Fixed cutaneous sporotrichosis in an adolescent boy: a case report.

We present a case of an adolescent boy with a 3-week history of 3 painless purulent erythematous ulcers with raised hyperkeratotic borders associated with regional lymphadenopathy on the medial aspect of the right antecubital fossa. There were no known initiating factors and no other significant associated signs or symptoms. The patient initially was treated with antibiotics, with no improvement. Bacterial and fungal cultures of biopsy specimens demonstrated the presence of Sporothrix schenckii and confirmed the diagnosis of sporotrichosis. Itraconazole was initiated with an appropriate respon…

A case of sporotrichosis treated with itraconazole.

Lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis is caused by Sporothrix schenckii, a dimorphic fungus commonly existing on decaying plants and in the soil. The fungus has a worldwide distribution but is more prevalent in temperate and tropical climates. Infection may result from traumatic inoculation of contaminated material such as soil, hay, moss, plant debris, splinters, thorns and barbs. Inoculation is also possible through some animal scratches and bites. We describe a typical case of lymphocutaneous sporotrichosis, which was confirmed by clinical, histological and microbiological features. The patient wa…

Sporotrichoid infection. Two cases.

The Authors describe two cases of Sporotrichoid infection characterized by the onset, above previous skin accidental injuries, of a papulo-pustular lesion, with further development of centripetal satellite lesions similar to the first one. A precise etiological definition was possible only after the cultural,l mycological and bacteriological examination of biopsy material. The very similar clinical features of the two cases were due to different etiological pathogens: Sporothrix schenckii in one case and Mycobacterium marinum in the other case. A complete healing of the skin lesion was obtaine…

Systematic Review of Mammalian Models for Experimental Sporotrichosis: Pathogenesis, Methodological Variables, and Ethical Considerations.

In this review, we aimed to condense data on mammalian models of experimental infection with species of the genus Sporothrix, the causal agent of sporotrichosis, using the PRISMA methodology to search in three electronic databases: PubMed, Lilacs, and Web of Science. We analyzed the mammals used and the criteria that determine the course of the infection, including inoculum size and route of inoculation, the host's immune status, and the fungal species employed, as well as information on ethical principles and criteria for determining the pathogenicity/virulence of the fungal species used, and…

[A case of primary pulmonary sporotrichosis].

We report the first case of primary pulmonary sporotrichosis in Japan. A 53-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for further examinatio … gen, percutaneous lung aspiration (PLA) was performed. The PLA sample yielded a positive culture of Sporothrix shenckii. After the diagnosis, S. schenckii was also cultured from sputa. A sporothrix skin test and yeast agglutination test for S. schenckii were positive. In the absence of a history for skin lesion, the patient was diagnosed as a primary pulmona …

Sporotrichosis in Iran.

This report describes a 23 year-old male florist gardener diagnosed with subcutaneous sporotrichosis caused by the dimorphic pathogenic soil fungus Sporothrix schenckii. The patient had several small skin lesions over the left upper arm with ascendant chains of enlarged lymph nodes.Sporothrix schenckii was detected from clinical samples by direct microscopy and culture and its ability to switch from mould to yeast form at 37 degrees C. The patient was successfully treated with long-term potassium iodide and advised to wear gloves and long sleeves when handling any kind of plant material.

Sporotrichosis in a Renal Transplant Patient: A Rare Case Report with a Review of the Literature.

Sporotrichosis is a rare form of subacute and chronic fungal infection in renal transplant recipients caused by the ubiquitous fungus Sporothrix schenckii. It is usually described in renal allograft recipients who have not been treated with antifungal prophylaxis. We report a rare case of cutaneous sporotrichosis in a 39-year-old renal allograft recipient already on antifungal prophylaxis, who presented with skin lesions. The diagnosis was made from a skin biopsy. The patient had increased tacrolimus levels after starting treatment with itraconazole, which was later changed to terbinafine and …

Cavitary Pulmonary Sporotrichosis: Case Report and Literature Review.

A case of cavitary pulmonary sporotrichosis without mucocutaneous involvement caused by Sporothrix schenckii is reported in a sexagenarian woman with a long smoking history. The patient was hospitalized for septic shock with multiorgan failure from a respiratory focus. The diagnosis was delayed due to the fungal etiological agent was not initially considered in the differential diagnosis. A good clinical and radiological evolution was obtained with the antifungal therapy. Occasional cases of primary pulmonary sporotrichosis have been reported in the literature. Due to its low incidence, this i…

Unusual clinical presentation of sporotrichosis in three members of one family.

INTRODUCTION: Sporotrichosis is a mycosis caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix spp., and the primary mode of transmission is traumatic inoculation of fungus conidia from plants and other organic matter. METHODS: Sporotrichosis was established in a cat and in three members of one family from a rural area, by fungal growth in culture. RESULTS: The cutaneous lesions developed on the lower buttock and limbs with no report of any injury. CONCLUSION: Although sporotrichosis should be considered for differential diagnosis in people working with soil and plants, cases of chronic lesions on ski…

Sporotrichoid lymphocutaneous infections: etiology, diagnosis and therapy.

Sporotrichoid lymphocutaneous infection is an uncommon syndrome that is often misdiagnosed and improperly treated. Of the several hundred cases seen each year in the United States, the majority are caused by Sporothrix schenckii, Nocardia brasiliensis, Mycobacterium marinum or Leishmania brasiliensis. The "sporotrichoid" disease begins at a site of distal inoculation and leads to the development of nodular lymphangitis. Systemic symptoms are characteristically absent. By recognizing the distinct pattern of nodular lymphangitis and focusing on the diverse but limited etiologies, the physician c…

Sporotrichosis, a hazard of outdoor work or recreation. Three illustrative cases.

Persons whose work or recreation exposes them to minor trauma out of doors are at risk for sporotrichosis. The disease is generally indolent, with the lymphocutaneous form being by far the commonest. Extracutaneous disease may affect the bones or joints, lungs, or other foci. Isolation of the fungus Sporothrix schenckii from involved tissue establishes the diagnosis. Saturated solution of potassium iodide is the first-line treatment of lymphocutaneous disease. Intravenous amphotericin B is used for lesions not responding to saturated solution of potassium iodide and, occasionally, excision of …

Primary pulmonary sporotrichosis.

A 34-year-old alcoholic and drug addict developed cavitary pulmonary sporotrichosis that progressed slowly during 6 years. Pulmonary resection and pre- and postoperative therapy with amphotericin B were associated with prompt clinical improvement with no evidence of relapse during a 2-year follow-up. Histologic examination of lung revealed granulomatous inflammation with organisms consistent with Sporothrix schenckii, and interstitial talc (magnesium silicate) granulomas. The latter finding was consistent with the history of intravenous drug abuse. Although the presence of silicates in lung en…

Co-infection with feline retrovirus is related to changes in immunological parameters of cats with sporotrichosis.

Feline sporotrichosis due to Sporothrix brasiliensis is frequently severe and often correlated to zoonotic transmission. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) cause immunodeficiency in cats; no association has been identified with critical cases of sporotrichosis. Moreover, the cytokine profile in Sporothrix-infected cats and a potential impact of retrovirus co-infections on their immunity is unknown. This study assessed immunological parameters in cats with sporotrichosis with and without FIV or FeLV co-infection. FeLV infection was detected by antigen ELISA and…
