Effect of Ice Slush on Reducing the Oculocardiac Reflex During Strabismus Surgery.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore whether ice slush (IS) causing local hypothermia can effectively inhibit the oculocardiac reflex (OCR) during strabismus surgery. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blind study included 58 patients with concomitant strabismus scheduled for lateral rectus (LR) recession under general anesthesia. Patients were randomly allocated to receive IS (IS group) or standard treatment (control group) with sterile saline at room temperature before surgery. OCR was defined as a sudden decrease in heart rate (HR) of >15% from baseline. If one incid…

Long-term outcomes of adjustable strabismus surgery at a Pakistani university hospital.

PURPOSE: Strabismus, whether congenital or acquired, is a common visual and cosmetic problem, especially for the young. Adjustable suture strabismus surgery is not in vogue in our country. This technique gives the surgeon a second attempt to provide a better outcome for the patients. Our objective was to assess the long-term success of adjustable strabismus surgery in terms of postoperative alignment. METHODS: We carried out a prospective study utilizing the fornix approach for adjustable strabismus surgery, in mainly horizontal, but also vertical strabismus in adults and cooperative children…

Shared decision making and patients satisfaction with strabismus care-a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus is a complex disease that has various treatment approaches each with its own advantages and drawbacks. In this context, shared decisions making (SDM) is a communication process with the provider sharing all the relevant treatment alternatives, all the benefits, and risks of each procedure, while the patient shares all the preferences and values regarding his/her choices. In that way, SDM is a bidirectional process that goes beyond the typical informed consent. Therefore, it is known a little of the extent to which SDM influences the satisfaction with the treatment outcom…

Strabismus Surgery Outcomes and Their Determinants in Patients with Chronic Sixth Nerve Palsy.

PURPOSE: Patients with chronic sixth nerve palsy (CSNP) comprise a heterogeneous population, and the optimal surgical solution remains uncertain. Here, we present the success rate and factors associated with the success of strabismus surgeries for CSNP. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with strabismus due to CSNP operated on between 2015 and 2019 in a tertiary eye hospital in central Saudi Arabia. Surgical success was defined as a horizontal deviation of ≤10 prism diopters (PDs) assessed at least 12 months after surgery. Differences between groups with respect to the…

Altered Brain Structure and Spontaneous Functional Activity in Children With Concomitant Strabismus.

Strabismus occurs in about 2% of children and may result in amblyopia or lazy eyes and loss of depth perception. However, whether/how long-term strabismus shapes the brain structure and functions in children with concomitant strabismus (CS) is still unclear. In this study, a total of 26 patients with CS and 28 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging examination. The cortical thickness and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) were calculated to assess the structural and functional plasticity i…

Acute strabismus in neurological emergencies of childhood: A retrospective, single-centre study.

OBJECTIVES: Acute strabismus (AS) is the most common ocular motility disorder in children. In the emergency setting evaluation, the primary concern is to exclude a potentially dangerous underlying condition, requiring immediate intervention. Our first aim was to describe the epidemiology, clinical features, and underlying causes of AS in a cohort of children presenting to the emergency department (ED). Our second aim was to identify clinical features associated with a significant risk of underlying neurological emergencies (NEs). DESIGN AND SETTING: Clinical records of all patients under 18 y…

Conjunctival incision management for strabismus surgery in the post-corneal neurotization patient.

We report 2 patients who underwent strabismus surgery following corneal neurotization for neurotrophic keratopathy. Strabismus surgery in such cases presents unique challenges because of the potentially complicated motility problems arising from underlying neurologic or orbital processes. We consider the management of conjunctival incisions for strabismus surgery in these patients.
