BACKGROUND: In 2006, the Senegalese National Malaria Control Programme recommended artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) as the first-line treatment for uncomplicated malaria. Since the introduction of ACT, there have been very few reports on the level of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to anti-malarial drugs. An ex vivo susceptibility study was conducted on local isolates obtained from the Hôpital Principal de Dakar (Dakar, Senegal) from November 2013 to January 2014.
METHODS: Eighteen P. falciparum isolates were sussessfully assessed for ex vivo susceptibility to chloroquine (CQ), qu…

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted strict measures and rapid vaccine deployment in Benin and Senegal. This longitudinal study uses Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) to analyze the evolution of vaccination intent and its determinants, focusing on attitudes, risk perceptions, and social influence. This descriptive and analytical longitudinal study included 546 Beninese and 319 Senegalese individuals aged 18 and above, selected using marginal quotas. Data were collected via Random Digit Dialing (RDD) based on a questionnaire informed by the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Health Belief …

This paper investigates linkage to care following community-based screening for hepatitis B virus (HBV) in rural Senegal. HBV-positive participants who completed a biological and clinical examination to assess liver disease and treatment eligibility were referred to a regional hospital (if eligible for treatment), invited to join the Sen-B research cohort study (adults with detectable viral load) or referred to their local health centre (all others). Logistic regressions were conducted to investigate factors associated with (i) uptake of the scheduled post-screening examination, and (ii) HBV m…

INTRODUCTION: Bart's syndrome is an uncommon inherited congenital disorder associating congenital cutaneous aplasia of the extremities and inherited epidermolysis bullosa. Bilateral and symmetrical involvement of the limbs is exceptionally described on black skin. In most cases, the diagnosis is clinical; however, the management remains very difficult and the extended forms are a real therapeutic challenge. We report 2 cases of Bart's syndrome observed in a sub-Saharan African country (Senegal, Dakar).

Nearly half the world's population burns solid fuel for cooking, heating, and lighting. The incomplete combustion of these fuels is associated with detrimental health and environmental effects. The design and distribution of improved cookstoves that increase combustion efficiency and reduce indoor air pollution are a global priority. However, promoting exclusive and sustainable use of the improved stoves has proved challenging. In 2012, we conducted a survey in a community in rural Senegal to describe stove ownership and preferences for different stove technologies. This report aims to describ…

BACKGROUND: In south-eastern Senegal, malaria and onchocerciasis are co-endemic. Onchocerciasis in this region has been controlled by once or twice yearly mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin (IVM) for over fifteen years. Since laboratory-raised Anopheles gambiae s.s. are susceptible to ivermectin at concentrations found in human blood post-ingestion of IVM, it is plausible that a similar effect could be quantified in the field, and that IVM might have benefits as a malaria control tool.
METHODS: In 2008 and 2009, wild-caught blood fed An. gambiae s.l. mosquitoes were collected from…

INTRODUCTION: Community-based health insurance (CBHI) schemes have been widely promoted to improve financial protection and expand access to healthcare in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly among populations working in the informal sector who lack access to formal health insurance. In Sub-Saharan Africa, CBHI has been implemented as part of broader efforts to advance universal health coverage (UHC), yet enrolment often remains low. In Senegal, CBHI schemes aim to expand insurance coverage among informal sector populations, but participation remains limited and uneven across…

Beyond its socio-economic impact, COVID-19 has been associated with respiratory, gastrointestinal, neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms across many countries, including in Senegal. While the SARS-CoV-2 virus primarily targets the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, if not detected and treated early, it can invade the nervous system and lead to severe neurological complications. This study focuses on the molecular and serological characterization of the SARS-CoV-2 strains associated with encephalitis manifestations of the disease. The presence of the virus in the central nervous syste…

Artemisinin Combination Therapies (ACT) stand as the most potent antimalarial treatments. In response to the emergence of ACT-resistant malaria parasites in Southeast Asia, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended continuous monitoring of the effectiveness of ACT and other antimalarials. To address this need, we collected dried blood spots from malaria patients during a 42-days drug efficacy trial evaluating the efficacy of Artesunate plus Amodiaquine (ASAQ), Artemether Plus Lumefantrine (AL) and Dihydroarthemisinine plus Piperaquine (DHAPQ) on simple P. falciparum malaria in 2017.
