Dissociating medial frontal and posterior cingulate activity during self-reflection.

Motivationally significant agendas guide perception, thought and behaviour, helping one to define a 'self' and to regulate interactions with the environment. To investigate neural correlates of thinking about such agendas, we asked participants to think about their hopes and aspirations (promotion focus) or their duties and obligations (prevention focus) during functional magnetic resonance imaging and compared these self-reflection conditions with a distraction condition in which participants thought about non-self-relevant items. Self-reflection resulted in greater activity than distraction

Egocentrism, allocentrism, and Asperger syndrome.

In this paper, we attempt to make a distinction between egocentrism and allocentrism in social cognition, based on the distinction that is made in visuo-spatial perception. We propose that it makes a difference to mentalizing whether the other person can be understood using an egocentric ("you") or an allocentric ("he/she/they") stance. Within an egocentric stance, the other person is represented in relation to the self. By contrast, within an allocentric stance, the existence or mental state of the other person needs to be represented as independent from the self. We suggest here that people

Self-serving judgments about winning the lottery.

Although myths and stereotypes about lottery winners tend to be negative (e.g., winners become extravagant), people continue to spend billions of dollars buying lottery tickets in the hope of winning. The authors applied findings from the self-enhancement literature to understand this paradox. Eighty college students received class credit for their participation, in which they read a scenario that asked them to imagine that they, or a target other, had won a lottery. Participants' responses to a 34-item questionnaire displayed a self-serving bias, such that changes to the self were expected to

Contingencies of self-worth.

Research on self-esteem has focused almost exclusively on level of trait self-esteem to the neglect of other potentially more important aspects such as the contingencies on which self-esteem is based. Over a century ago, W. James (1890) argued that self-esteem rises and falls around its typical level in response to successes and failures in domains on which one has staked self-worth. We present a model of global self-esteem that builds on James' insights and emphasizes contingencies of self-worth. This model can help to (a) point the way to understanding how self-esteem is implicated in affect

[The melancholy Spaniard: notes for the interpretation of a stereotype].

Included in the traditional typology of nations, the image of the melancholy Spaniard is a cultural stereotype which appears with a remarkable continuity since the Spanish Golden Age. Developed by foreigners--particularly by the French--this stereotype is also adopted by the Spaniards themselves. It is then necessary to inquire about the persistance of this stereotype through-out the centuries and to examine how--and why--the Spaniards did adhere to the image given by foreigners and the typology of nations. The examination of this stereotype aims at analyzing its mechanism, at discovering its

Hand preference in a population of Swedish college students.

A hand preference inventory was administered to a population of 921 Swedish college students. The questions concern writing, drawing, throwing a ball, cutting with scissors, tooth brushing, cutting with a knife, and using a hammer, each with five response alternatives: always right, mostly right, either hand, mostly left and always left. A consistent preference over all activities for the left hand was rare (4%), but common for the right hand (62%). Corresponding percentages for writing hand were 9% and 89%, thus contradicting recent reports of a dramatic increase of left-handedness. There wer

. . . And some men have leadership thrust upon them.

Viewing leadership behavior as a joint function of situational factors, individual predispositions, and followers' responsive behavior, this study used 64 subjects, half of them high and half of them low in measured leadership self-concept. Half had a high and half a low stake in a group task. Each subject was twice appointed leader of a three-man group, once exposed to "followers" (experimenter's condederates,) altercasting him to lead, once to followers alter-casting him to follow. Multivariate analyses of variance showed effects of followers' behavior on profiles of a subject's behavior (wh

Adolescents and Young Adults With Spina Bifida Transitioning to Adulthood: A Comprehensive Community-Based Needs Assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Developing effective interventions to promote successful transition to adulthood for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with spina bifida (SB) requires input from SB community stakeholders, particularly AYA themselves. The goal of this study was to identify and prioritize facilitators and barriers of successful transition to a healthy adult life for AYA with SB. METHODS: We utilized concept mapping, a community-engaged research methodology. We recruited a purposeful sample of SB community stakeholders: AYA with SB, parents/caregivers, pediatric and adult health care providers, and

A Comparison of Affective-Cognitive States in Daily Life Between Emerging Adults With and Without Past-Year Nonsuicidal Self-Injury.

Although the literature suggests trait-like differences in affective and cognitive vulnerabilities between individuals with and without a history of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), little is known about how these dispositional differences are experienced in the natural environment. The present study compares the intensity, inertia, interaction, and variability of affective (negative and positive affect) and cognitive states (rumination, self-criticism) in the everyday lives of individuals who do and do not engage in NSSI. Using experience sampling methodology (ESM), 60 emerging adults (ages =

Preschoolers' emotion knowledge and the differential effects of harsh punishment.

This study examined the influence of caregiver-reported harsh physical and verbal punishment on children's behavioral and self-system adjustment. Children's emotion knowledge was evaluated as a heretofore unrecognized moderator of these relations. We assessed 250 preschool-aged children (50% female; Mage = 49.06 months) from diverse backgrounds (50% Hispanic, 18% African American, 10.4% Caucasian, 21.6% multiracial/other) using various instruments through teacher, caregiver, self, and observer report in the domains of harsh punishment, conduct problems, self-concept, and emotion knowledge. Development of Gender Non-Contentedness During Adolescence and Early Adulthood.

Adolescence is an important period for the development of gender identity. We studied the development of gender non-contentedness, i.e., unhappiness with being the gender aligned with one's sex, from early adolescence to young adulthood, and its association with self-concept, behavioral and emotional problems, and adult sexual orientation. Participants were 2772 adolescents (53% male) from the Tracking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey population and clinical cohort. Data from six waves were included (ages 11-26). Gender non-contentedness was assessed with the item "I wish to be of the oppo

Under pressure: Socially prescribed perfectionism, social evaluation, and stress in middle and late adolescence.

Adolescence is a developmental period characterized by stressful life transitions and changes in social environments. Research indicates that socially prescribed perfectionism is a mental health risk factor. This study examines the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism, daily stress, and acute social stress in middle and late adolescence, drawing developmental comparisons between these stages. We also explore social processing factors that help explain the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and stress. Finally, we examine self-oriented perfectionism to see

My name is, who? On being misnamed by a relative or a romantic partner.

The present survey investigated how people felt (i.e., irritated, sad or amused) when a relative or a romantic partner called them by someone else's first name. It also explored links between these reactions, self-esteem, the own name's symbolic value and one's own propensity to misnaming others. Participants reported more misnaming incidents committed by a relative than by a partner. Moreover, they were significantly more irritated when a partner misnamed them than when a relative did so. Globally, naming incidents did not trigger very strong negative feelings but participants reported correc

Voice, body-self and trauma in the analytic space.

The author investigates voice and body-self in the analytic space. A look at the role of music and voice in Stone Age ritual, being the core of human culture, and at the role of the mother's voice, being the unborn child's first encounter with the Other, shows the influence of the voice on psychic life. Beyond the symbolic discourse, voice and body-self organize the exchange of emotions. This level becomes crucial when a symbolization disorder dominates the encounter as a result of traumatization. The analytic couple is not limited to a focus on words and images. Both analyst and patient have
