[Features of indoleamine metabolism in adolescent girls with delayed sexual development].

Indolamine metabolism was studied in 203 patients with retarded sexual development of different genesis and in 116 girls of the same age. Considerable disorders in the level of serotonin and the products of its metabolism: 5-oxy-indoleacetic acid and melatonin, a hormone synthesized by the pineal gland--were found in abnormal sexual maturation. The nature of revealed changes depended, to a large extent, on genesis of disease which could be used for differential diagnosis of different forms of retarded sexual development. Possible involvement of indolamines in pathogenetic mechanisms ensuring t…

Going through the rites of passage: timing and transition of menarche, childhood sexual abuse, and anxiety symptoms in girls.

Menarche is a discrete, transitional event that holds considerable personal, social, biological, and developmental significance. The present longitudinal study examined both the transition and timing of menarche on the trajectory of anxiety in girls with histories of childhood maltreatment (N = 93; 63% European American, 14% multiracial, 10% Latino, 9% African American, and 4% Native American). We hypothesized that because menarche is a novel, unfamiliar experience, girls would show greater anxiety around the time of menarche. The anxiety-provoking nature of menarche may be accentuated among e

Anorexia, masochism, self-mutilation, and autoerotism: the spider mother.

In summary, both self-mutilators and eating-disordered individuals come from dysfunctional homes with a very controlling mother and usually absent father. They often have a history of trauma. They are depressed and obsessive, attached to their mothers, who discourage attempts at emancipation. The symptoms serve the purpose of keeping them as little girls with negative feelings toward menstruation, sexual maturity, development, and femininity in general. These symptoms comprise self-destructive behavior in the service of removing sexual thoughts, temptation, and activities. Favazza (1987) inclu

Genetic hypogonadal (Gnrh1hpg) mouse model uncovers influence of reproductive axis on maturation of the gut microbiome during puberty.

The gut microbiome plays a key role in human health and gut dysbiosis is linked to many sex-specific diseases including autoimmune, metabolic, and neurological disorders. Activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis during puberty leads to sexual maturation and development of sex differences through the action of gonadal sex steroids. While the gut microbiome also undergoes sex differentiation, the mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Using a genetic hypogonadal (hpg) mouse model, we sampled the fecal microbiome of male and female wild-type and hpg mutant mice before an…

Aromatase inhibition in adolescence impairs sexual performance in adulthood without affecting anxiety-like behaviour in male rats.

Adolescence is a developmental period during which rising gonadal hormones drive the maturation of neural circuits underlying adult behaviour. Testosterone acts directly via androgen receptors (AR) or indirectly through aromatization to estradiol, yet the role of estradiol signalling in refining sexual behaviour during adolescence in male rats remains unclear. We tested whether inhibiting aromatase with fadrozole (FAD) from postnatal day 38 to 48 (around the time of puberty) affects adult sexual behaviour. To determine whether any deficits in sexual behaviour were secondary to anxiety-like beh

Ecologically-relevant exposure to methylmercury during early development does not affect adult phenotype in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).

Methylmercury causes behavioural and reproductive effects in adult mammals via early developmental exposure. Similar studies in birds are limited and mostly focussed on aquatic systems, but recent work has reported high blood mercury concentrations in terrestrial, passerine songbirds. We used the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) as a model to explore the long-term effects of early developmental exposure to methylmercury exposure. Chicks were dosed orally with either the vehicle control, 0.0315 µg Hg/g bw/day, or 0.075 µg Hg/g bw/day throughout the nestling period (days 1-21 post-hatching). We

The effects of early and late androgen treatments on the behavior of Sarotherodon mossambicus (Pisces: Cichlidae).

Groups of Sarotherodon mossambicus were treated with androgen by immersion or oral treatment at various stages of development. Fish were allowed to mature and the effects of treatment on gonadal and behavioral differentiation were examined. The effects of treatment on gonadal differentiation were assessed by determining the sex ratio for each group. Three treatments resulted in sex ratios significantly different from the 1:1 sex ratio obtained in untreated fish. Behavioral differences were detected between groups of males in three measures of territorial defense and aggression, and differences

Abstinence beliefs in early adolescence and sexual risk behavior two years later.

INTRODUCTION: The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate and sexually transmitted infection rates among developed countries. One common approach that has been implemented to reduce these rates is abstinence-only-until-marriage programs that advocate for delaying sexual intercourse until marriage. These programs focus on changing adolescents' beliefs toward abstinence until marriage; however, it is unclear whether adolescents' beliefs about abstinence predict their sexual behavior, including sexual risk behavior (SRB). An alternative approach may be encouraging youth to delay their s

Makorin 1 Regulates Developmental Timing in Drosophila.

