Relationship between sleep-wake patterns, occupational stress and sickness absence among nurses.

UNLABELLED: Individual sleep-wake characteristics play an important role in daily functioning and adaptation to shift work. They are associated with alertness, sleep quality, cognitive performance, concentration, and the ability to cope with occupational demands. High levels of occupational stress and chronic fatigue have also been identified as factors associated with sickness absence among nursing staff. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between sleep-wake characteristics, occupational stress, and the use of sick leave in a group of practicing nurses. PARTICIPA

Preventive behaviors adults report using to avoid catching or spreading influenza, United States, 2015-16 influenza season.

INTRODUCTION: Influenza vaccination can prevent influenza and potentially serious influenza-related complications. Although the single best way to prevent influenza is annual vaccination, everyday preventive actions, including good hygiene, health, dietary, and social habits, might help, too. Several preventive measures are recommended, including: avoiding close contact with people who are sick; staying home when sick; covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing; washing your hands often; avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; and practicing other good health habits like clea

Implications of Heterogeneous Biting Exposure and Animal Hosts on Trypanosomiasis brucei gambiense Transmission and Control.

The gambiense form of sleeping sickness is a neglected tropical disease, which is presumed to be anthroponotic. However, the parasite persists in human populations at levels of considerable rarity and as such the existence of animal reservoirs has been posited. Clarifying the impact of animal host reservoirs on the feasibility of interrupting sleeping sickness transmission through interventions is a matter of urgency. We developed a mathematical model allowing for heterogeneous exposure of humans to tsetse, with animal populations that differed in their ability to transmit infections, to inves

Absence from work and the medical sickness certificate.

Internet and dematerialization have greatly facilitated the medical profession. Contractual physicians and national health service doctors now have efficient tools for the electronic management of their routine administrative workload. A recent innovation is the medical sickness certificate issued by primary care providers and national health service physicians. Following postponements and uncertainties, procedures for the electronic completion and online transmission of the sickness certificate are now complete. The changes introduced by the so-called "Brunetta decree", however, have made its

Living Donor Liver Transplant for Dengue-Related Acute Liver Failure: A Case Report.

Dengue is a common viral infection, especially in tropical countries, and it is a well-known cause of acute liver failure. The effects on the liver range from a mild illness to acute liver failure. Dengue-related acute liver failure has a high mortality rate, and the role of liver transplant in such cases has been less studied, due to the rapid progression and often associated multiorgan dysfunction in severe cases. Here, we report the first living donor liver transplant for an acute liver failure due to dengue. Although liver transplant is not the choice of treatment for sick patients, timely

Factors related to emotional responses in school-aged children who have asthma.

A systematic review of the literature was performed to answer the following questions (a) What factors contribute to the emotional responses of school-age children who have asthma? (b) What are the potential gaps in the literature regarding the emotional responses of school-age children (ages 6-12) who have asthma? (c) Are children with a lower socioeconomic status (SES) and those who are minorities represented in the literature proportionate to their prevalence? Two main focus areas regarding emotional responses were identified: (a) factors related to children who have asthma and (b) factors

Post-stroke fatigue: qualitative study of three focus groups.

Fatigue affects many persons after cerebrovascular accident, particularly those with mild stroke. A qualitative methodology using focus groups with 19 community-living post-stroke survivors was utilized to explore the occupational impact of fatigue as communicated by the participants. Although self-report of a small sample of the United States' post-stroke population will have limitations in generalizability, this study identifies specific health-related quality of life issues that can occur with post-stroke fatigue. The participants felt unprepared for the fatigue phenomenon and struggled to

The role of biofeedback in stroke rehabilitation: past and future directions.

Biofeedback has been applied to many aspects of stroke rehabilitation, with mixed results. This is largely due to the varying modalities, differences between study designs, and methods of measuring success and progress. How well biofeedback works appears to be inversely related to the direct observability of the function about which information is being provided. The more covert the function (e.g., swallowing muscle activity, attention, cortical functioning, etc.), the more helpful biofeedback is likely to be. However, biofeedback in general can have a very positive impact, even through indire

Does the psychological request of the patient justify the surgery for hepatic hemangioma?

