Forty-three patients with erysipelas and 10 donors were examined using chemiluminescent analysis in the presence of latex and staphylococcal reagent containing protein A. Staphylococcal protein A proved to be a more potent activator of oxygen metabolites than latex. Heterogeneity of chemiluminescent response of leukocytes stimulated by different agents makes it possible to assess the functional reserve of neutrophils and differentiate between the hyper-, normo-, and hyporeactive forms of erysipelas.

Removal of antral mucosa obviously reduced the sensitivity of glandulocytes to pentagastrin in dogs with Basov-Pavlov fistulae. Activation of the endocrinal cells of the antral mucosa after fundal and antral parts separation exerted an opposite effect. The data obtained suggest that, along with gastrin, there is another hormonal factor facilitating the action of gastrin in the antral mucosa.

The chlorpromazine, a calmodulin inhibitor, has been studied for its action on the contraction force and calcium current of the frog atrium fibres. Chlorpromazine (10(-5) mol/l) was observed to induce maximal increase of the contraction force that 30 min after the agent action amounted to (47.3 + 9.3)% of control. Comparative electron microscopic, electrophysiological and biochemical studies of thioridazine influence on lipid peroxidation in vivo (rats, rabbits) and in vitro (model systems) were performed. It was shown that thioridazine retinopathy was not followed by an increase in lipid peroxidation and antioxidant (dibunol) failed to protect the retina against the destructive action of thioridazine. Moreover, thioridazine inhibited lipid peroxidation in model system.

In nine 20-24-week-old spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and twelve age-matched normotensive control rats (NCR) carotid body chemoreceptors were stimulated by acid saline injected into the common carotid artery. The animals were paralyzed and atropinized. The reflex blood pressure rise in NCR (27 +/- 2 mm Hg) was significantly greater than in SHR (4 +/- 2 mm Hg). We conclude that the sensitivity of the vascular-sympathetic component of the arterial chemoreflex is decreased in adult SHR.

Metoclopramide (MP), a dopamine antagonist, stimulates secretion of aldosterone by a mechanism which has not been defined. We examined a potential role for either the kidney or the pituitary to mediate MPs effect on aldosterone secretion. Responses to MP administered i.v. were measured in six anephric and six hypopituitary patients as well as in six normal subjects. MP increased the plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) in normal subjects in a fashion similar to what had previously been reported. MP produced no increase in plasma levels of renin activity (PRA), cortisol, potassium, or sodium.
