Osteometrical and CT examination of the Japanese wolf skull.

The skulls of Japanese wolf (Canis hodophilax) were osteometrically examined and compared with those of Akita-Inu. The skull total length was not statistically different between two species. However, significant differences were demonstrated between two species in some ratios concerning the frontal bone. CT examination was carried out in the Japanese wolf skull. The data indicated that the frontal sinus is not be largely developed and compressed in the dorso-ventral direction in parasagittal area. The narrow frontal sinus fitted to external shape of the frontal bone. The cribriform plate had a…

[The facial approach to the median structures of the skull base].

Numerous routes of access to the medial basal structures of the cranium have been described, largely because of the wide variety of lesions observed in deep localizations. Access can be achieve via trans-sinusal, transfacial (trans-sphenoidal rhinoseptal, mediofacial or Lefort I), trans-oro-pharyngeal and numerous other routes. An examination of the principals involved, their development and the technical modalities demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of each and their specific indications. Access is particularly interesting with the frontal trans-sphenoid, Lefort I osteotomy and tran

[Clinical study on myxoma and chordoma in the skull base].

OBJECTIVE: The clinical manifestation, neuroimaging properties, and pathologic changes of myxoma and chordoma were studied. METHODS: Their neuroimaging properties and pathologic changes of myxoma 7 cases and chordoma 13 cases were analyzed. RESULTS: (1) Clinical manifestation: the injury of oculomotor nerve and exorbitism is dominant in myxoma, but the injury of posterior cranial nerves is dominant in chordomas. (2) Plain skull X-ray film: local irregular punctate calcification and osseous necrosis were common in myxoma. Clivus invasion moruloid calcification and cauliflower-like calcificati…

Telangiectatic osteosarcoma of the skull. A post-Paget case.

We report a case of post-Paget telangiectatic osteosarcoma of the skull in a 75-year-old woman. Such a neoplasia is a rare variant of osteosarcoma, a tumor rare in the cranic bones. The patient was submitted for a careful analysis by the following procedures: technetium scintigram, X-rays, CT scan, and MRI. After the surgical procedure, pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Both radiological and pathological pattern of this tumor are discussed in relation to the differential diagnosis. Our report shows that benign lesions may represent a possible cause of diagnostic errors. They mu…

Neurocranial morphology as determined by asymmetries of the skull base.

The goal of the current study was to provide an easy to use criterion to diagnose neurocranial asymmetries. An anatomical survey of the external aspect of the skull base was planned to correlate with radiological studies. In a sample of 239 skulls, variations of the angular relationship between the structures seen on a basilar view of the cranium were analysed. An anterior and a posterior transverse line were plotted with respect to the midline. Departures from 90 degrees to the midline for either of the transverse lines were less than 5 degrees in normal skulls, between 5 degrees and 7 degree…

Syphilitic caries of the skull--the changing face of medicine.

This paper describes the specimens of caries sicca of calvaria due to syphilis in the collections of the Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The condition appears not to have been uncommon in the nineteenth century. The mechanism of bone destruction is discussed as is also the role of secondary infection and treatment with mercury.

Brief communication: the skull attributed to Mozart--craniosynostosis or not?

The results of a detailed morphological analysis of the skull attributed to Mozart are presented which refute a recent claim that the skull as well as several of Mozart's portraits show indications of uncomplicated trigonocephaly. These indications according to the present analysis are within the limits of normal variation and derive from retention of part of the long arm of the anterior fontanelle.

Cystic schwannoma of the sphenoid sinus and skull base.

Skull base and intracranial cystic schwannomas are rare tumors. To our knowledge, a cystic schwannoma involving the sphenoid sinus has not been previously reported. The location and fluid-filled nature of the lesion resulted in an erroneous preliminary diagnosis of a destructive sphenoid sinus mucocele. Endoscopic biopsy and decompression established the correct diagnosis and reversed a progressive visual loss until definitive surgical removal of the lesion was accomplished. Diagnostic evaluation, histologic findings and management strategies are discussed.