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The incidental finding of hemangiomas has increased, but the problem of the correct surgical indications of this tumor has yet to be solved. The aim of this work is to establish whether the psychological request of surgery from patients known to have a benign tumor of the liver must be avoided or not. METHODOLOGY: Age, sex, symptoms, estroprogestinic oral therapy, methods of diagnosis, surgical procedures, morbidity, mortality, postoperative hospital stay and follow-up of the patients affected by hepatic hemangioma, observed from 1992 to 2002 in our institution, have been con

An under-active or over-active internal world? An exploration of parallel dynamics within psyche and soma, and the difficulty of internal regulation, in patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

This paper explores the dynamics brought into analytic work when there is a symmetric fusion between psyche and soma within the patient. It will consider how such a fusion may emerge from reverberations between physical constitution and a lack of maternal attunement, containment and reflective function. I will describe the work with a patient, Jane, who was diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) during the course of her analysis. The dynamic of her physical symptoms within the analytic work, and the impact of her internal affects and internal 'objects' within the transference and counte

Men's experiences and their resources from cancer diagnosis to recovery.

This study describes the experiences and resources of male cancer patients in Finland during the trajectory of their illness. A semi-structured interview schedule was used to collect data on falling ill with cancer, on periods of treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy), and on convalescence. The participants (n=8), aged 42-64 (mean=53) were interviewed in a clinic setting in connection with a check-up visit. The interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed for qualitative content analysis. The male cancer patients described their experiences through the illness trajectory in term

Recurrent abdominal pain and headache--psychopathology, life events and family functioning.

We assessed the psychopathology of children and adolescents with Recurrent Abdominal Pain (RAP) and tension-type headaches (TTH), the psychopathology and Expressed Emotion (EE) of their mothers and family functioning. Additionally, we assessed the relationship of negative Life Events (LE) to RAP and headaches. Sixty-nine children and adolescents with either RAP or headaches, and their mothers were examined and compared to controls. Of the children with RAP or headache, 81.6% and 83.9% respectively carried a psychiatric diagnosis, primarily anxiety or depressive disorder, in contrast to 15% of

Neonatal lead exposure potentiates sickness behavior induced by Listeria monocytogenes infection of mice.

The effects of lead (Pb) administration on infection-induced decreases in water intake, food intake, and body weight gain have been assessed as manifestations of sickness behavior using a BALB/c mouse model. Pb acetate (0.5 mM) was administered via drinking water to dams from Day 0 postpartum to weaning and to mouse pups after weaning until sacrifice. At 22 days after birth, young mice were infected with Listeria monocytogenes. Mice with blood Pb levels of less than 25 microg/dl exhibited enhanced and prolonged sickness behavior compared to mice not exposed to Pb. With this mouse model, after

Risk and resistance factors in the adaptation in mothers of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the importance of illness severity, child functional status, psychosocial stress, intrapersonal factors, stress processing, and social-ecological factors in predicting psychological symptoms among mothers of children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). METHODS: Mothers of 92 children with JRA completed surveys while waiting with their children for physician appointments or during JRA meeting breaks. RESULTS: Mothers reported higher mean levels of psychological symptoms than a normative group. Higher levels of psychosocial stress predicted increased psychological s

Responses to depression in unipolar depressed patients: an investigation of Nolen-Hoeksema's response styles theory.

BACKGROUND: The response styles theory suggests that rumination in response to depressed mood exacerbates and prolongs depression, while distraction ameliorates and shortens it. Gender differences in response styles are said to contribute to the observed gender differences in the prevalence of unipolar depression. While empirical support for the theory has been found from a variety of non-clinical studies, its generalizability to clinically depressed patient populations remains unclear. METHODS: A cohort of 52 unipolar depressed in-patients was assessed with the Response Styles Questionnaire

Patients' experiences of Parkinson's disease.

Patients' (n = 101) experiences of Parkinson's disease (PD) were studied through structured interviews. Oblique factor analysis produced three moderately intercorrelated clusters of items reflecting reported severity of motoric, cognitive, and psychological problems, respectively. Scales formed from the factors were correlated with demographic, disease-related, and psychosocial variables. The demographic variables were not significantly correlated with the scales or with any other variables in the set. Hoehn and Yahr staging was significantly related to scores only on the motoric severity scal

Depressive symptomatology and vital exhaustion are differentially related to behavioral risk factors for coronary artery disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study proposes to assess the differences of two psychosocial risk indicators for coronary artery disease (CAD), ie, depressive symptoms and vital exhaustion. METHOD: In a representative, stratified, nation-wide sample of the population of Hungary over the age of 16 years (N = 12,640), analyses were made of whether those risk indicators were differentially related to several illness behaviors (including history of cardiovascular treatment and cardiovascular sick days), cognitions, mood states, and socioeconomic characteristics that may generally be associated with increased CAD
