Electrospun polyvinyl alcohol nanofiber scaffolds incorporated strontium-substituted hydroxyapatite from sand lobster shells: synthesis, characterization, and in vitro biological properties.

The paper describes the synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and strontium-substituted hydroxyapatite (SrHAp) from sand lobster shells by a hydrothermal method. The HAp and SrHAp were incorporated into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber scaffold through the eletrospinning method. The scaffolds were incorporated with 5wt% of hydroxyapatite (HAp), 5wt%, 10wt%, and 15% of SrHAp. The physicochemical, mechanical, and in vitro biological properties of the scaffold were evaluated. The incorporation of HAp or SrHAp was evidenced by the diffraction patterns and the phosphate functional groups related t…

Simultaneous Oxidation of Trace Organics and Sorption of Trace Metals by Ferrate (Fe(VI))-Coated Sand in Synthetic Wastewater Effluent.

The increased presence of toxic chemicals in aquatic matrices and their associated health effects raise the need for more effective treatment technologies. The application of Fe(VI), an advanced oxidation treatment agent with disinfecting and coagulating capabilities, is limited by Fe(VI) aqueous instability. Our previous study proposed an Fe(VI)-coated sand media to overcome this constraint and demonstrated that Fe(VI)-coated sand was an effective medium for the treatment of phenolic compounds. In this study, we assessed the potential of the media for treatment of acetaminophen (ACM), benzotr…

Porous scaffold hydroxyapatite from sand lobster shells (Panulirus homarus) using polyethylene oxide/chitosan as polymeric porogen for bone tissue engineering.

The hydroxyapatite (HAp; Ca10 (PO4 )6 (OH)2 )) has good biocompatibility, bioactivity, and osteoconductivity as a bone implant because the main inorganic mineral of human bone is HAp. The use of scaffold HAp from biogenic resources that contain high calcium and polymer as a pore forming agent to support bone growth is a longstanding area of interest. In this study, porous scaffolds based on HAp were synthesized from sand lobster (SL; Panulirus homarus) shells as a source of calcium using the porogen leaching method with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and chitosan (Chs) as polymeric porogen. The pres…

Sand fly fauna and molecular detection of Leishmania species and blood meal sources in different rural environments in western Amazon.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a disease caused by Leishmania species and transmitted by the bites of infected female sand fly species. The diversity of these insects in Rondônia State (where CL is the predominant form) is large but unexplored, and consequently the vector species are unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sand fly fauna in two environments (forest fragment and peridomicile) in rural areas of four municipalities of the state, DNA amplification of Leishmania species and the presence of blood meal sources for these insects. After identifying the species, sample c…

Application of sand particles modified with NH2-MIL-101(Fe) as an efficient visible-light photocatalyst for Cr(VI) reduction.

This study presented chemical immobilization of an iron(III)-based metal-organic framework [NH2-MIL-101(Fe)] on the surface of sand particles and its application for Cr(VI) photocatalytic reduction using visible light. The surface of sand particles was functionalized with (3-chloropropyl)trimethoxy silane to provide the active sites for bond formation with MOF particles. Using a heat treatment step, MOF particles were bonded on the surface of sand particles, thereby providing a photocatalyst more applicable in real environments. The presence of amino-functional groups in MOF was influential in…

Ecology of sand flies in a low-density residential rural area, with mixed forest/agricultural exploitation, in north-eastern Brazil.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania braziliensis is endemic in Brazil, where Lutzomyia whitmani is the most important vector involved in the transmission to humans, particularly in the peridomestic environment. Herein, we assessed the ecology of sand flies, including Lu. whitmani, in a low-density residential rural area with mixed forest/agricultural exploitation in north-eastern Brazil, where cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic. Particularly, we hypothesized that sand fly abundance was correlated with climatic variables. Sand fly collections were carried out monthly from August 2013 t…

Peridomiciliary breeding sites of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in an endemic area of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in southeastern Brazil.

The occurrence of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in areas modified by humans indicates that phlebotomine sand fly vectors breed close to human habitations. Potential peridomiciliary breeding sites of phlebotomines were sampled in an area of transmission of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis in Southeastern Brazil. Three concentric circles rounding houses and domestic animal shelters, with radii of 20, 40, and 60 m, defined the area to be monitored using adult emergence traps. Of the 67 phlebotomines collected, Lutzomyia intermedia comprised 71.6%; Lutzomyia schreiberi, 20.9%; and Lutzom…

Sand fly salivary proteins induce strong cellular immunity in a natural reservoir of visceral leishmaniasis with adverse consequences for Leishmania.

Immunity to a sand fly salivary protein protects against visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in hamsters. This protection was associated with the development of cellular immunity in the form of a delayed-type hypersensitivity response and the presence of IFN-gamma at the site of sand fly bites. To date, there are no data available regarding the cellular immune response to sand fly saliva in dogs, the main reservoirs of VL in Latin America, and its role in protection from this fatal disease. Two of 35 salivary proteins from the vector sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis, identified using a novel approach te…
