Work participation, social roles, and empowerment of Q-fever fatigue syndrome patients ≥10 years after infection.

OBJECTIVE: To determine work participation, social roles, and empowerment of QFS patients ≥10-year after infection. METHODS: QFS patients ≥10-year after acute infection, who were of working age, participated in a cross-sectional survey study. Work participation, fulfilment of social roles, and empowerment outcomes were studied for the total population, as well as for subgroups based on employment type and current work status. Associations between empowerment, work and social roles were examined. RESULTS: 291 participants were included. Of the 250 participants who had paid work before Q-fever

Investigation of social and cognitive predictors in non-transition ultra-high-risk' individuals for psychosis using spiking neural networks.

Finding predictors of social and cognitive impairment in non-transition Ultra-High-Risk individuals (UHR) is critical in prognosis and planning of potential personalised intervention strategies. Social and cognitive functioning observed in youth at UHR for psychosis may be protective against transition to clinically relevant illness. The current study used a computational method known as Spiking Neural Network (SNN) to identify the cognitive and social predictors of transitioning outcome. Participants (90 UHR, 81 Healthy Control (HC)) completed batteries of neuropsychological tests in the doma

Social care in childhood and adult outcomes: double whammy for minority children?

BACKGROUND: Children in social care report poor outcomes in many aspects of their later lives. Less is known about differences by ethnicity. OBJECTIVE: We examined the health, socio-economic, family and living arrangements across the first three decades of adult life by the intersection of ethnicity (White, Black, South Asian) with social care. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Linked census and life events data for a 1% sample of the population of England and Wales in the ONS Longitudinal Study. Participants were dependent children in 1971-2001 (analytic sample n = 669,474). METHODS: Categorical r

Associations between social isolation and diet quality among US adults with disability participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013-2018.

Social isolation and disability are established risk factors for poor nutrition. We aimed to assess whether social isolation is associated with diet quality specifically among adults with disabilities. This cross-sectional analysis used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013-2018. Adults with a disability, who were not pregnant, breastfeeding, or missing dietary intake data were included (n = 5,167). Disability was defined as a physical functioning limitation based on difficulty with any activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, lower ex

Social cohesion as a modifier of joint air pollution exposure and incident dementia.

Social cohesion can reduce stress, increase social interaction, and improve cognitive reserve. These social mechanisms may modify the effects of air pollution on dementia risk. This cohort study examines the potential moderating effect of social cohesion on associations between joint air pollution exposure and incident dementia leveraging data from 5112 community-dwelling adults ≥65 years of age enrolled in the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). Study participants were enrolled in 2011 and followed through 2018. We assigned 2010 residential census tract-level exposures to five air

Social Vulnerability and Out-of-Hospital Identification of Neurologic Emergencies.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Timely out-of-hospital recognition and management of neurologic emergencies-including status epilepticus, stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury-are critical to improving patient outcomes. However, the influence of social risk factors on the delivery and quality of emergency medical services (EMS) care in these time-sensitive conditions remains poorly understood and may contribute to long-term morbidity and mortality. This study examines the association between community-level social vulnerability and out-of-hospital identification of neurologic emergenci

Parental and social factors in relation to child psychopathology, behavior, and cognitive function.

Parental and social factors have long-term impact on the neurodevelopment of offspring, but tend to highly covary with each other. Thus, it is difficult to parse out which parental and social factor contributes most to neurodevelopmental outcomes. This study aimed to assess clusters of parental and social factors associated with child psychopathology, behavioral problems, and cognition. This study employed the data of 11,875 children (9 to 11 years) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on 39 environmental measures and 30

Partnership Trajectories and Older Adults' Supportive and Strained Friendship Ties: Do Patterns Differ for Men and Women?

We examine prospectively associations between partnership statuses/transitions and friend support/strain, and gender differences therein, among U.S. older adults. Data are from the 2006-2022 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (N = 13,495). Multivariable analyses are adjusted for health, sociodemographic, and personality covariates, and baseline friend support and strain. Married and cohabiting persons report less friendship support and strain than their divorced, widowed, or never married counterparts, with married and cohabiting men reporting significantly less support than their female

Marital Status and Problem Gambling Among Australian Older Adults: The Mediating Role of Loneliness.

Problem gambling rates in older adults have risen dramatically in recent years and require further investigation. Limited available research has suggested that social needs may motivate gambling and hence problem gambling in older adults. Un-partnered older adults may be at greater risk of problem gambling than those with a partner. The current study explored whether loneliness mediated the marital status-problem gambling relationship, and whether gender moderated the mediation model. It was hypothesised that the relationship between being un-partnered and higher levels of loneliness would be

Trajectories of emotional-behavioral difficulty and academic competence: A 6-year, person-centered, prospective study of affluent suburban adolescents.

This longitudinal study of affluent suburban youth (N = 319) tracked from 6th to 12th grade is parsed into two segments examining prospective associations concerning emotional-behavioral difficulties and academic achievement. In Part 1 of the investigation, markers of emotional-behavioral difficulty were used to cluster participants during 6th grade. Generalized estimating equations were then used to document between-cluster differences in academic competence from 6th to 12th grade. In Part 2 of the study, indicators of academic competence were used to cluster the same students during 6th grad

[Social inequalities in health, early child development and biological embedding].

