Although rare, biceps and triceps tendon ruptures constitute significant injuries that can lead to profound disability if left untreated, especially in the athletic population. Biceps rupture is more common than triceps rupture, with both resulting from a forceful eccentric load. Surgical repair is the treatment method of choice for tendinous ruptures in athletes. Nonoperative management is rarely indicated in this population and is typically reserved for individuals with partial ruptures that quickly regain strength and function. Surgical anatomy, evaluation, diagnosis, and surgical managemen…

Primary ovarian ectopic pregnancy is a rare entity and is associated with rupture very early in the gestation. We present a case of ovarian pregnancy in a primi gravida, which ruptured relatively late in the first trimester. The patient did not have any predisposing factors for ovarian pregnancy. The case was managed laparoscopically, and the diagnosis was based on surgical and histopathological findings.

Molar pregnancies in most instances develop within the uterine cavity, but may occur at any site. Ectopic molar pregnancy is a rare event. The objective of this study was to present a case of ruptured tubal molar gestation, discuss its clinical features and ways to improve diagnostic accuracy. A 35-year-old woman presented with features suggestive of ruptured tubal ectopic pregnancy. There was neither any evidence at the time of presentation to suspect a molar gestation, nor β human chorionic gonadotrophin (βhCG) hormone estimation was done, but only a clearview pregnancy test was carried out.…

After developing sudden severe chest pain, an 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency room with chest pain and palpitations and was unabl … ng. The patient went to surgery immediately with BP control. He died prior to surgery due to aortic rupture. Here we present this rare case of aortic dissection type B with rupture, reported in an 11-year-old Korean child.

OBJECTIVE: Ruptured ectopic gestation is a life threatening medical emergency especially in developing countries. However, the occurrence of hydatidiform mole in ruptured tubal pregnancy is uncommon.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A consecutive analysis of patients with hydatidiform mole in ruptured tubal gestation over a 9-year period in a tertiary hospital.
RESULTS: Of a total of 101 females with ectopic gestations, only five had ruptured tubal hydatidiform mole. The ages ranged from 20-37years and they all presented with acute abdominal symptoms which necessitated emergency surgical intervention. …

Not much more than a century ago, a ruptured ectopic pregnancy was a death sentence. In 1876, John Parry wrote in his book on this subject: 'Here is a wife in the most useful period of her existence, which good authorities have said is never cured; and for which, even in this age when science and art boast of such high attainments, no remedy, either medical or surgical, has been tried with a single success'. When we read that eminent authorities were advising the use of electric shocks, injection of narcotics into the sac and copious and frequent bleeding, one is hardly suprised. Parry himself…

Rupture of the bladder in the neonatal period followed by urinary ascites is rare and usually the result of umbilical artery catheterization. Patients may present with abdominal distension, oliguria or anuria, and signs of renal insufficiency. We present a case of urinary ascites in a premature neonate due to a spontaneous rupture of the bladder, and we discuss the pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of this case.

OBJECTIVE: To educate sports medicine practitioners as to length of time for an athlete to return to activity after sustaining a rupture of the plantar fascia.
METHODS: Athletic patients sustaining plantar fascia ruptures and subsequent treatment were reviewed. Diagnosis was based on clinical findings, although radiographic studies were done. Patients were treated for 2 to 3 weeks with a below-knee or high-top boot, nonweightbearing, with an additional 2 to 3 weeks of weightbearing in the boot. Patients used physical therapy.
RESULTS: Eighteen athletes, including 6 elite athletes, were evalu…

We rarely encounter isolated ruptures of the supraspinatus muscle. At the Clinic of Orthopedics at the Faculty Hospital in Olomouc, we encountered only 21 cases out of 385 arthroscopic operation cases from October 1998 to October 2003. The patients were examined by USG, 5 patients were examined arthrographically and 3 patients underwent MRI examination. Of these 21 patients, only 3 were operated for acute post-injury haemarthrosis of the shoulder joint. During arthroscopic operation, an isolated rupture of the supraspinatus muscle was discovered in all these patients. The remaining 40 patients…

OBJECTIVE: Ruptures of the tracheobronchial tree present a life-threatening situation. Nevertheless, therapy is still controversial. Though conservative treatment by antibiotics and intubation with the cuff inflated distal to the tear is favored by some authors, surgical repair is unavoidable in many cases.
METHODS: We present a series of 31 patients (mean age 43.6 years, range 8--72 years) with iatrogenous or post-traumatic tracheobronchial ruptures treated since 1975. Fifteen ruptures were longitudinal tears of the trachea, not extending lower than a distance of 3 cm from the bifurcation, 1…

AIMS: Spontaneous rupture of the oesophagus (SRO) is a rare and often fatal event. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presentation, management and outcome of SRO in a single unit. METHODS: Data were collected on all patients presenting with SRO over a 5-year period with respect to presenting features, diagnostic investigations and subsequent management. Statistical analysis was by Student's t test, chi2 and Fisher's exact tests. RESULTS: Fourteen patients were identified, 12 men and two women with a median age of 64 (range 18-78) years; eight were tertiary referrals. Thirteen of 14 pati…

The authors present the results of a retrospective study concerning 96 patients with an abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture who underwent surgery in the 2nd Department of Surgery in Brno in the time period from 1989 to 1999. In 30 cases (31.2%) there was an isolated retroperitoneal rupture, 66 patients (68.8%) also had haemoperitoneum. The mean age of the patients was 74 years and the male/female ratio was 76 (79.2%): 20 (20.8%). Twelve patients (40%) did not survive the retroperitoneal rupture, and 34 patients (51.5%) did not survive the intraabdominal rupture. Total mortality in the study grou…

The historical opinion that the intima layer of a ruptured artery of muscular type could stop bleeding by "rolling in" should be controlled experimentally. Five segments of human femoral/popliteal artery (3-4 cm long) were overstretched until complete rupture occurred. Furthermore a longitudinally split and a partially oblique incised segment were ruptured. As morphological finding a sandclock deformity was observed in the region of rupture. This phenomenon was induced by adventitia layer, which closed the ends of ruptured media layer like a Chinese finger trap. In the longitudinally split seg…

Intradural dermoids are rare congenital tumors representing approximately 0.05% of all intracranial lesions. These benign tumors have a typical appearance on CT and MR due to their lipid components. The complication caused by rupture are the spillage of the fatty material into the cerebrospinal fluid. We report a case of a ruptured dermoid cyst showing fat/fluid levels in both side ventricles and fatty material in the subarachnoid space on CT and MR-imaging and the follow-up over four years after incomplete resection of the tumor.

Popliteal artery aneurysms rarely rupture. We treated a 91-year-old man who presented with a deep venous thrombosis and anemia; rupture of a popliteal artery aneurysm was suspected only after compartment syndrome isolated to the thigh developed as the result of bleeding. Although fasciotomy was required on the basis of the clinical examination alone, the cause of the problem, operative strategy, and definitive treatment (i.e., resection and bypass) were clarified by the preoperative computed tomography scan. Ruptured popliteal aneurysm can manifest as a massively swollen leg with anemia and sh…

We did a retrospective study in 12 patients with iatrogenic tracheal or tracheobronchial ruptures treated since 1975. Ten female subjects, one male subject, and one child (age range, 8 to 72 years), all of whom had undergone intratracheal intubation, were admitted to the hospital. Four patients had been intubated with a double-lumen catheter (two Carlens type with carinal spur, two Robertshaw without spur), and seven had had "high volume-low pressure" tubes, placed under emergency conditions in three of those seven cases. In one further case, an unsuccessful attempt of percutaneous tracheostom…
