Effective and cost-effective strategies for recruiting rural adults into a civic engagement and health behavior change research study.

BACKGROUND: Rural populations have worse health outcomes than urban populations. Community-based health interventions can help to improve these outcomes, but rural populations are underrepresented in research. The goals of the study were to describe and examine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of strategies to recruit into a rural, community-based health intervention study. METHODS: The Change Club study is a community-based health intervention conducted in medically underserved rural communities in Texas and New York to assess whether a civic engagement program improves health among

Perceptions and public health risks of the bat-human interface in households from fragmented rural landscapes in southern Chile.

Land-use change and habitat fragmentation in southern Chile have favored synanthropic bat species, promoting their contact with domestic animals and humans, representing a potential risk of exposure. This study aimed to characterize dwellings with bat colonies in rural zones of the Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions, estimate the frequency of human-bat contact, and determine the health risk perception from residents. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in 69 rural dwellings. A structured survey was used to gather information on demographics, household characteristics, frequency of co

Is labor force participation detrimental to the mental health of rural older adults? The mediating role of attitudes toward aging.

BACKGROUND: Population aging is a significant global issue. In China, the widening urban-rural disparity in population aging has contributed to problems such as the hollowing out of rural areas and a decline in the labor force. This situation, in turn, has subjected older adults in rural areas to significant psychological pressure. Thus their mental health has been widely emphasized. This study is dedicated to analyzing the linkages between mental health, attitudes toward aging, and their labor force participation among rural Chinese older adults in order to promote the construction of an age-

Effectiveness of a self-care intervention addressing social determinants of health in reducing cardiovascular disease risk in rural populations.

PURPOSE: HeartHealth is a multi-component cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction intervention developed for rural Appalachia participants. Its effectiveness in reducing CVD risk factors has been demonstrated, and although HeartHealth was developed to address the negative impact of social determinants of health (SDOH), it remains unclear whether its impact is modified by key SDOH. The aims of the study were to evaluate whether the intervention effect on the Framingham CVD Risk Score (FRS) differs by financial status, education level, sex, depressive symptoms, and health literacy. METHODS:

Overlooked and Underserved: A Scoping Review of Social and Mental Health Outcomes Following Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Programming in Rural Dwellers.

Non-communicable chronic diseases, including cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases, are highly prevalent in rural areas. This population is also more susceptible to loneliness and social isolation. Rehabilitation programs are an essential component for the management of cardiopulmonary diseases and have been shown to improve several outcomes (i.e. cardiovascular health, symptom burden, and quality of life). These programs may also play a role in social health. The aim of this review is to explore the state of knowledge surrounding cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs, loneliness, and social

Correlations Between TyG-Related Indices and Bone Health: A Cross-Sectional Study of Osteoporosis in a Rural Chinese Population.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis (OP) is a major metabolic bone disease with significant health and socioeconomic impacts. The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and its derivatives, which reflect insulin resistance (IR), may play a role in bone metabolism. However, the relationship between TyG indices and OP is unclear. This study aimed to explore the association between TyG indices and OP in a low-income rural Chinese population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in rural Tianjin, China, in 2020. Participants aged 60 years or older were included. Data were collected through interviews

Continuous decline in Paget's disease of bone: a One Health perspective on 2342 new diagnoses and their association with rural livestock.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize the incidence of clinically diagnosed Paget's disease of bone (PDB) in Castille and Leon, a region in the central plateau of Spain, from 2009 to 2019, and explores its association with environmental factors, particularly livestock activity. METHODS: We analysed primary care electronic medical records to assess PDB incidence trends over time and geographic differences across counties. An ecological study was conducted to explore associations between livestock density and PDB incidence in different regions. RESULTS: A total of 2342 new cases of PDB were identified,

Erector Spinae Plane Block for Providing Labor Analgesia in a Rural Health Care Setting in India: A Case Series.

The practice of labor analgesia is highly variable in India. Parturients are often prescribed mild opioids (tramadol and pethidine). Erector spinae plane blocks can provide widespread analgesia covering multiple dermatomes. After a process evaluation to introduce safe and effective labor analgesia mandated due to poor efficacy of the standard care, erector spinae plane analgesia was offered to nulliparous parturients. The procedure was performed under ultrasound guidance at the lumbar L4 level in 10 patients. Outcomes included pain scores. There was a major reduction in labor pain. Erector spi

The impact of facilitators and rural immersion on medical student engagement during a child and adolescent mental health videoconference workshop.

OBJECTIVE: Child and adolescent mental health (CAMH) disorders are a major public health problem in Australia, especially outside metropolitan areas. The issue is compounded by a shortage of child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs). CAMH receives minimal coverage in health professional training, training opportunities are scarce, and support for generalist health professionals, who treat most cases, is lacking. Novel approaches to early medical education and teaching are required to strengthen the available skilled workforce in rural and remote settings. METHOD: This qualitative study explor
