BACKGROUND: Prazosin is significantly effective to reduce sleep disturbance and trauma nightmare in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); however, results of different studies were evaluated.
OBJECTIVES: The current randomized clinical trial aimed to assess the effects of prazosin on sleep parameters and nightmares among veterans with chronic PTSD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two veterans with chronic war-induced PTSD and distressing nightmares were randomized into prazosin and placebo groups for eight weeks. The main symptoms were qualified using the recurrent distressing d

Despite the recent interest in psychiatric illness in prison, the psychopathology of the Remire-Montjoly prison population remains largely unknown. Subject to significant population movements, French Guiana and its prison houses a very mixed population in which recent history has left a strong mark (earthquake in Haïti, civil war in Suriname, violence related to gold mining population and drug trafficking). These negative life events appear as potential vectors of psychological trauma. Additionally, strong links have been established in the literature between post-traumatic stress disorder (PT

OBJECTIVE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is considered a multidimensional disorder, with distinct symptom clusters including re-experiencing, avoidance/numbing, hyperarousal, and most recently depersonalization/derealization. However, the extent of differing intrinsic network connectivity underlying these symptoms has not been fully investigated. We therefore investigated the degree of association between resting connectivity of the salience (SN), default mode (DMN), and central executive (CEN) networks and PTSD symptom severity.
METHOD: Using resting-state functional MRI data from PT

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterised by symptoms associated with maladaptive fear and stress responses, as well as with social detachment. The neuropeptides oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) have been associated with both regulating fear and neuroendocrine stress responsiveness and social behaviour. However, there is only limited evidence for dysregulated peripheral OT and AVP levels in PTSD patients. The present study aimed to investigate basal salivary OT and AVP levels in trauma-exposed male and female police officers with and without PTSD. Saliva samples were c

Intimate partner violence against women is common in Lebanon and can lead to major health problems. However, the incidence of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in battered women has not been extensively explored in the Lebanese cultural context. The objectives of this study were as follows: (a) to determine the prevalence of PTSD symptoms among women in Lebanon who have been physically abused by their partners, (b) to assess whether the rate of PTSD symptoms varied according to sociodemographic variables, and (c) to reveal other attributes that might be risk factors for develop

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop following exposure to a stressful event of an exceptionally threatening or catastrophic nature. Symptoms experienced by PTSD suffers can include re-experiencing the trauma through intrusive 'flashbacks' and recurrent dreams or nightmares, avoidance of stimuli associated with the stressor, hyperarousal, emotional blunting and an inability to remember aspects of the period of exposure to the stressor. We performed an audit of the treatment of PTSD in patients under the care of the Bedford East Mental Health Team to examine the psychological and p

An original computer technology--a mathematical model and computer programs running under Windows--for the operative assessment of outbreaks of post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) and prediction of their sequelae among victims of terrorist attacks is described. The structure of the mathematical model is described, along with the relationship between the mathematical model and the calculating algorithm for prediction of the development of outbreaks of PTSD. The computer program allowed predictions of the numbers of mental disorders with subsequent behavioral impairment, addictive disorders,

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a well-recognized complication of severe illness. PTSD has been described in patients after multiple trauma, burns, or myocardial infarction with a particularly high incidence in survivors of acute pulmonary failure (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) or septic shock. Many patients with evidence of PTSD after critical illness have been treated in intensive care units (ICUs). Studies in long-term survivors of ICU treatment demonstrated a clear and vivid recall of different categories of traumatic memory such as nightmares, anxiety, respiratory distress

This study examined self-inflicted burns in case series of four patients with chronic combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Those patients were hospitalized in the Burn Unit of the University Hospital of Traumatology in Zagreb because of severe burns and had a premorbid psychiatric history of PTSD. Demographic data and information regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident, burn severity, treatment and outcomes of these patients were collected. The authors have analyzed possible impacts of the sensationalistic way in which media present cases of self-inflicted burning

OBJECTIVE: To investigate post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology in servicemen hospitalized 1942-1952.
METHOD: Hospital files of servicemen (n = 590) were studied and PTSD symptoms in groups, based on service experience, were compared.
RESULTS: Based on their hospital files, 19% of servicemen were classified as having partial PTSD. No full cases of PTSD were identified, due primarily to the small number of recorded avoidance symptoms and the limited information in relation to the stressor criterion. Prisoners of war had the highest reported avoidance and lowest intrusive sympto

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients with comorbid panic disorder (PD) may express additive symptoms of central fear system disturbance. They endorse elevated levels of sleep and nightmare disturbance [Leskin GA, et al., J Psychiatr Res 2002;36:449-452], and demonstrate movement suppression during laboratory sleep [Woodward SH, et al., Sleep 2002;25:681-688]. We estimated respiratory rate and rate variability separately for rapid-eye movement (REM) and non-rapid-eye movement (NREM) sleep. Subjects were 49 Vietnam combat-related PTSD inpatients (11 with comorbid PD and 38 without) and

BACKGROUND: Family studies of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) have given inconsistent results to date. Identifying predisposing factors in PTSD compared to anxiety disorders may help to clarify the classification of PTSD as a diagnostic entity.
METHOD: Retrospective case note study of 87 PTSD patients who participated in an RCT, and 51 PTSD patients and 87 agoraphobics treated routinely in outpatients.
RESULTS: Compared to agoraphobics, PTSD patients had significantly less family history of anxiety disorder but not mental illness in general. They also had significantly less personal hi

A prospective study documenting psychopathology was undertaken in 48 subjects exposed to a range of physical trauma, but whose injuries were of similar severity. No support was found for the DSM-III-R view correlating the severity of the stressor with the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Distress post injury (high scores on the impact of event scale), indicative of difficulty with cognitive assimilation of the traumatic event, was found to be highly predictive of psychiatric morbidity and PTSD at 6 months.

Data are presented from clinical interviews and psychological tests of a helicopter pilot who had survived a helicopter crash. Within a week, the pilot developed severe stress reactions after the crash, dominated by guilt feelings, nightmares and fear of not being able to fly. Helicopter-accident training simulating a helicopter crashing into the water was used as part of the treatment. The therapeutic value and limitations of this type of treatment are discussed. The main benefit seemed to be the extinction of traumatic helplessness and the reestablishment of a positive response-outcome expec
