UNLABELLED: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is the second most common form of dementia, after Alzheimer's disease (AD). Subjects with DLB remain under-diagnosed, especially in the early stage of the disease, when they can show subtle neurocognitive disorders similar to subjects with AD. In order to refine the differential diagnosis between these two neurodegenerative diseases and to improve patients' care, our speech therapy study aimed to analyze their ability to tell a story by producing a narrative discourse (ND).
METHOD: 25 participants with DLB and 12 participants with AD underwent a ND

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and speech and language disorder (SLD) are distinct neurodevelopmental conditions, yet both share overlapping communication impairments. Forkhead box P2 (FOXP2), a key transcription factor involved in speech and language development, harbors pathogenic mutations such as R553H, which cause SLD and have been suggested to contribute to aspects of ASD-related phenotypes. This review synthesizes insights from animal models to explore the molecular mechanisms by which Foxp2 mutations disrupt the development of the cerebral cortex, thalamus, and enteric nervous system.

Purpose Traumatic brain injury (TBI) impacts millions of children each year, with those between birth and 4 years of age being 1 of the highest incidence groups. To address gaps in service provision specifically for children with mild TBI (mTBI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released guidelines for providers. Method The goal of this commentary is to deliver viewpoints on the application of the CDC guidelines directly to speech-language pathology clinical practice, with special attention paid to assessment, symptom monitoring, and intervention using a family-cen…

BACKGROUND: Phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination, important factors in acquiring spoken and written language, have been evaluated in juvenile speech therapy school students. The results have been correlated with the results of a school achievement test. The following questions were of interest: Do students in the lower verbal skill segment show pathological phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination skills? Do the results of the school achievement test differ from the results by students visiting German "Hauptschule"? How does phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination performance cor

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this survey was to determine the effects of a dementia diagnosis on dysphagia management by speech-language pathologists (SLP).
METHODS: A survey of SLPs interested and/or working with individuals with dysphagia was conducted via a website. The SLPs viewed two written cases of patients with dysphagia, one with dementia and one without dementia. Both cases included a video capture of the patients' swallows. SLPs answered specific questions related to each case and video.
RESULTS: Frequency counts, McNemar's Test, and descriptive analysis of responses showed t

PURPOSE: To determine how well an institutionally developed nurse dysphagia screening tool correctly identified the presence (sensitivity) or absence (specificity) of dysphagia in patients following acute stroke.
METHODS: A method-comparison design was used to compare results of the Nurse Dysphagia Screen to the dysphagia evaluation by a speech and language pathologist (SLP). Each newly diagnosed participant served as his or her control, with both dysphagia evaluations (nurse, SLP) occurring within 2 hours of each other. Sensitivity and specificity of the Nurse Dysphagia Screen was calculated

The setting, course, and results of a counseling and a therapeutic group for relatives of chronic aphasic patients are reviewed. Generally, providing and discussing information on the illness, its consequences, and medical and social services are greatly appreciated by group members. Counseling and group psychotherapy, as conducted by us, did not result in measurable improvements of relatives' perceptions of personal, social, and familial burdens. We assume, however, that group therapy does lead to more realistic attitudes toward burdensome and severely straining situations and may help with c

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the concurrent validity of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) in a Korean population. We investigated the feasibility of its cutoff values and diagnostic accuracy in discriminating between normal and dysphonic voices.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,524 native Korean subjects with normal voices (n = 113) and with voice disorders (n = 1,411) were asked to speak and sustain the vowel "a" and to read the Korean text "Walk" aloud. A 2-second mid-speech portion of the sustained vowel sound and two sentences (with 26 syllables) were edite

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide intervention for communication challenges and swallowing disorders (dysphagia) that are common in cases of severe burns because of ventilator use, prolonged or multiple intubations, and tracheostomy tubes. To identify current inclusion of SLP services in burn care management, a survey was sent to 139 burn units across the United States. Results revealed limited inclusion of SLPs in burn care despite pertinent areas of SLP expertise. Education of burn care teams on the benefits of SLP inclusion is needed. Potential benefits in pain and medical managem

The velopharyngeal (VP) port separates the nasopharynx from the oropharynx and is bordered by the velum, lateral pharyngeal walls, and posterior pharyngeal wall. Velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) is the inability to achieve proper closure of the VP port, affecting speech and swallowing. This 3-part series provides a comprehensive discussion on (1) the anatomy and physiology of the velopharyngeal mechanism; (2) fundamental speech terminology and principles of perceptual speech assessment for VPD; and (3) techniques for objective evaluation of the VP port and surgical decision-making process. BACKGROUND: Lingual, labial and buccal weakness (LLBW) is a widespread consequence of several neurological insults. LLBW impact on oral motor functions such as speech production and swallowing is well documented in the literature. Therefore, it is important for the speech-language pathologists to have access to evidence-based approaches for treatment. Thus, it is imperative that the speech-language pathology field search for effective treatment approaches and explore new treatment modalities that can improve therapy outcomes. One relatively new modality in this field is neuromuscular electrica…
