A chiral non-aqueous CE system with UV and mass spectrometric detection has been developed. The enantioseparation was promoted by diastereomeric complex (ion-pair) formation between the amines (e.g. salbutamol, atenolol) and the chiral selector, (-)-2,3:4,6-di-O-isopropylidene-2-keto-L-gulonic acid [(-)-DIKGA]. The run and analytical application of oxidation reaction of promazine (PM) and thioridazine (TR) hydrochlorides with iron(III) and ferrocyanide(III) are described. The coloured products of oxidation absorb at 512 nm for promazine and 634 nm for thioridazine. This property is a basis of a rapid, accurate and sensitive spectrophotometric method for determination of these phenothiazines. The elaborated methods allow to determine 3-28 microgPM/ml in Fe(III)-PM and 2-11 microgPM/ml in [Fe(CN)6](3-)-PM systems, 2.5-22 microgTR/ml in the Fe(III)-TR and 4-16 microgTR/ml in [Fe(CN)6](3-)-TR systems.

o-Chloranil has been shown to form 1:1 molecular complexes with pyridine and 2-, 3- and 4-picolines in CCl4 medium. Isosbestic points have been found but charge-transfer bands could not be detected. The formation constants of the complexes exhibit a very good linear free energy relationship from which the Hammett p parameter for the complexation reaction is found to be -3.67.

The near infrared spectra (3800-10 500 cm(-1) of phenol-OH and phenol-OD are studied in carbon tetrachloride solution. The bandwidth of the v(OH) and v(OD) stretching vibrations increases with the vibrational quantum number in contrast to results obtained by nonresonant ionization spectroscopy (S.I. The electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between [60]fullerene and three methylbenzenes, viz., durene, pentamethylbenzene and hexamethylbenzene has been studied in carbon tetrachloride medium at a number of temperatures. It has been found that these methylbenzenes form stable 1:1 EDA complexes with [60]fullerene. Charge transfer (CT) absorption bands of the complexes in the 410-460 nm region are more intense than the usual 420-700 nm absorption band of C60. Some europium complexes with pyrazolone derivatives and 1,10-phenanthroline were synthesized and characterized. The europium ion was found to coordinate to O atoms of the pyrazolone derivatives and to N atoms of 1,10-phenanthroline. A strongly ligand-localized UV absorption leads to the europium-centered emissions between 580 and 750 nm which were assigned as the 5D0-->7F0,1,2,3,4 and 5D1-->7F3,4 transitions. The concentration of atmospheric pollutants, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, were monitored by passive sampler with spectrophotometric determination method. The results were compared with active sampling method. It was found that the two methods got the same results. The adsorption of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide by sorbent-saturated filter paper was also studied.

A model which takes into account both stray light and polychromatic light was used to predict and evaluate linearity in on-capillary detection in capillary electrophoresis (CE). According to the model the stray light is the major factor which determines linearity under typical CE operating conditions. Cholic acid in man-made bezoar can be determined by the suggested first order derivative spectrometric method. The peak amplitude within 310-290 nm is independent of the other components and only varies linearly with cholic acid concentration. The method is simple and accurate with good reproducibility.

Simultaneous infections with different Legionella spp. have rarely been described in the literature. We now report on seven sporadic cases of legionellosis of which three were simultaneous infections caused by multiple Legionella pneumophila serogroups. Four different legionellae were involved. L. pneumophila serogroup 1, two different types of L. pneumophila serogroup 4, and L. pneumophila serogroup 10 have been identified simultaneously from a lung tissue specimen of one patient. A novel approach for the production of [125I]amatoxin and anti-amanitin is described. The antigen and the starting material for Bolton Hunter iodination is prepared by periodic acid oxidation of the gamma-delta-dihydroxy-isoleucine side chain of alpha-amanitin followed by reductive amination. A colorimetric method for quantitative determination of 6 C-2 unsubstituted phenothiazine derivatives is described. The method is based on reaction of phenothiazine derivative with morpholine and N-bromosuccinimide reagents in aqueous methanol at 60 degrees C to produce a blue color. Beer's law is obeyed in a wide range of concentrations for all 6 compounds at 660 nm. Optimum analytical conditions were determined and the produced color is stable for at least 24 h.
