Biomechanical Factors Associated with Intraindividual Differences in Running Economy Across Advanced Footwear Technology Models in Long-Distance Runners.

BACKGROUND: Advanced footwear technology (AFT) can enhance long-distance running performance by improving running economy (RE). However, the … ciated with intra-individual differences in RE, and a repeated measures ANOVA to compare RE between shoes at the group level. RESULTS: Across shoe conditions, shorter ground contact time was significantly associated with lower energetic cost of transport (β = 0.025, 95% CI [0.010, 0.040], t(42) = 3.33, p = 0.002), reflecting a ~ 1% improvement in RE pe …

The aetiology of juvenile plantar dermatosis.

Studies of the sweating mechanism in juvenile plantar dermatosis have demonstrated features of miliaria, including inhibition of sweating and occlusion of the sweat coil in the horny layer of the epidermis. These are considered to be a sequel to changes in the composition of children's shoes and hose. Possible remedies are suggested.

Pressure-reduction and preservation in custom-made footwear of patients with diabetes and a history of plantar ulceration.

AIMS: To assess the value of using in-shoe plantar pressure analysis to improve and preserve the offloading properties of custom-made footwear in patients with diabetes. METHODS: Dynamic in-shoe plantar pressures were measured in new custom-made footwear of 117 patients with diabetes, neuropathy, and a healed plantar foot ulcer. In 85 of these patients, high peak pressure locations (peak pressure > 200 kPa) were targeted for pressure reduction (goal: > 25% relief or below an absolute level of 200 kPa) by modifying the footwear. After each of a maximum three rounds of modifications, pressures

The interdependency of peak pressure and pressure-time integral in pressure studies on diabetic footwear: no need to report both parameters.

BACKGROUND: In plantar pressure studies on diabetic footwear, both the maximum peak pressure (MPP) and peak pressure-time integral (PTI) are often reported. However, specific conclusions for each parameter are not commonly reported, suggesting these parameters may be interchangeable. The aim was to explore the interdependency of MPP and PTI in diabetic patients wearing different types of footwear. METHODS: In-shoe plantar pressure was measured in 69 neuropathic diabetic patients who walked in custom made footwear, forefoot offloading shoes, cast shoes, and/or standard footwear. For each of si…

Determination of dynamic ankle ligament strains from a computational model driven by motion analysis based kinematic data.

External rotation of the foot has been implicated in high ankle sprains. Recent studies by this laboratory, and others, have suggested that torsional traction characteristics of the shoe-surface interface may play a role in ankle injury. While ankle injuries most often involve damage to ligaments due to excessive strains, the studies conducted by this laboratory and others have largely used surrogate models of the lower extremity to determine shoe-surface interface characteristics based on torque measures alone. The objective of this study was to develop a methodology that would integrate a mo

Arithmetic statistics of Prym surfaces.

Ultra-low-density elastomeric foams enable lightweight systems that combine high compliance with efficient energy return. Their mechanical response is inherently complex, characterized by high compressibility, nonlinear elasticity, and microstructural heterogeneity. In high-performance racing shoes, these foams are critical for low weight, high cushioning, and efficient energy return; yet, their constitutive behavior remains difficult to model and poorly understood. Here we integrate mechanical testing and machine learning to discover the mechanics of two ultra-low density elastomeric polymeri…

Gait dynamics in the wide spectrum of children with arthrogryposis: a descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is a heterogeneous condition characterized by multiple joint contractures at birth. Greater movements in the trunk and pelvis during walking have been observed in children with AMC using orthoses compared to those wearing only shoes. This study investigated gait dynamics in children with AMC and identified compensatory mechanisms that accommodate walking. METHODS: Twenty-six children with AMC who walked with orthoses or shoes and a control group consisting of 37 typically-developing children were evaluated in 3D gait analysis. Children with…

Joint contact forces during barefoot, minimal and conventional shod running are highly individual.

The supposed benefits of barefoot running are an often debated topic, with many studies investigating footwear influences on the kinematics and kinetics of running. Few studies, however, have analysed the effect on joint contact forces (JCFs). In this study, we investigated the influence of different footwear on the JCFs of the hip, knee, and ankle during running using a 3D musculoskeletal model. Kinematics were recorded from 16 volunteers while running on a treadmill at two speeds (2.0 m/s and 2.5 m/s) either barefoot (BF), wearing minimal shoes (MM), or normal shoes (NS). Alongside the JCFs,…

Immediate Effects of Medially Posted Insoles on Lower Limb Joint Contact Forces in Adult Acquired Flatfoot: A Pilot Study.

Flatfoot is linked to secondary lower limb joint problems, such as patellofemoral pain. This study aimed to investigate the influence of medial posting insoles on the joint mechanics of the lower extremity in adults with flatfoot. Gait analysis was performed on fifteen young adults with flatfoot under two conditions: walking with shoes and foot orthoses (WSFO), and walking with shoes (WS) in random order. The data collected by a vicon system were used to drive the musculoskeletal model to estimate the hip, patellofemoral, ankle, medial and lateral tibiofemoral joint contact forces. The joint c…

Leather waste--potential threat to human health, and a new technology of its treatment.

In this paper, the authors deal with the problem of processing various types of waste generated by leather industry, with special emphasis to chrome-tanned waste. The agent that makes this waste potentially hazardous is hexavalent chromium. Its compounds can have negative effects on human health and some CrVI salts are considered carcinogens. The authors present the risks of spontaneous oxidization of CrIII to CrVI in the open-air dumps as well as the possible risks of wearing bad quality shoes, in which the chromium content is not controlled. There are several ways of handling primary leather…

Influence of heel height on ankle joint moments in running.

Clinically, heel lifting or heel wedging in running shoes has been proposed as a prevention and treatment of Achilles tendinitis. It has been speculated that heel lifting decreases the Achilles tendon forces. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of heel height on resultant ankle flexion moments during running. It was assumed that plantarflexion moments at the ankle joint would indicate Achilles tendon loading. Each of the five subjects performed five running trials (4.6 m.s-1) for each of the five shoes, differing only in heel height (2.1-3.3 cm). Resultant plantar-/dorsiflexi…

Patients' and physicians' attitudes regarding the physician's professional appearance.

Although physician appearance has been a topic of interest to medical historians for more than two centuries, little objective investigation has been made into patients' and physicians' attitudes toward the physician's appearance. This study analyzed responses from 404 patients, residents, and staff physicians regarding their attitudes toward various aspects of the male and female physician's professional appearance. Positive responses from all participants were associated with traditional items of dress such as the dress, shirt and tie, dress shoes, and nylons, and for physician-identifying i…