This paper describes evidence that led to the concept of biological embedding and introduces approaches designed to elucidate its mechanisms and role. Biological embedding occurs when: experience gets under the skin and alters human biological and developmental processes; systematic differences in experience in different social environments in society lead to systematically different biological and developmental states; these differences are stable and long term; and, finally, they have the capacity to influence health, well-being, learning, or behavior over the life course. The concept of bio

The solution space: developing research and policy agendas to eliminate employment-related health inequalities.

As in many other areas of social determinants of health, policy recommendations on employment conditions and health inequalities need to be implemented and evaluated. Case studies at the country level can provide a flavor of "what works," but they remain essentially subjective. Employment conditions research should provide policies that actually reduce health inequalities among workers. Workplace trials showing some desired effect on the intervention group are insufficient for such a broad policy research area. To provide a positive heuristic, the authors propose a set of new policy research p

Adults' versus children's perceptions of a child with autism or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The present study examined public perceptions toward children with autism or with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A convenience sample was used consisting of 30 children (7-12-year-olds) and 30 adults. Participants read a stereotyped scenario featuring either a child with autism, a child with ADHD, or a normal child. Child participants were significantly more likely than adults to (a) express dislike/avoidance toward a child described with either stereotypic autistic or ADHD behaviors, and (b) perceive the child with ADHD as unlike themselves. However, child participants and a

Socioeconomic status, psychosocial processes, and perceived health: an interpersonal perspective.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial variables, including stress, emotions, and social factors, may contribute to the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and health. Concepts and methods from interpersonal theory (1) could provide a useful framework for research concerning the roles of psychosocial factors in socioeconomic health disparities. PURPOSE: We examined the association between SES and psychosocial processes captured by the interpersonal circumplex and tested the degree to which circumplex ratings explained the association between SES and perceived health. METHODS: San Diego communit

Disparities in health: common myths and uncommon truths.

A reappraisal of disparities by deprivation provides new and important information. NZDep96 is an area-based index of socioeconomic deprivation that uses nine variables measured in the 1996 census. The distribution of the Māori ethnic group is sharply skewed towards the most deprived deciles with only three percent in decile 1 and twenty-six percent residing in decile 10 meshblocks. More than half (56%) of Māori live in areas represented by the three most deprived deciles. This pattern is consistent within both sectors of the Māori ethnic group: sole Māori--those who give Māori as their only e

Factor structure of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and the Social Phobia Scale.

In the study of social anxiety, it is common to differentiate between social interaction versus performance anxiety. The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale was designed to assess social interaction anxiety, and the Social Phobia Scale to assess fear of scrutiny by others (Mattick and Clarke, 1989). In common use, these scales are typically administered together and treated as subscales of a larger measure. However, the joint factor structure of these instruments has never been examined; therefore, it is unclear whether or not the items on these scales actually represent distinct aspects of socia

Depression and social functioning in general hospital in-patients.

Impairment of social functioning is often associated with depression and contributes to an unfavorable course of the disease. Although it must be suspected that both social maladaptation and depression could obstruct recovery from somatic diseases, little attention has been paid to their interaction in general hospital patients. To assess social integration in depressive and psychiatrically healthy general hospital in-patients, 250 patients were studied with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), a structured clinical interview, and the Social Interview Schedule (SIS). From c

The relationship of social environment, social networks, and health outcomes in the Seattle Longitudinal Study: two analytical approaches.

This study examined the relation of social networks and perceived social environment to health outcomes and cost utilization over a 1-year period in a community sample of 387 (173 males, 214 females). Two analytical strategies, a variable-oriented approach and a subject-oriented approach, were used to complement each other: structural equation modeling assessed the direct relationship between social relationships and health, while cluster analysis examined how social relationship patterns were related to health outcomes. Lower levels of perceived social environment were associated with an incr

Recurrent depression: an assessment of family burden and family attitudes.

Recognition that a psychiatrically ill family member has profound effects on family life and significant others has stimulated the need for more precise assessments of family members. The authors evaluated the burden experienced by those in the immediate environment of an individual with recurrent depressive illness as well as the beliefs they hold about the illness. This report presents a preliminary body of data on the level and types of distress shared by family members, especially family members living with the patient. Such information is valuable in designing educational interventions fo

Theory of mind in mild cognitive impairment and Parkinson's disease: The role of memory impairment.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is impaired in Parkinson's disease (PD). Whether social cognitive impairment (iSC) is a by-product of the underlying cognitive deficits in PD or a process independent of cognitive status is unknown. To this end, the present study was designed to investigate the weight of specific cognitive deficits in social cognition, considering different mild cognitive impairment subtypes of PD (PD-MCI). METHODS: Fifty-eight PD patients underwent a neuropsychological battery assessing executive functions, memory, language, and visuospatial domains, together with social cognitiv
