Social and emotional well-being intervention to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression among Ukrainian refugees resettled in Massachusetts.

BACKGROUND: Mental health problems are high among refugees due to their traumatic experiences of fleeing war and witnessing disasters and deaths due to violence and conflict. Refugees are exposed to various socio-cultural stressors during their migration journey before, during, and after arriving at the host country, which may increase their risk of mental health problems. Strength-based interventions may be beneficial to address their socio-cultural and psychological stressors by strengthening individual's strengths to address their problems. AIMS: This study evaluated the effect of a Social

Lifetime depressive and current social anxiety are associated with problematic internet use in adolescents with ADHD: a cross-sectional study.

AIM: To evaluate the relationships between problematic internet use (PIU) and psychiatric comorbid disorders and internet use habits in a clinical sample of adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 95 adolescents with ADHD. Problematic behaviors and symptoms related to internet use were evaluated via Young's Internet Addiction Scale (YIAS), and subjects with a YIAS score of ≥50 were categorized as PIU while those with a score of <50 were defined as normal internet use (NIU). The two groups were compared with respect to demog

Patient and family social media use surrounding a novel treatment for a rare genetic disease: a qualitative interview study.

PURPOSE: Advances in gene therapy and precision medicine have led to a growing number of novel treatments for rare genetic diseases. Patients/families may lack access to up-to-date, accurate, and relevant information about these treatments. Social media offers one potentially important resource for these communities. Our goal was to understand how patients/families with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)-a rare genetic condition-used social media to share, consume, and evaluate information about the novel treatment nusinersen (Spinraza) following the drug's approval. METHODS: We conducted qualitat

Structural and functional brain correlates of theory of mind impairment post-stroke.

The ability to understand the mental states of others - also known as Theory of Mind (ToM) - is critical for normal social interactions. We combine behavioural probes with structural and functional brain imaging to provide the first comprehensive analysis of ToM deficits following stroke using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). First, fMRI was used to identify the functional brain network involved in a non-clinical cohort. Results indicated that, relative to a control task, the RMET increased activity in a widespread functional bilateral network comprising frontal and temporo-pariet

Differential role of temporoparietal junction and medial prefrontal cortex in causal inference in autism: an independent component analysis.

Neuroimaging studies have consistently identified a network of brain regions responsible for making inferences of others' mental states. This network includes the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) at the temporoparietal junction (TPJ), and temporal poles. Although TPJ and MPFC are key nodes of the Theory of Mind (ToM) network, their relative functional roles are still debated. This study sought to examine the contribution of these regions in causal attribution and to explore the nature of the ToM network in people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). P

Determinants of social health in later life: the roles of family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being.

INTRODUCTION: Population aging has intensified scholarly attention towards the social dimensions of well-being in later life. While previous research has largely emphasized physical health and economic security, social health-reflecting individuals' ability to maintain meaningful relationships and social participation-remains comparatively underexplored, particularly among older adults in rural communities. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates how family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being contribute to social health in later life. METHODS: We conduct

Nurse Perceptions of End-of-Life Care Quality Across Long-Term Care, Home, and Social Model Hospice Home Settings: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

This qualitative descriptive study explored nursing perspectives on end-of-life care quality across 3 distinct community settings: long-term care facilities, patients' homes, and social model hospice homes. Nurses provide most of the direct end-of-life care in these settings, yet their perspectives remain understudied. Their perspective is essential for improving end-of-life care quality and supporting patients and families during this critical time. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 licensed nurses who had provided end-of-life care across all 3 settings. Participants were recr

Epidemiology and phylogenomic characterization of the Clade IIb C.1 Mpox outbreak in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2023-2024).

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the Monkeypox virus, which is divided into two main genetic clades: Clade I and Clade II. A large-scale outbreak linked to Clade IIb emerged in 2022 and rapidly spread to more than 100 countries worldwide. Here, we describe the first and only documented Mpox outbreak in Cambodia (2023-2024), the public health outbreak response efforts and analysis, and integrating epidemiological and genomic approaches. To investigate the outbreak, samples from suspect cases were confirmed using qPCR before virus whole genome sequences were obtained for phylogenomic analy

Pain experience reduces social avoidance to others in pain: a c-Fos-based functional connectivity network study in mice.

