Repetitive and restricted behaviors, habits, body-focused repetitive behaviors, and motor stereotypies.

Movement disorder definitions that include the clinical characteristics "sudden, rapid, repetitive, brief, and involuntary" are not limited to motor tic disorders. Hence, it is essential that caregivers be aware of other relatively common conditions that could be confused with the diagnosis of tics. Included in this differential are entities such as repetitive and restricted behaviors (RRBs), habits, body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), and motor stereotypies. The importance of separation of these individual conditions is further emphasized by the recognition that they can be coexisting

Sigma1 receptor antagonists determine the behavioral pattern of the methamphetamine-induced stereotypy in mice.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of sigma receptor antagonists on methamphetamine (METH)-induced stereotypy have not been examined. We examined the effects of sigma antagonists on METH-induced stereotypy in mice. RESULTS: The administration of METH (10 mg/kg) to male ddY mice induced stereotyped behavior consisting of biting (90.1%), sniffing (4.2%), head bobbing (4.1%), and circling (1.7%) during an observation period of 1 h. Pretreatment of the mice with BMY 14802 (alpha-(4-fluorophenyl)-4-(5-fluoro-2-pyrimidinyl)-1-piperazinebutanol; 1, 5, and 10 mg/kg), a non-specific sigma receptor antagonist, sig

Stereotypy in young children with autism and typically developing children.

Although stereotypy is one of the key diagnostic features of autism, few studies have compared stereotypic behavior in children with autism and typically developing children. The present study employed direct observational measurement methods to assess levels of stereotypic behavior in 2-, 3- and 4-year-old children with autism or pervasive developmental disorder - not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and age-matched typically developing peers. Thirty children with autism or PDD-NOS and 30 typically developing children participated. Each child's performance of several early learning and play skil

Effect of environmental enrichment devices on behaviors of single- and group-housed squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Squirrel monkeys display an interest in novel places, habituate to new situations, and spend most of their daily activity in the wild in large groups engaging in feeding behaviors over a broad area. Captivity limits these behaviors and consequently may disrupt normal social organizations. In captivity, squirrel monkeys may exhibit stereotypical behaviors that are believed to indicate decreased psychologic well-being. When a monkey's behavior can be made to approach that seen in the wild, and stereotypical behaviors are minimal, it is assumed that psychologic well-being is adequate. Environment

Shank3 deficiency elicits autistic-like behaviors by activating p38α in hypothalamic AgRP neurons.

BACKGROUND: SH3 and multiple ankyrin repeat domains protein 3 (SHANK3) monogenic mutations or deficiency leads to excessive stereotypic behavior and impaired sociability, which frequently occur in autism cases. To date, the underlying mechanisms by which Shank3 mutation or deletion causes autism and the part of the brain in which Shank3 mutation leads to the autistic phenotypes are understudied. The hypothalamus is associated with stereotypic behavior and sociability. p38α, a mediator of inflammatory responses in the brain, has been postulated as a potential gene for certain cases of autism oc

B-cell receptor immunoglobulin stereotypy in chronic lymphocytic leukemia: Key to understanding disease biology and stratifying patients.

Sequence convergence, otherwise stereotypy, of B-cell receptor immunoglobulin (BcR IG) from unrelated patients is a distinctive feature of the IG gene repertoire in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) whereby patients expressing a particular BcR IG archetype are classified into groups termed stereotyped subsets. From a biological perspective, the fact that a considerable fraction (∼41%) of patients with CLL express (quasi)identical or stereotyped BcR IG underscores the key role of antigen selection in the natural history of CLL. From a clinical perspective, at odds with the pronounced heterogen

The Effects of Activating Gender-Related Social Roles on Financial Risk-Taking.

Previous studies observed differences between men and women in terms of their financial risk-taking. However, these differences may stem not only from the gender of the decision-maker but also from other factors, such as stereotypical gender social roles. Media content exposes both men and women to stereotypical portrayals of their gender, and this might temporarily activate thoughts related to their social roles. A question arises whether such activation might impact the way people make risky financial decisions. The present experimental study investigated whether temporarily activated gender

Interacting with sexist men triggers social identity threat among female engineers.

Social identity threat is the notion that one of a person's many social identities may be at risk of being devalued in a particular context (C. M. Steele, S. J. Spencer, & J. Aronson, 2002). The authors suggest that in domains in which women are already negatively stereotyped, interacting with a sexist man can trigger social identity threat, undermining women's performance. In Study 1, male engineering students who scored highly on a subtle measure of sexism behaved in a dominant and sexually interested way toward an ostensible female classmate. In Studies 2 and 3, female engineering students

Influence of chemical stimulation of central dopaminergic system on the open field behaviour of rats.

Influence of some substances known to selectively modify the brain levels of dopamine, was studied on the Open Field behaviour in rats. Of the agents studied, I-dopa, benztropine and amantadine showed some similarity with amphetamine in exhibiting a high degree of complex stereotyped behaviour in rats. The complex stereotyped behaviour due to amphetamine and the similarity shown by these antiparkinsonian agents has been explained on the basis of brain dopamine levels. On the other hand apomorphine depressed the Open Field behaviour and produced a typical stereotyped biting in rats. Since 6-hyd

Ideology: Psychological Similarities and Differences Across the Ideological Spectrum Reexamined.

