training aiming at improving symptoms of both insomnia and chronic pain in the setting of ambulant orthopedic rehabilitation. METHODS: N=41 patients participated in the study (with 15 participants being enrolled in the control group). The training consists of 4 modules á 90min and was explicitly developed for

Cognitive and Behavioral Contributions to Depression Severity, Quality of Life, and Functioning Among People Living With HIV in South Africa.

Cognitive-behavioral treatments for depression typically address both behavioral (e.g., activation) and cognitive (e.g., rumination) components, and consequently improve quality of life (QOL) and function in high-resource settings. However, little is known about the cross-cultural applicability and relative contribution of these components to depression symptom severity, QOL, and functional impairment in South Africa and other resource-limited global settings with high HIV prevalence rates. Persons with HIV (N = 274) from a peri-urban community outside Cape Town, South Africa, were administere

Difficulty in updating positive beliefs about negative cognition is associated with increased depressed mood.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Depressed people hold positive beliefs about negative cognition (e.g., rumination is useful to find a solution), which may motivate those individuals to engage in sustained negative thinking. However, in reality, rumination often leads to unfavorable outcomes. Thus, such beliefs create a large discrepancy between one's expectations and the actual outcome. Therefore, we hypothesized that this prediction error would be associated with increased depressed mood. METHODS: We observed how people update their positive beliefs about negative cognition within a volatile envi

Unravelling the impact of prior depression and trauma-related cognitive processes on depression following trauma: A 2-year prospective study of burn survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with severe burn injuries may develop depression, yet knowledge about psychological risk factors for depression following trauma is limited. This study investigated the prospective impact and interplay of prior depression and trauma-related cognitive processes (posttraumatic negative appraisals and trauma-related rumination) to depressive symptoms between 6 and 24 months after burn injury. METHOD: Taiwanese adult survivors of burn (N = 118) participated in surveys immediately post-burn and at 6-, 12-, and 24-months follow-up. Participants were 7 5% men, with an average

The Influence of Cognitive Appraisals on the Association between Callous-Unemotional Traits and Conduct Problems during Middle Childhood.

Existing research on callous-unemotional (CU) traits and conduct problems primarily focuses on the concurrent or unidirectional associations between these constructs (i.e., from CU traits to CP), with less attention given to their dynamic interplay during middle childhood. It is possible that socialization agents, such as peers, play a significant role in shaping the dynamic relation between CU traits and conduct problems early in development. Additionally, prior studies have shown that both CU traits and conduct problems are associated with poorer peer functioning. Considering the social info

The impact of cognitive emotion regulation strategies on math and science anxieties with or without controlling general anxiety.

It is well-established that general anxiety associates with the lower use of adaptive emotion regulation and the higher use of maladaptive emotion regulation. However, no study has previously investigated the impact of cognitive emotion regulation on academic anxieties. Using a sample of secondary school students (N = 391), this study examined the impact of cognitive emotion regulation on math and science anxieties. Math anxiety showed stronger correlations with adaptive than maladaptive emotion regulation, whereas general anxiety showed stronger correlations with maladaptive than adaptive emo

Emotion Regulation and Mental Health among Men with Childhood Sexual Abuse Histories.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is a form of child maltreatment which has been increasingly recognized as a common experience among men. Research on male CSA remains under-developed but suggests many negative mental health impacts. The current study examined the link between mental health outcomes and different emotion regulation strategies among 69 adult men. Men completed measures on their current mental well-being, and participated in a clinical interview about emotion regulation strategies used to manage memories about their sexual victimization. Results indicated that the most frequently use

Understanding vulnerability for depression from a cognitive neuroscience perspective: A reappraisal of attentional factors and a new conceptual framework.

We propose a framework to understand increases in vulnerability for depression after recurrent episodes that links attention processes and schema activation to negative mood states, by integrating cognitive and neurobiological findings. Depression is characterized by a mood-congruent attentional bias at later stages of information processing. The basic idea of our framework is that decreased activity in prefrontal areas, mediated by the serotonin metabolism which the HPA axis controls, is associated with an impaired attenuation of subcortical regions, resulting in prolonged activation of the a

Multi-ethnic variation in the ties that bind rumination and heart rate variability: Implications for health disparities.

Higher self-reported rumination, a common form of trait perseverative cognition, is linked with lower resting heart rate variability (HRV), which indicates poorer cardiac function and greater disease risk. A meta-analysis and systematic review indicated that in samples with fewer European Americans, the association of rumination with both heart rate and blood pressure was stronger. Thus, trait rumination may be more strongly associated with resting HRV among ethnically minoritized populations. The current study investigated whether differences in the association of self-reported rumination wit