The central mechanisms coordinating growth and sexual maturation are well conserved across invertebrates and vertebrates. Although mutations in the gene encoding makorin RING finger protein 3 (mkrn3 ) are associated with central precocious puberty in humans, a causal relationship has not been elucidated. Here, we examined the role of mkrn1, a Drosophila ortholog of mammalian makorin genes, in the regulation of developmental timing. Loss of MKRN1 in mkrn1 exS prolonged the 3rd instar stage and delayed the onset of pupariation, resulting in bigger size pupae. MKRN1 was expressed in the prothorac…

The impact of drugs on male fertility: a review.

Beside cytotoxic drugs, other drugs can impact men's fertility through various mechanisms. Via the modification of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis hormones or by non-hormonal mechanisms, drugs may directly and indirectly induce sexual dysfunction and spermatogenesis impairment and alteration of epididymal maturation. This systematic literature review summarizes existing data about the negative impact and associations of pharmacological treatments on male fertility (excluding cytotoxic drugs), with a view to making these data more readily available for medical staff. In most cases, thes

[Celiac disease in adolescents].

Nutritional status, sexual maturation and intestinal absorption were assessed in 16 adolescent celiac patients (12 females) at ages 12 and 18 year. Weight/age, height/age and weight/height were 75.5% (51.6-94.8), 90.3% (76.8-104.6) and 99.1% (76.3-112.9) at 12 years and 85.6% (64.0-105.2), 93.8% (85.9-101.2) and 110% (76.5-121.9) at 18 years of age, respectively. Sexual maturation (Tanner) was at stage I in 31%, and at stage II in 43.7% of patients at age 12 years and it had reached maturity in 75% of them at 18 years. Menarche occurred between 12 and 14 years of age, except in 3 patients in w…

Ontogenetic model of ageing and disease formation and mechanisms of natural selection.

It is known that increased mortality due to environmental hazards results, in the course of natural selection, in the shortening of maximum life span and acceleration of sexual maturation in a population subjected to an intensified pressure from external environment. As a consequence, the prereproductive period/maximum life span ratio appears to be approximately the same in each species. Mechanisms responsible for this are not clear yet. Since maximum life span is limited by both ageing and formation of certain diseases (in humans, the so-called main noninfectious diseases), the paper discusse…

Single-nucleus RNA sequencing reveals cellular and molecular signatures in the prefrontal cortex of a hypoactive sexual desire disorder rat model.

BACKGROUND: Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), a prevalent condition affecting sexual health in women, is induced by imbalanced neurobiological regulation of excitatory and inhibitory pathways associated with sexual response. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is a key region in the sexual desire response pathway. Nevertheless, the cellular dynamics and molecular mechanisms driving the pathophysiology of HSDD remain unclear, limiting targeted therapeutic development. AIM: To explore the cellular and molecular mechanisms of HSDD using a female rat model. METHODS: We established a translationa

Aggressive Antisocial Behaviors Are Related to Character Maturity in Young Swedish Violent Offenders Independent of ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Antisocial personality and psychopathic traits have constantly been found to accompany criminal and aggressive behaviors, but little attention has been given to aspects of character maturity and its relation to such behaviors. The present study investigated (1) whether level of character maturity (low, medium, and high) is associated with amount of aggressive antisocial behaviors (AABs) and psychopathic traits in young men imprisoned for violent criminality, and (2) whether such an association is independent of coexisting attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Pubertal development in the Prader-Labhart-Willi syndrome.

The sexual maturation in the Prader-Labhart-Willi (PLW) syndrome was investigated in 14 patients, 10 females and 4 males. A wide variability in the pattern of pubertal development was found including delayed puberty in 5 patients and normal puberty in 4 patients; sexual precocity was also observed in 5 patients, true precocious puberty in one patient and incomplete sexual precocity in the form of precocious pubarche in 4 patients. In 5 patients, 3 of them with precocious pubarche, the appearance of the pubertal signs was followed by a delay or arrest in their future development. An LH-RH stimu…

Sperm and oocyte communication mechanisms controlling C. elegans fertility.

During sexual reproduction in many species, sperm and oocyte secrete diffusible signaling molecules to help orchestrate the biological symphony of fertilization. In the Caenorhabditis elegans gonad, bidirectional signaling between sperm and oocyte is important for guiding sperm to the fertilization site and inducing oocyte maturation. The molecular mechanisms that regulate sperm guidance and oocyte maturation are being delineated. Unexpectedly, these mechanisms are providing insight into human diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy, and cancer. Here we review

Differential regulation of GnRH ligand and receptor genes in the brain and pituitary of Atlantic cod exposed to different photoperiod.

The onset of puberty and reproduction are tightly controlled by extrinsic and intrinsic inputs combined with genetically determined biological blueprints. Environmental inputs are then mediated by the brain-pituitary-gonad endocrine axis resulting in a unified output. In fish, one of the primary factors controlling the timing of sexual maturation is light, although how these signals are mediated in the brain and pituitary is not well understood. We therefore aimed to elucidate the molecular basis of the control of reproduction during the first spawning season in two year old female Atlantic co…
