The autonomic nervous system and hypertension.

Physiological studies have long documented the key role played by the autonomic nervous system in modulating cardiovascular functions and in controlling blood pressure values, both at rest and in response to environmental stimuli. Experimental and clinical investigations have tested the hypothesis that the origin, progression, and outcome of human hypertension are related to dysfunctional autonomic cardiovascular control and especially to abnormal activation of the sympathetic division. Here, we review the recent literature on the adrenergic and vagal abnormalities that have been reported in e

Sympathetic-parasympathetic interaction in health and disease: abnormalities and relevance in heart failure.

Sympathetic-parasympathetic interaction plays a major role in the evolution and outcome of many cardiovascular disorders. Nonetheless, a thorough understanding of this relationship and of its potential implications for prognosis and management still escapes many cardiologists. This article reviews the background of sympathetic-parasympathetic interactions focusing on the best direct evidence available, namely direct neural recordings of the activity of single vagal and sympathetic fibers directed to the heart. It examines indirect but highly reliable markers of this interaction as they can be

Nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy for cervical carcinoma.

With the concept of the improvement of quality of life in the field of surgical oncology, recent studies have questioned the place of radical hysterectomy (RH) in the treatment of cervical carcinoma due to a high rate of long-term postoperative complications involving the pelvic autonomic nerve system. It has been demonstrated that RH frequently causes bladder dysfunction, anorectal mobility disorders, and sexual dissatisfaction in cervical cancer survivors due to surgical trauma involving the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomous innervation of the pelvic organs. Nerve-sp

[Adipose tissue: an innervated endocrine gland].

Until recently, adipose tissue was considered to function as a passive store of triglycerides and therefore of calories. Fascinating research over the past ten years has altered this traditional perspective. Adipose tissue has been shown to produce hormones. Leptin was discovered in 1994; one of its main functions is to adapt the organism to starvation. Sympathetic nerve fibres were shown to innervate adipose tissue and to facilitate lipolysis leading to the release of glycerol and free fatty acids. In addition, parasympathetic innervation of adipose tissue was recently demonstrated, with anab

Innervation of the smooth muscle of the lower urinary tract.

The lower urinary tract in mammals consists of the bladder, a storage organ for urine, and the urethra through which urine is expelled to the outside. In the male the urethra extends outside the body as the penis. The lower urinary tract is innervated by pelvic (parasympathetic) nerves and hypogastric nerves which combine on each side at the pelvic plexus. Fibres pass to the bladder, urethra, genital organs, rectum and blood vessels. In addition to the pelvic and hypogastric nerves there is sacral outflow to skeletal muscle, such as the external sphincters of the urethra and anus, in the puden

Morphological changes in the rabbit submandibular gland after parasympathetic or sympathetic denervation.

Selective denervation was used to obtain further information about the relative roles of the nerves supplying the gland. Parasympathetic denervation soon caused atrophy in both acinar and granular tubule cells, and a substantial reduction in gland wet weight. The secretory cells had several unusual features, and striated duct cells tended to accumulate glycogen. Three to four weeks after pre-ganglionic parasympathectomy, the parenchymal cells were less abnormal but still smaller than in the control, unoperated gland. Thus, parasympathetic impulses are required to maintain normal parenchymal ce

Sympathetic skin response and RR interval variation in patients with cardiac syndrome X.

Sympathetic skin response (SSR) and R-R interval variation (RRIV) are noninvasive electrophysiological tests used in the assessment of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system function, respectively. Cardiac syndrome X (CSX) is usually diagnosed in the presence of typical angina pectoris, a positive response to exercise testing, and normal-appearing coronary angiograms without spasm induced by hyperventilation or ergonovine. Alterations of autonomic nervous system control of cardiac function have been described in CSX. The aim of the study was to investigate autonomic nervous system func…

Selective β2-adrenergic Antagonist Butoxamine Reduces Orthodontic Tooth Movement.

Recently, involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in bone metabolism has attracted attention. β2-Adrenergic receptor (β2-AR) is presented on osteoblastic and osteoclastic cells. We previously demonstrated that β-AR blockers at low dose improve osteoporosis with hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system via β2-AR blocking, while they may have a somewhat inhibitory effect on osteoblastic activity at high doses. In this study, the effects of butoxamine (BUT), a specific β2-AR antagonist, on tooth movement were examined in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) showing osteoporosis with…

Norepinephrine and beta 2-adrenergic receptor stimulation regulate CD4+ T and B lymphocyte function in vitro and in vivo.

Historically, norepinephrine and the sympathetic nervous system have been associated with the "fight or flight" response, and they also contribute to the regulation of autonomic activity within the body, such as cardiovascular function. In addition, evidence over the past 30 years suggests that norepinephrine may also regulate the function of immune cells that protect the body against pathogens. The presence of sympathetic nerve fibers and the release of norepinephrine within lymphoid organs represent a mechanism by which signals from the central nervous system may influence immune cell functi…

Do changes in the coupling between respiratory and sympathetic activities contribute to neurogenic hypertension?

1. It is well known that respiration markedly modulates the sympathetic nervous system. Interactions between pontine and medullary neurons involved in the control of sympathetic and respiratory functions are the main mechanism underlying the respiratory related oscillations in sympathetic nerve activity. 2. Recently, in rats treated with chronic intermittent hypoxia, we demonstrated that alterations in respiratory pattern may drive increased sympathetic outflow and hence the development of systemic hypertension. These experiments, performed in the in situ working heart-brain stem preparation, …

The Sympathetic Innervation of Adipose Tissues: Regulation, Functions, and Plasticity.

The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is a crucial arm of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and includes catecholaminergic neurons that release norepinephrine (NE) onto numerous effector tissues and organs in the body. SNS innervation of both white (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT) is clearly essential for proper tissue function and metabolic control, as decades of surgical, chemical, and genetic denervation studies have demonstrated. Despite our vast knowledge about adipose sympathetic innervation, especially in the context of cold-stimulated browning and thermogenesis that are under SNS …

A neurophysiological evidence of capsaicin-sensitive nerve components innervating interscapular brown adipose tissue.

Neurophysiological basis for the heterogeneity of the nerve components in the brown adipose tissue (BAT) was examined in this experiment. Ef … uration (large spike) and their insensitivity to C6. Since BAT is activated by cold and feeding via sympathetic nervous system, the small spikes seemed to be exhibited by sympathetic fibers. On the other hand, appearance of the large C6-insensitive spikes was strongly attenuated in capsaicin-desensitized rats. Even though the functional link between IBAT and C6 insensitive …

Autonomic dysfunction in children with Hirschsprung's disease.

During embryogenesis, two different transmembrane receptors, Ret and Ednrb, together with their ligands, respective, GDNF and endothelin-3, are involved in the migration and differentiation of enteric ganglion cells, sympathetic neurons and melanocytes from the neural crest. Mutations in these genes have been found in a number of human and murine neurocristopathies, including Hirschsprung's disease. RET and GDNF knockouts suggest that they are involved in a correct autonomic nervous system formation. The aim of this study is the evaluation of the autonomic nervous system in patients with Hirsc

The renin-angiotensin system and cardiovascular autonomic control in aging.

Aging is the greatest independent risk factor for developing hypertension and cardiovascular-related diseases including systolic hypertension, vascular disease, ischemic events, arrhythmias, and heart failure. Age-related cardiovascular risk is associated with dysfunction of peripheral organ systems, such as the heart and vasculature, as well as an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system characterized by increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic neurotransmission. Given the increasing prevalence of aged individuals worldwide, it is critical to better understand mechanisms contribut
