Dynamics and control of diseases in networks with community structure.

The dynamics of infectious diseases spread via direct person-to-person transmission (such as influenza, smallpox, HIV/AIDS, etc.) depends on the underlying host contact network. Human contact networks exhibit strong community structure. Understanding how such community structure affects epidemics may provide insights for preventing the spread of disease between communities by changing the structure of the contact network through pharmaceutical or non-pharmaceutical interventions. We use empirical and simulated networks to investigate the spread of disease in networks with community structure.

Social Work-Supported Strategies to Reduce Postoperative Readmissions in Orthopedic Surgery: A Narrative Review.

Postoperative readmissions in orthopedic surgery remain a persistent cause of patient morbidity and increased healthcare costs, many of which are preventable through improved care coordination. Social workers are uniquely positioned to address psychosocial and structural barriers influencing postoperative recovery. This narrative review examined peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2025 using PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Google Scholar. Eligible studies included U.S.-based articles evaluating social work roles in discharg

Social Reward Learning Deficits and Concordant Brain Alterations in Rats Overexpressing Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1).

Social deficits are a hallmark of schizophrenia, often characterized by impairments in processing and integrating socially transmitted information. However, translational models that accurately capture these deficits remain scarce. The Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 gene (DISC1), a key susceptibility factor implicated in the etiology of psychiatric disorders, has been shown to cause DISC1 protein aggregation and dysfunctional signaling when modestly overexpressed, ultimately resulting in aberrant dopamine homeostasis. In this study, we employed a transgenic rat model overexpressing human DISC1 (

Help-seeking for alcohol-related problems: social contexts surrounding entry into alcoholism treatment or Alcoholics Anonymous.

OBJECTIVE: The role of problem drinkers' social contexts in help-seeking patterns was investigated using recent entrants into outpatient alcoholism treatment or Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Untreated, active problem drinkers served as controls. METHOD: Subjects (N = 45, with 15 per group: 62% male) were recruited from the community. Habitual drinking practices, social network characteristics, social support, help-seeking barriers and incentives, and event occurrences during the 2 years prior to help-seeking were assessed during structured interviews. Collaterals verified subject reports. RESUL

Recent advances in the brain imaging of social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most common and disabling anxiety disorders, yet much remains to be learned about its psychobiology. Although functional imaging has emphasized the role of the amygdala and other limbic structures in the neurobiology of SAD, structural and connectivity imaging techniques have emphasized the possibility of abnormalities in other regions and in whole-brain networks. The involvement of a broad range of networks in SAD is consistent with current understandings of the neuroanatomy of emotion and of social processing.

Psychometric evaluation of the Dutch version of the Aggression Questionnaire.

Confirmatory factor analyses were done in an attempt to replicate the factor structure of the Aggression Questionnaire constructed by Buss and Perry (1992) [Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 63, 452-459] in a Dutch sample. The findings indicated that the Buss and Perry 4-factor model provided a poor fit to the full 29-item questionnaire. Although generally confirming the 4-factor structure, subsequent analyses revealed that a better fit was obtained by omitting 3 items (1 Verbal Aggression and 2 Hostility items). In general, the present findings are rather similar to previous resea

"I Got Laughed at for the Shuffle Noise I Make": Parkinson's Disease and Stigma.

Background and Purpose: People with Parkinson's disease (PD) are at risk for stigma. The stigma theory suggests four stigma types: public stigma, self-stigma, stigma by association, and structural stigma. The purposes of this study were to understand how people with PD and caregivers perceived and experienced stigma, review the literature and scan social media for evidence of stigma and PD, and examine the interrelationships between stigma types. Methods: This was a multicase, qualitative, descriptive research study. Cases included interviews with people with PD and caregivers, a literature re

Parental care shapes anxiety-like behavior, oxytocin, social interaction, and ethanol sensitivity in adolescent C57BL/6J mice.

RATIONALE: Parenting conditions significantly affect neurodevelopment. Previous preclinical studies show that adolescents reared by a single mother (SM) exhibit an anxiety-prone phenotype, greater activation of anxiety-related brain regions, enhanced sensitivity to ethanol-induced anxiolysis, and higher ethanol intake compared to biparentally reared (BP) peers. However, it remains unclear whether this phenotype is accompanied by alterations in the oxytocinergic system and associated changes in social behavior during adolescence. OBJECTIVES: To analyze whether SM rearing is associated with alt

Information exchange or discussion? A qualitative study on cross-sectoral collaboration between social security service and healthcare service for patients with chronic fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue, with or without an identified underlying cause, can severely restrict social participation, education, employment, and daily activities, often leading to long-term disability. In parallel with the health challenges, many affected individuals also seek support from social security services. While cross-sectoral collaboration between healthcare and social security service in managing chronic conditions is increasingly studied, little is known about such collaboration for patients with chronic fatigue. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the experiences

