Simulation-based evaluation of stretching behavior of NiTi wire-knitted implants for reconstructive plastic surgery.

A comprehensive study of the mechanical response of a titanium nickelide (TiNi) wire-knitted implant was conducted through tensile testing and finite element simulation using the Bergström-Boyce hyperelastic model calibrated via MCalibration and solved in ANSYS. The elongation-load curves for both the ribbon tissue scaffold (RTS) and the composite samples consisting of a RTS with biological tissues sprouted therein (RTS/bio-tissue) demonstrated nonlinear superelastic behavior. Under longitudinal tension, the biological tissue and the RTS exhibited similar deformation patterns. An evaluation of

Point-of-View Video Recording Devices in Plastic Surgery: Educational Utility and Medicolegal Documentation Potential.

INTRODUCTION: Operative video supports performance review and education, but consistent surgeon point-of-view (POV) capture in plastic and reconstructive surgery is challenging. We assessed the perceived educational effectiveness of a smart-glasses POV system and documentation/implementation considerations, including medicolegal use. METHODS: De-identified operative segments were recorded using second-generation Meta AI Glasses. Curated videos/stills were shown to consultants, trainees, and medical students, who completed an anonymous questionnaire with optional free-text. RESULTS: Thirty-fi

Distribution of Pathogenic Bacteria and Antimicrobial Resistance After Plastic Surgery of L-Shaped Zygomatic Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: The zygomatic bone forms the prominence of the midface and determines human facial attractiveness. A facial contour with a prominent zygoma causes a disproportion between the midface and the superior-inferior dimensions of the face. This study aimed to retrospectively analyze infections after L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy. METHODS: Between January 2011 and December 2021, after L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy alone or after L-shaped zygomatic osteotomy combined with mandibular angle reduction, microbial strains from patients who underwent relevant surgeries were collected, identified,

Patient Perspective on Preoperative Simulation in Plastic Surgery: A Systematic Review of Patient-Reported Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Preoperative simulation technologies are increasingly utilized in plastic surgery to enhance surgical planning and patient communication. While their technical benefits have been established, the impact on patient-reported outcomes (PROs), in particular satisfaction and perceived accuracy, remain underexplored. This systematic review evaluated the effect of preoperative simulation on patient-reported satisfaction, decision-making, and perceived accuracy in breast and facial aesthetic plastic surgery. METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases up to A

Three decades of hematoma prevention in outpatient plastic surgery: 44,133 consecutive cases and suggested protocol.

Hematoma prevention in outpatient plastic surgery is crucial for patient safety and procedural success. This study evaluates hematoma rates over three decades of outpatient cosmetic procedures and outlines a structured multimodal prevention protocol. We conducted a single-center, retrospective review of 44,133 consecutive cosmetic procedures performed by board-certified plastic surgeons between 1995 and 2024 at an accredited outpatient surgical facility with postoperative nursing observation capabilities. A structured 5-Step Hematoma Prevention Protocol, incorporating tranexamic acid (TXA), wa

The Use of Hemostatic Agents to Decrease Surgical Drain Time in General Plastic Surgery Procedures.

BACKGROUND: Drains can be used in general plastic surgery procedures given the extensive undermining of tissue. Our primary goal was to investigate whether hemostatic agents used during general plastic surgery procedures could decrease drain time length. Secondary goals were to investigate whether hemostatic agents decreased seromas and hematomas. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted including patients undergoing bilateral breast reduction (BBR), abdominoplasty, or panniculectomy. Data collected included use of hemostatic agent (fibrin sealant [EVICEL] or combination powder [HE

The Complication Consult: A Plastic Surgery Perspective on Etiquette, Ownership, and Collegiality After Surgical Complications.

Plastic surgeons are frequently asked to assist when postoperative complications cross service lines and create wound breakdown, soft-tissue necrosis, exposed hardware, infection, dead space, or reconstructive uncertainty. These consultations are often necessary, but their conduct can either preserve trust and collaboration or create a perceived transfer of blame and ownership. This editorial proposes a five-part etiquette framework for complication consultation: candor in naming the problem; courtesy through early, direct, attending-level communication; continuity through ongoing involvement

Plastic surgery involvement in diabetic foot care: A national survey in National Health Service England.

Diabetes is the leading cause of major lower limb amputation in the United Kingdom. The cost of Diabetic Foot Disease in England is estimated to exceed £1 billion annually, driven largely by the treatment of foot ulcers and lower limb amputations. Flap reconstruction has been shown to improve limb salvage. The role of Plastic Surgery remains poorly defined in the major leading guidelines on diabetic foot care. A cross-sectional survey was distributed via email to eligible plastic surgery units in NHS England to ascertain the current landscape of involvement in diabetic foot care. Responses wer

Trends and costs of plastic surgery claims in the NHS: A national analysis (2006-2025).

BACKGROUND: Litigation within surgical specialties continues to impose a growing financial burden on the National Health Services (NHS). Plastic surgery may be especially vulnerable to claims arising from clinical complications and unmet patient expectations. However, national trends in plastic surgery litigation have not been well characterised. To analyse the national trends, causes and costs associated with NHS plastic surgery litigation from 2006/07 to 2024/25 were assessed. METHODS: We analyzed anonymized clinical negligence claim data related to plastic surgery obtained from NHS Resolut