A key debate in the psychology of ideology is whether leftists and rightists are psychologically similar or different. A long-standing view … tibility to misinformation), and their interpersonal perceptions and behaviors (empathy, prejudice, stereotyping, and violence). Our review paints a nuanced picture: People across the ideological divide are much more similar than scholars sometimes appreciate. And yet, they differ-to varying degrees-in their personality, values, and (perhaps most importantly) …

Different selection pressures give rise to distinct ethnic phenomena : a functionalist framework with illustrations from the Peruvian Altiplano.

Many accounts of ethnic phenomena imply that processes such as stereotyping, essentialism, ethnocentrism, and intergroup hostility stem from a unitary adaptation for reasoning about groups. This is partly justified by the phenomena's co-occurrence in correlational studies. Here we argue that these behaviors are better modeled as functionally independent adaptations that arose in response to different selection pressures throughout human evolution. As such, different mechanisms may be triggered by different group boundaries within a single society. We illustrate this functionalist framework usi…

Measuring stigma among health care and social service providers: The HIV/AIDS Provider Stigma Inventory.

Initial validation of the HIV/AIDS Provider Stigma Inventory (HAPSI), piloted on a sample of 174 nursing students, supported the psychometric qualities of a suite of measures capturing tendencies to stigmatize and discriminate against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA). Derived from social psychology and mindfulness theories, separate scales addressing awareness, acceptance, and action were designed to include notions of labeling, stereotyping, outgrouping, and discriminating. These were enhanced to capture differences associated with personal characteristics of PLHA that trigger secondary sti…

Relationships between psychiatric conditions and behavior problems among adults with mental retardation.

Adults with predominantly severe and profound mental retardation (N = 180) who lived in a developmental center were assessed with the Behavior Problems Inventory and the Diagnostic Assessment for the Severely Handicapped-II. Individuals with self-injurious, stereotyped, or aggressive/destructive behavior had generally higher psychopathology scores than individuals without, and the presence of behavior problems increased the likelihood of almost all psychiatric conditions up to three-fold. Factor analysis revealed that behavior problems tended to be associated with psychiatric conditions conven

Song motor control organizes acoustic patterns on two levels in Bengalese finches (Lonchura striata var. domestica).

Based on statistical analyses of song sequences, Bengalese finch (Lonchura striata var. domestica) songs do not show unvarying motif repetition as has been found in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Instead, there are variations of partially stereotyped sequences of song syllables. Although these stereotyped sequences consist of multiple syllables, in most cases these syllables occur together. To examine whether such structures really exist as a vocal production unit, we subjected singing birds to a light flash and determined when the stimulus stopped the songs. When light interruptions wer

The bombesin/gastrin releasing peptide receptor antagonist RC-3095 blocks apomorphine but not MK-801-induced stereotypy in mice.

Bombesin (BN)-like peptides might be involved in the pathogenesis of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. Stereotyped behaviors induced by the dopamine receptor agonist apomorphine or the N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate receptor antagonist dizocilpine (MK-801) in rodents have been proposed as animal models of schizophrenic psychosis. In the present study we evaluated the effects of the BN/gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRP) antagonist (D-Tpi6, Leu13 psi[CH2NH]-Leu14) bombesin (6-14) (RC-3095) on apomorphine and MK-801-induced stereotyped behavior in mice. Differentiating the potential of continuum beliefs to reduce the public stigma of schizophrenia, depression, and alcohol dependence: associations with illness recognition and treatment recommendations.

PURPOSE: Promoting continuum beliefs has been discussed as a strategy for stigma reduction. The current study examines associations of continuum beliefs with stigma aspects (stereotypes, emotions, and social distance) and mental health literacy (illness recognition and treatment recommendations). METHODS: In 2011, a sample of the German population (N = 3,642) completed a vignette-based interview on attitudes regarding schizophrenia, depression, or alcohol dependence. Logistic regression analyses were performed and predicted probabilities were used to calculate prevalence estimates and depict

Estrogen and opioids interact to modulate the locomotor response to cocaine in the female rat.

Estrogen is known to modulate the behavioral response to cocaine; however the mechanisms by which this is accomplished is unknown. In this study we examine one possible candidate, the endogenous opioid system. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were ovariectomized (OVX), half received Silastic implants with estradiol benzoate (OVX-EB), the other half received empty implants (OVX). After 1 week, spontaneous locomotor and stereotyped activity was measured for 60 min using an automated system. On day 2, locomotor activity was recorded for 30 min. Rats were injected with saline (SAL) or naloxone (NAL) (2 m

Components of identity expression in problem and non-problem gamblers.

Few studies have examined whether specific aspects of group identification predict problematic and non-problematic addictive behaviours and none have focused on gambling. Applying Leach et al.'s (2008) hierarchical model of in-group identification, we tested the associations between components of self-investment (satisfaction, solidarity, and centrality) and components of self-definition (individual self-stereotyping, in-group homogeneity) on distinguishing between problem and non-problem gambling (n = 10,157) and on the severity of problematic gambling behaviour (n = 2,568). Results showed th…