Osteosarcomas of the skull. Clinical remarks on 19 cases.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcomas are typically long bone tumors and rarely affect the skull, with most articles reporting single cases. As elsewhere in the body, these lesions may be classified as primary or secondary, chiefly post-Paget and post-radiation therapy. METHODS: The authors reviewed the osteosarcomas of the skull diagnosed at the Division of Neurosurgery of "La Sapienza" University of Rome. The patients were placed into two groups, according to the treatment received (prechemotherapeutic era and chemotherapeutic era). In the last five patients, a diagnostic-therapeutic protocol was adopt…

[Evolution and functional morphology of primate facial skulls].

Both ontogenetically and phylogenetically the facial skull of primates consists of two components: the endocranial nasal capsule, and the exocranial membrane bones. The cartilaginous nasal capsule of the fetal period constitutes the framework for the nasal cavity, and it also functions as an expansive basis for the developing facial skull. In adult animals, its ossified parts form the fragile ethmoid bone. The structure of the nasal capsule is determined on the one hand by the spatial requirements of the orbits and of the nasal cavity (with respiratory and olfactory components), and on the oth…

Chondrosarcoma of the skull base: report of six cases.

Five patients with chondrosarcoma, grade I or II, and one with mesenchymal chondrosarcoma of the skull base were treated at our clinic between 1967 and 1991. The patients were three men and three women who ranged in age from 21 to 39 years. The presenting symptoms were diplopia, decreased visual acuity, or symptoms of involvement of VIIIth and lower cranial nerves. The duration of the symptoms ranged from 18 months to 14 years. A plain skull x-ray and tomography of the skull, computed tomographic (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance images (MRI) revealed a calcified mass. Angiograms showed an oc…

Structural variations in the jugular foramen of the human skull.

The jugular foramen was examined in 300 Anatolian skulls from the 17th and 18th centuries. In 61.6% the foramen was larger on the right and in 26% on the left, with the remainder being of almost equal size. An obvious dome caused by a superior jugular bulb was present bilaterally in 49%, on the right only in 36%, on the left only in 6%; it was absent bilaterally in 10.3%. Complete bony septation occurred in 5.6% on the right and in 4.3% on the left, partial septation was observed in 2.6% on the right and in 19.6% on the left. Another foramen which is completely separated by a spicule of bone a…

Antimicrobial prophylaxis for fractured base of skull in children.

The details are reviewed of 50 children who were treated over a 10-year period with clinical signs of fractured base of skull. Two patients died early without signs of sepsis--due to the severity of their head injuries. Of the remainder, 23 received antibiotic prophylaxis and 25 did not. One patient from each of these groups developed pneumococcal meningitis, and they were successfully treated. Our results correlate well with those previously published, confirming the low incidence of infective complications with or without prophylaxis. The need to assemble a large enough series to make statis…

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of the skull and meninges in infancy.

Three cases of melanotic neuroectodermal tumors of infancy are presented. Two were localized on the midline, involving the skull and extending subdurally. One was located on the inner aspect of the dura and developed intracranially. Two had a benign course following gross total removal. One had a malignant course, recurring locally and spreading within the brain. The difficulties of removing these tumors when they are implanted on the midline are stressed. Histological features of prognostic value are pointed out. Further support for neural crest origin of these tumors is given.

Continuous tooth eruption in Australian aboriginal skulls.

Increases in the distance from the cemento-enamel junction to the alveolar crest (CEJ-AC) have often been attributed to senile atrophy of the bone or to the effects of periodontitis, without reference to the condition of the alveolar crest. This study investigated the relationship between CEJ-AC distance, tooth wear, gender, site of the CEJ-AC measurements, and age in 161 pre-white-contact Australian aboriginal skulls. Individual teeth were included in the study when there was no evidence of dehiscence, periodontitis, or abscess cavity formation in the supporting alveolar bone. The CEJ-AC dist…