Teachers' Perspectives on Social Media Networking for Indonesian Language Learning in Inclusive Elementary Schools: A Multi-Method Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Effective learning strategies are essential for inclusive elementary classrooms, particularly in Indonesian language education, where students have diverse learning needs and digital access levels. Although social media has become a common educational tool, its structured use as a pedagogical model for inclusive learning in Indonesian schools is limited. Previous studies have largely focused on general online learning, leaving a gap in understanding how social media can foster inclusion and language skill development. This study addresses that gap by exploring how social media can

Family Socioeconomic Status in Adolescence and Gender Identification in Emerging Adulthood.

This study contributes to research exploring social factors shaping gender identification. Informed by structural symbolic interactionism, social identity theory, and Levitt's psychosocial theory of gender, we explore how a key aspect of external social structure-adolescent family socioeconomic status-is associated with gender identification in emerging adulthood. We examine whether correlates of family socioeconomic status, including adolescent family and educational experiences and friend and high school characteristics, are associated with a cisgender, binary transgender, nonbinary, or gend…

Translation and Initial Validation of the Japanese Version of the Self-Beliefs Related to Social Anxiety Scale.

Cognitive models of social anxiety posit that there are several types of maladaptive beliefs responsible for persistent social anxiety. Although these beliefs are theoretically important, currently there is no validated measure of these beliefs in Japan. In the present study, we translated into Japanese a well-validated measure of these beliefs, the Self-Beliefs Related to Social Anxiety (SBSA) Scale. The psychometric properties of the scale were also examined in two nonclinical samples ( ns = 401 and 30). Using confirmatory factor analysis, the Japanese version of the SBSA was found to have a

Influence of structural racism on cancer health disparities: Tailoring measures relevant to multiple myeloma.

This commentary highlights a need for comprehensive measures of structural racism tailored to cancer health disparities, in particular Black-White disparities in multiple myeloma (MM). Recent political and social calls and advances in the ability to quantitate structural racism have led to rapidly growing research on the health consequences of structural racism. However, to date, most studies have used unidimensional measures of structural racism that do not capture cumulative influences or enable the identification of factors most responsible for driving disparities. Furthermore, measures may

Does attention bias modification reduce anxiety in socially anxious college students? An experimental study of potential moderators and considerations for implementation.

According to cognitive models, preferential attention to social threat contributes to maintenance of social anxiety. Socially anxious individuals are known to show attention biases to threatening stimuli, although there is inconsistency in the literature with regards to the type of attentional biases they present. This study examines the effect of attention bias modification (ABM) for social anxiety in non-treatment-seeking college students meeting social anxiety disorder criteria, taking into consideration previous mixed results regarding its effectiveness. Attention bias levels and types (i.

Reconceptualizing Social Acceptance: Stigma, Prejudice, and the Developmental Implications of School Experiences of Students with Intellectual Disability.

Societal prejudices shape the social positioning of students with intellectual disability in educational contexts. This study explores how social acceptance is produced and contested through everyday interactions influenced by stigma, cultural norms, and institutional practices. Drawing on Goffman's conceptualization of stigma and Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems framework, social acceptance is treated as a relational and power-laden process rather than an individual trait. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with teachers and parents of ch

An examination of the potential benefits of expert guided physical activity for supporting recovery from extreme social withdrawal: Two case reports focused on the treatment of Hikikomori.

Extreme and long-term social withdrawal, first described in Japan as Hikikomori, has now become a globally recognized mental health problem. Intervention studies severely lag behind epidemiological and phenomenological research. We present two descriptive case reports of Japanese university students with Hikikomori who participated in an early phase test of a structured intervention involving physical activities that was developed and facilitated by clinicians and physical education specialists-Human Movement Consultation (HMC). The two recipients (19- and 29-years old at the start of treatmen

How should coronaphobia Be conceptualized? Evaluating competing models of the COVID-19 Phobia Scale using confirmatory factor analysis.

Coronaphobia represents the fears and phobias attributed to the COVID-19 virus and pandemic. The COVID-19 Phobia Scale, previously validated as a four-factor structure, is a widely used multidimensional measure to assess coronaphobia. The current study scrutinized various competing factor structures of this instrument to identify the optimal psychometric representation of coronaphobia. Adults (N = 412) ranging in age from 19 to 84 years completed the COVID-19 Phobia Scale. Several theoretically plausible factor structures of coronaphobia were tested and compared using confirmatory factor analy
