Can reduced leftward asymmetry of white matter integrity be a marker of transition to psychosis in at-risk mental state?

As a biomarker for the degree of psychosis development, the lateral asymmetry of white matter (WM) integrity in each area of the cerebrum has been investigated; as a result, a reduced leftward asymmetry of WM integrity has been reported in patients with schizophrenia. Although individuals with an at-risk mental state for psychosis (ARMS) who subsequently develop psychosis are believed to have poorer social functioning, only a few studies have actually examined the associations between WM abnormalities and social functioning. The aim of the present study was to clarify the possibly predictive a

Psychological Security and Social Well-Being Among Women Attending Comprehensive Health Centers in East Guilan, Iran: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Previous studies have suggested that psychological security is positively associated with social well-being in the gene … ationship was observed between three of the five dimensions of social well-being (social coherence, social integration, and social contribution) and three dimensions of psychological security (self-confidence, life satisfaction, and people's view of the individual). Integrating Bioenergetic Therapy Model with Neuropsychopharmacological Interventions in Long-standing Treatment-resistant Schizophrenia: Case Series and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND: The bioenergetic therapy model combines holistic somatic therapy with psychotherapy, addressing both physical and emotional aspects of healing. In cases of long-standing treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), which may persist for over two decades, finding effective therapeutic strategies remain a significant challenge. Despite numerous treatment options, no existing reports integrate somatosensory therapy with neuropsychopharmacological interventions for these complex cases. PURPOSE: To demonstrate the integration of bioenergetic therapy with neuropsychopharmacological interven

Otitis Media With Effusion in Patients With Cleft Palate.

This article reviews otitis media with effusion (OME) in children with cleft palate (CP), the current evidence and recommendations regarding management of OME in cleft palate with a focus on interdisciplinary communication, and the impact this condition has on patients and caregivers. OME is nearly ubiquitous in children with CP due to the anatomical variation of the palatal musculature and resultant Eustachian tube dysfunction. If untreated, OME can negatively affect hearing, speech development, cognitive development, and social integration. Patients with CP have the potential to be negativel…

Musicianship enhances hearing-in-noise performance in older and younger adults: Evidence from the Music-in-Noise Task.

Hearing-in-noise (HIN) perception requires a complex interaction between sensory and cognitive functions. Older adults commonly report HIN difficulties, which contribute to social isolation, depression, and cognitive decline. Musical experience has emerged as a potential protective factor against age-related HIN deficits, with auditory working memory identified as a mediator. However, inconsistent findings regarding musicianship advantages persist, and research examining whether these benefits extend to older adults remains limited. In this study, we investigated the effects of musicianship on

A qualitative exploration of the implementation facilitators and challenges of a community health worker program to address health disparities for people recently released from incarceration using the consolidated framework for implementation research.

BACKGROUND: Despite the potential for community health worker (CHW)-led programs to improve the health of people with justice involvement (PWJI), little is known about the practical implementation of such models. We explored barriers and facilitators to implementation of a municipal CHW program, the Health Justice Network (NYC HJN), led by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) in partnership with three reentry-focused community-based organizations (CBOs) and three federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) that was designed to serve the health and social service nee

Predictors of general quality of life and the mediating role of health related quality of life in patients with schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: The concept 'quality of life' (QoL) has become increasingly important as an outcome measure in the evaluation of services and in clinical trials of people with schizophrenia. This study examines the mediating role of health related quality of life (HRQoL) in the prediction of general quality of life (GQoL). METHOD: QoL and other patient- and illness characteristics (psychopathology, overall functioning, illness history, self-esteem and social integration) were measured in a group of 143 outpatients with schizophrenia. GQoL was measured by the Lancashire Quality of Life Profile a…

Predictive factors for outcome of treatment for alcohol problems.

Two samples of problem drinkers were followed up 2 and 4 years after they completed treatment. The first consisted of 72 men and 16 women admitted to a program for alcoholics (the inpatient sample), and the second, of 57 men and 35 women who participated in a program of outpatient treatment (the outpatient sample). At start of treatment, the outpatient sample, was generally characterized by a higher degree of social integration and more moderate alcohol problems than those found in the inpatient sample. These differences were sustained during the part of the follow-up period for which comparat…

Children with mild learning difficulties in an integrated and in a special school: comparisons of behaviour, teasing and teachers' attitudes.

Comparisons were made between children and teachers in two schools, one a mainstream school with an integrated resource unit for children with mild learning difficulties, the other a special school. Seventeen children with mild learning difficulties from the special school and ten children with mild learning difficulties from the mainstream school, matched with ten mainstream children for age and sex, took part in the study. Observations were made on children in the playground and their social proximity and positive and negative behaviours were categorised. Self-reports on teasing, bullying an

Perception of facial trustworthiness in mild cognitive impairment.

BackgroundImpaired social behavior in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents an important burden for caregivers and its presence is associated with increased risk of conversion to dementia. Social cognition provides a relevant framework for investigating functional and social outcomes of these patients but is still based on a very narrow number of domains and lacks robust connection to clinical outcomes.ObjectiveThe present study aims to investigate social trait inference, our ability to form judgements about others, in MCI patients and how it relates to functional outcomes.MethodsWe used

Visual Integration Mechanisms in Young Adults with High and Low Autistic Traits.

Background: Social interaction requires the efficient extraction and integration of visual information. Although atypicalities in global processing and visual perception have been reported in autism, their relationship with self-reported social-skills-related autistic traits remains unclear. Methods: Using an extreme-groups design, 179 university students completed the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ). Individuals with scores at least ±1 SD were selected to form high-AQ (n = 20) and low-AQ (n = 22) groups. Participants completed two complementary psychophysical tasks assessing object perception u

Valence-dependent functional connectivity during vicarious observation of hostile and affiliative social interactions.

Social environment profoundly influences well-being, yet the neural correlates of vicariously observing workplace interactions across the emotional spectrum remain underexplored. This study investigated valence-dependent patterns of functional connectivity (FC) during observation of hostile and affiliative customer-employee encounters in thirty-four healthy adults. Seed-based FC analysis examined the connectivity of key regions associated with empathy and relational social cognitive processing, and region-of-interest (ROI)-to-ROI analysis evaluated the configuration of three core brain network
