Patient and family-centered care practices during inter-facility transfer of critically ill children: an exploratory mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: The inter-facility transfer of a critically ill child to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is a highly stressful time for families. This exploratory study aimed to identify care practices important to patients/families during urgent transfers of children from frontline settings to a higher level of care. METHODS: We conducted a mixed methods study using surveys and interviews of parents/guardians of children transferred to a single PICU from external institutions. Participants were surveyed about their perceived importance of transfer-related care practices, specifically

Evaluation of a psychoeducational group program for parents of adolescents with anorexia nervosa: pre-post associations with psychological distress.

INTRODUCTION: Parents play a pivotal role in a child's or adolescent's recovery from anorexia nervosa (AN). However, they often experience substantial psychological distress that may limit their ability to support treatment effectively. Structured psychoeducation may help parents understand the illness and treatment process and may support treatment engagement in young people with AN. This uncontrolled pre-post evaluation examined parental psychological distress, self-perceived knowledge and competence, and post-intervention satisfaction with a brief psychoeducational group program. METHODS:

Pre-post Mixed Methods Study of a Parent and Teen Support Intervention to Prevent Violence Against Adolescents in the Philippines.

PURPOSE: This study examines the feasibility of a culturally adapted parenting intervention (MaPa Teens) within the national cash transfer system to reduce violence against adolescents, the first such program in the Philippines. METHODS: Thirty caregiver-adolescent dyads who were beneficiaries of a government conditional cash transfer program participated in a pilot of a locally adapted version of the Parenting for Lifelong Health for Parents and Teens program. Primary outcomes of reducing child maltreatment and associated risk factors were evaluated using a single-group, pre-post design. Foc

Parental history of depression and higher basal salivary cortisol in unaffected child and adolescent offspring.

INTRODUCTION: There are contradictory findings regarding the associations of parental depression on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity of their offspring. We aimed to explore the associations of parental depression on the diurnal salivary cortisol profile in their child and adolescent offspring. METHODS: A total of 189 unaffected child and adolescent offspring as determined by structured clinical interview were divided into 3 groups according to their parental history of depression, namely current parental depression (CPD, n = 27), past parental depression (PPD, n = 57), and no

Quality of Life of Pediatric Patients With Long QT Syndrome.

Children with long QT syndrome (LQTS) live with the risk of sudden death, activity restrictions, and the need for daily medications. We sought to evaluate the quality of life (QOL), self-perception, and behavior of patients with LQTS as perceived by both patients and their parents and identify predictors of lower QOL. QOL (Pediatric QOL Inventory [PedsQL] and Pediatric Cardiac Quality of Life Inventory [PCQLI]), self-perception, and behavioral inventories were completed by patients with LQTS and their parents. Comparison of PedsQL scores was made to published data for healthy children using t

Postpartum depression and maternal-infant bonding: the mediating role of mentalizing and parenting self-efficacy.

BACKGROUND: The accumulated evidence suggested that postpartum depression was mainly associated with maternal-infant bonding. However, this link needed to be further explained by potential mediating factors. This study aimed to investigate the impact of postpartum depression on maternal-infant bonding, examining the mediating roles of mentalizing and parenting self-efficacy. METHODS: A sample of 390 postpartum women was recruited from a maternity hospital around four weeks postpartum. A multiple mediating analysis was conducted to investigate how mentalizing and parenting self-efficacy affecte

Parental History of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and PNPLA3 Polymorphism Increase the Risk of Severe Stages of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the influence of parental history of type 2 diabetes (T2D) allied to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the offspring is not known. We aimed to investigate the impact of the parental history of T2D, PNPLA3 and TM6SF2 polymorphisms in liver steatosis and fibrosis. METHODS: This was a case-control study involving the offspring of T2D patients and controls without a parental history of T2D. Participants underwent clinical and laboratory evaluation, transient elastography (TE) by Fibroscan® (Echosens, Fr) and genotyping for P

Neonatologists' Perspectives on Exploring Parental Spirituality in Prenatal Consultations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Values of religion, spirituality, and faith (RSF) are central to decision making for many parents facing extremely preterm labor or prenatal diagnoses of potentially life-limiting congenital anomalies. Neonatologists' opinions and comfort with discussing parental RSF are not well known. We sought to understand neonatologists' current practices and perceptions of exploring parental RSF in prenatal consultations. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed at a single U.S. academic institution to evaluate the inclusion of spiritual terminology in documentation

Should parents be present during screening examinations for retinopathy of prematurity?

PURPOSE: To investigate whether parents should be present during screening examinations for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) by investigating the anxiety levels of parents using two different approaches. METHODS: This cross-sectional and two-center study was carried out with the parents at the time of the first ROP screening examination of their premature infants. At one center, the parents accompanied the infants during the ROP examination (Group 1), and in the other center, they did not (Group 2). Anxiety levels were assessed with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), which consists of

Embryological and Pathophysiological Perspectives on a Rare Association of Sirenomelia with Anencephaly and Spina Bifida.

Sirenomelia is a severe developmental anomaly that manifests as the existence of a single lower limb due to fusion or the absence of one or more lower limb bones. We report a case of sirenomelia that occurred in conjunction with anencephaly and spina bifida. Numerous systems, including the genitourinary and gastrointestinal systems, have been implicated in the condition. In the present case, a single kidney, a single ureter, and an inflated and blind sigmoid colon were found following fetal dissection. In addition, the umbilical cord was histologically examined and revealed the presence of a s

Love and Truth: What Really Matters for Children Born Through Third-Party Assisted Reproduction.

Ever since the birth of the first baby born through in vitro fertilization in 1978, advances in reproductive technologies have raised new concerns about the outcomes for children. In this article, I summarize research on children born through assisted reproduction involving a third party, that is, children born through egg donation, sperm donation, and surrogacy, with particular attention to the findings of a longitudinal study of children born to heterosexual couples in the United Kingdom. The assisted reproduction families generally showed high levels of family functioning and children's adj

Who Uses Services Overall and Within High-Need Families? Social Inequalities in Access to Early Support Services in Southern Germany.

OBJECTIVES: Reducing inequalities in early childhood support is a central public health and prevention challenge because services are most e … ociated with several need indicators, including parenting stress, parenting behaviour difficulties, single parenthood and chronic child illness. A socio-economic gradient was also observed: Lower household income was associated with higher uptake, while higher parental education was associated with higher use. In the high-need subgroup (N = 3232), income differ …

Parental Anxiety, Depression, and Sleep Quality in Relation to Infant Sleep: A Two-Cohort Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVES: Parental mental health is linked to infant sleep, but research has focused mainly on mothers and on single distress dimensions. This study examined whether parental anxiety, depression, and sleep quality are associated with infant sleep across the first year, and whether mothers and fathers contribute differently. METHOD: Two independent cohorts of Taiwanese families (42 and 80 infants; 107 and 270 observations) were followed across the first year, assessed at 1-6 months (Cohort 1) and 1-12 months (Cohort 2). At each assessment, both parents completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depr

Shadows of the past - Hierarchical regression analyses on the role of childhood maltreatment experiences for postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the most common mental disorders in parents after birth. To develop tailored preventive programs, it is necessary to identify risk factors for PPD in parents. This study aimed to examine the impact of parental childhood maltreatment (CM) as a risk factor for PPD. METHODS: Data from a German study comprising n = 349 mothers and n = 46 fathers were used. Hierarchical regression models were performed to examine CM, educational background, single parenthood, emotion regulation and attachment style as predictors of symptoms of PPD. In exploratory a…