Pain experience increases individuals' perception and contagion of others' pain, but whether pain experience affects individuals' affiliative or antagonistic responses to others' pain is largely unknown. Additionally, the neural mechanisms underlying how pain experience modulates individuals' responses to others' pain remain unclear. In this study, we explored the effects of pain experience on individuals' responses to others' pain and the underlying neural mechanisms. By comparing locomotion, social, exploration, stereotyped, and anxiety-like behaviors of mice without any pain experience (naï

Maximising environmental sustainability on the return to in-person conferencing: Report from a 2500-person anaesthesia meeting in Sydney, Australia.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted medical conferences, where restrictions on public gatherings resulted in the postponement or cancellation of in-person meetings. Virtual events emerged as a substitute, providing a mechanism for scientific collaboration and continuing medical education with the additional benefit of low environmental impact. However, digital events may not meet all the needs of delegates, such as professional networking and social connection. In this report, we describe the methods used to minimise the carbon footprint of the 2023 Australian and New Zealand College of Anaestheti

The neural basis of sequence learning: A neuroimaging meta-analysis across social, cognitive and motor domains.

Despite its importance, sequence learning has been mostly studied in the visuo-motor domain and its neural underpinnings are debated. Here, we present a novel coordinate-based meta-analysis of brain areas involved in deterministic sequence learning across social mentalizing, cognitive, visuo-motor and motor domains, under both implicit and explicit conditions, focusing primarily on acquisition. The analysis revealed a central network including frontal areas, cerebellum, and basal ganglia, with domain-specific specializations. At the cortical level, the medial prefrontal cortex appears to be sp

Influence of Social Media on Sexualized Drug Use and Chemsex Among Chinese Men Who Have Sex With Men: Observational Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Sexualized drug use (SDU; the use of any psychoactive substance before or during sexual intercourse) is prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM) and may aggravate the worsening HIV epidemic in this key population. OBJECTIVE: This observational prospective cohort study investigated factors predicting the occurrence of SDU within a 6-month follow-up period among a sample of MSM in Hong Kong. We hypothesized that perceptions related to SDU would mediate the association between the influence of social media/gay social networking apps and SDU during the follow-up period. METHOD

Group-wise sparse coding for the discovery of functional connectivity-based biomarkers in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is currently diagnosed through behavioral observations and evaluations, but there is still a lack of objective and consistent biomarkers. Children and adolescents with ASD exhibit impairments in advanced social, emotional, and cognitive functions, such as a lack of empathy. In general, the concept of empathy encompasses several socio-emotional and cognitive components based on interacting brain circuits. Identification of disease-related biomarkers at the brain network level could provide a crucial avenue for advancing ASD imaging research and improvi

Desistance from crime following substance use treatment: the role of treatment retention, social network and self-control.

BACKGROUND: Reductions in crime are often reported following substance use treatment. We explore the relationship between desistance from crime, treatment type, treatment retention and positive changes in known risk factors for crime. METHODS: We used data from the NorComt-study; a longitudinal study of substance users (n = 341) enrolled in comprehensive treatment in Norway (2012-2015). At treatment initiation (T0) and 1 year later (T1), we collected self-reported data on criminal involvement, treatment, substance use, social network and self-control. We calculated adjusted odds ratios (aOR)

Belonging, social connection and non-clinical care: Experiences of HIV peer support among recently diagnosed people living with HIV in Australia.

Effective HIV treatments have transformed the medical needs of people living with HIV (PLHIV) to a chronic condition. However, stigma, poorer mental health outcomes and social isolation remain significant challenges for many PLHIV. HIV peer support programs have assisted PLHIV in navigating the clinical, emotional and social aspects of living with HIV. We draw on semi-structured interviews with 26 recently diagnosed PLHIV in Australia to explore experiences of HIV peer support services. Our thematic analysis identified three overarching themes. First, participants commonly reported that peer s
