Spinal meningeal melanocytomas are rare lesions that are histologically benign and can behave aggressively, with local infiltration. The authors present their experience with intramedullary spinal cord melanocytomas consisting of 3 cases, which represents the second largest series in the literature. A retrospective chart review was performed following identification of all spinal melanocytomas treated at the author's institution, based on information obtained from a neuropathology database. The charts were reviewed for patient demographics, surgical procedure, clinical outcome, and long-term t…

The implantation of exogenous cells or tissues has been a popular and successful strategy to overcome physical discontinuity and support axon growth in experimental models of spinal cord injury (SCI). Cellular therapies exhibit a multifarious potential for SCI restoration, providing not only a supportive substrate upon which axons can traverse the injury site, but also reducing progressive tissue damage and scarring, facilitating remyelination repair, and acting as a source for replacing and re-establishing lost neural tissue and its circuitry. The past two decades of research into cell therap…

Neonatal spinal cord injury can occur in utero, as well as after either a difficult delivery or a nontraumatic delivery. Spinal cord injury can also be related to invasive nursery procedures or underlying neonatal pathology. Early clinical signs of spinal cord injury that has occurred in utero or at delivery includes severe respiratory compromise and profound hypotonia. Knowledge of risk factors and awareness of symptoms is required for early recognition and appropriate treatment. This article reviews the embryological development of the spinal column highlighting mechanisms of injury and iden…

OBJECT: Lipomas of the spinal cord are often a component of spinal dysraphic states. Nondysraphic intramedullary spinal cord lipomas are rare, and their presentation, in the form of gradually worsening myelopathy, is nonspecific. The authors report on the methods used for diagnosis and treatment in patients presenting with these lesions at their institution, and they review the relevant literature.
METHODS: The authors treated 14 patients who presented with intramedullary lipomas over a period of 12 years. None of these patients had segmentation anomaly or dysraphism of the spine, or any hind…

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury is one of the most tragic disabilities, because of its sequelae. Incidence ranges between 9 and 53 cases per million inhabitants. Injuries due to non-traumatic causes account for a significant number of cases but they have not been studied in depth. Our objective was to conduct a descriptive study of osteoarticular-type non-traumatic spinal cord injuries in our centre.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We carried out a retrospective study of the medical records of patients referred to our centre because of non-traumatic, degenerative spinal cord injury between 1998 and 20…

Differential diagnosis of non-traumatic, acute transverse spinal cord syndromes should cover compressive myelopathy (mostly hematomas or tumors), inflammatory myelitis and vascular myelopathies. Since acute pathologies of the spinal cord primarily result in flaccid para- or tetraparesis accompanied by areflexia or hyporeflexia (spinal shock), acute polyradiculoneuritis and the cauda equina syndrome must also be weighed into the differential diagnosis. Paraplegia may ultimately also be of psychogenic origin. The clinical picture is characterized by the rapidity of progression, the possible invo…

Acquired spinal cord diseases in ruminants result most commonly from infectious, traumatic, metabolic/nutritional, or toxic causes and rarely from neoplasia. Clinical signs of spinal cord disease depend on the neuroanatomic location of the lesion. Acquired spinal cord diseases including vertebral osteomyelitis/spinal abscess, cauda-equina disease, enzootic ataxia, lymphosarcoma, polyradiculoneuritis, and degenerative myeloencephalopathy are discussed. Acquired peripheral nerve disease in cattle most often is a result of injury, and most commonly only one limb is involved. Peripheral nerve injur…

PATIENT: We report on an unusual case of a recurrent and progressive spinal pilocytic astrocytoma with metastatic spreading to the hypothalamus in a 14-year-old boy.
TREATMENT AND RESULTS: The patient underwent resection of an intramedullary atypical pilocytic astrocytoma classified as WHO grade II at the level of Th11/12 in 1997 and received local photon beam irradiation. Three years later, a second operation was necessary for a recurrent tumour at the same level. Seventeen months later, a second recurrent tumour with spinal seeding as well as an intracranial tumour in the third ventricle an

Osteoporotic vertebral fractures with neurologic complications are rarely reported in the literature. We report a case of a 66-year-old woman who developed an osteoporotic fracture of T6 followed one month later by spinal cord compression without aseptic vertebral osteonecrosis. Diagnosis is based on magnetic resonance imaging and examination of vertebral biopsy specimens. After reviewing the literature, we stress some features: the osteoporotic vertebral fractures does not have any particularity compared to the uncomplicated form; the neurological complication occurs progressively and belated…

UNLABELLED: This self-directed learning module highlights rehabilitation outcomes in spinal cord injury (SCI). It is part of the chapter on SCI medicine in the Self-Directed Physiatric Education Program for practitioners and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This article focuses on the multiple concerns for functional recovery after SCI, chiefly, the potential for ambulation, upper-extremity recovery, options for functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS), sexual activity, and optimal outcome after a metastatic lesion. Motor incomplete patients have a better prognosis for ambul…

The AAEV (American Association of Extracellular Vesicles) Annual Meeting at the John P. McGovern Commons in Houston, TX convened over 300 leading researchers, clinicians, and industry experts from around the world to advance the rapidly evolving field of extracellular vesicle (EV) science. EVs, nanoscale lipid-bound particles released by all prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, have emerged as crucial mediators of intercellular communication, trans- porting proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids that influence a wide spectrum of physiological and pathological processes. Their involvement in immune m
