Oculomotor pathology in Menière's disease.

In this study data of voluntary eye movements 62 patients (mean age was 49.6 years) with Meniere's disease and 38 healthy control subjects were examined. Pseudo-random smooth pursuit (PRPEM) tests were conducted with frequency combination of 0.25 and 0.425 Hz. Saccades at constant targets and pseudo-randomly shifting targets were evaluated. In logistic regression analysis constant saccades correctly classified the cases in 57% as saccadic latency discriminating the groups best, latency being longer in Meniere group. In pseudo-random saccades, correct classification was achieved in 75.4% of all

Sex-dependent role of the ventral hippocampus, but not its projection to the medial prefrontal cortex, in a novel operant conflict-driven ethanol choice task.

Sex differences in approach-avoidance decision making with sucrose rewards are well documented, with males exhibiting greater conflict approach behavior and females exhibiting greater conflict avoidance. Consistent with this, previous work has shown that approach bias under conflict in males reliably predicts persistent operant ethanol self-administration under punishment. In females, however, heightened vulnerability to ethanol reward-seeking in the face of aversive consequences is observed, despite their tendency to avoid sucrose reward paired with punishment. We sought to further investigat

Connectome-based predictive modeling indicates dissociable neurocognitive mechanisms for numerical order and magnitude processing in children.

Symbolic numbers contain information about their relative numerical cardinal magnitude (e.g., 2 < 3) and ordinal placement in the count-list (e.g., 1, 2, 3). Previous research has primarily investigated magnitude discrimination skills and their predictive capacity for math achievement, whereas numerical ordering has been less systematically explored. At approximately 10-12 years of age, numerical order processing skills have been observed to surpass cardinal magnitude discrimination skills as the key predictor of arithmetic ability. The neurocognitive mechanisms underlying this shift remain un

Did i do that? Cognitive flexibility and self-agency in patients with obsessivecompulsive disorder.

Self-agency can be understood as the ability to infer causal relationships between actions and sensory events. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) patients with checking compulsions often report lack of "action-completion" sensations, possibly due to an altered sense of agency in these patients. The present study aimed to investigate whether self-agency was related to cognitive flexibility in OCD checkers. In 18 adult OCD checkers and 18 age- and gender-matched healthy controls, cognitive flexibility was assessed with the Intra-Extra Dimensional Set Shift Task (IED). Self-agency attribution wa

Looking for carrots, watching out for sticks: A gaze-contingent approach towards training contextual goal-dependent affective attention flexibility.

The ability to flexibly shift between changing goals is crucial to develop an adaptive response to life stressors. Accordingly, lower affective attention flexibility, i.e. the ability to shift attention flexibly between goals, is associated with low reappraisal ability, high levels of rumination, and lower levels of resilience. However, attempts to manipulate affective attention flexibility with current attention training procedures have seen limited success. In the current study, we tested a novel attention flexibility training paradigm using eye-tracking, wherein dysphoric participants had t

Phonetic accommodation depends on processing conditions: evidence for task-dependent frequency effects.

This study investigates how lexical frequency, behavioural task, and gender shape phonetic accommodation, focusing on speakers' adoption of an alternative pronunciation variant of the German adjectival suffix -ig. Partially overlapping groups of 30-31 native speakers of German completed two experimental tasks: a shadowing task involving immediate repetition of the same target adjective, and an interaction task based on question-answer exchanges in which the perceived and produced -ig adjectives were different lexical items but belonged to the same lexical-frequency category. Lexical frequency

Influence of task and sex on push-off mechanics and stability control strategies during elite curling delivery.

This study investigated the biomechanical mechanisms of push-off mechanics and dynamic stability control strategies in elite curlers across various delivery tasks, while examining the modulating effect of sex. Twenty elite curlers (10 males, 10 females) participated. A 3D motion capture system and a plantar pressure system were used for synchronized acquisition of kinematic and plantar loading data during Draw, Guard, and Take-out tasks. Joint angular velocities and Center of Mass (CoM) trajectories were quantified using OpenSim musculoskeletal modeling. Data were analyzed via 2 × 3 mixed-desi

Improvements in gait speed and weight shift of persons with traumatic brain injury and vestibular dysfunction using a virtual reality computer-assisted rehabilitation environment.

Many people sustaining a traumatic brain injury experience vestibular pathology requiring physical therapy for treatment. This study measured improvements in gait speed and weight shift for subjects receiving vestibular physical therapy using a Computer-Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN). A 6-session CAREN, 6-session traditional vestibular therapy group was compared with a 12-session CAREN only (0 traditional sessions) therapy group. These two groups were compared to each other and with data from healthy controls performing similar tasks on the CAREN. Those participating in 12 CAREN s

The morphology of cataract and visual performance.

The various effects of cataract on vision are reviewed. The morphological types of senile cataract are classified into three basic categories: cortical spoke, nuclear and posterior subcapsular (PSC). The significant basic effect of cataract on the optical system of the eye is that of light scattering. Forward light scattering (light scattered towards the retina) accounts for reduced contrast sensitivity, for glare and for reduced visual acuity. Other effects of cataract are a myopic shift, a possible astigmatism change, monocular diplopia and polyopia, colour vision shift, reduced light transm

Traditional versus dynamic sitting: Lumbar spine kinematics and pain during computer work and activity guided tasks.

Dynamic sitting may mitigate low back pain during prolonged seated work. The current study compared pelvis and lumbar spine kinematics, pain, and work productivity, in traditional and dynamic sitting. Sixteen participants completed three 20-min blocks of computer work and activity guided tasks in a traditional office chair or backless and multiaxial rotating seat pan while kinematics were measured from accelerometers on the low back. Pain ratings were recorded on a visual analogue scale every 10 min. Similar pelvis and lumbar kinematics emerged when performing computer work in traditional and

The effect of electrical muscle stimulation on intentional binding and explicit sense of agency.

The motivating question for this study is determining whether electrical muscle stimulation (EMS)-induced movements can extend the user's ability without reducing the sense of agency. Moreover, it is crucial to find the timing of the EMS application that is robust against individual differences and environmental changes. Previous studies have reported that the user-specific EMS-application timings, determined through explicit measures of sense of agency, would effectively shorten their reaction time in a push task while maintaining their sense of agency. However, no study has investigated EMS-

Visual liking as sensory valuation.

How the brain computes the hedonic value of sensory objects remains a foundational question in neuroscience. In the visual domain, this question has often been approached through the search for stimulus properties that reliably predict liking, such as symmetry, curvature, order, complexity, and color. Such work has shown that perceptual features contribute to visual preference. Recent evidence, however, strongly suggests that hedonic value cannot be explained by feature encoding alone. Thus, behavioral studies have revealed substantial individual differences in feature sensitivity, effects of

Longitudinal changes in the neural oscillatory dynamics underlying abstract reasoning in children and adolescents.

Fluid reasoning is the ability to problem solve in the absence of prior knowledge and is commonly conceptualized as "non-verbal" intelligence. Importantly, fluid reasoning abilities rapidly develop throughout childhood and adolescence. Although numerous studies have characterized the neural underpinnings of fluid reasoning in adults, there is a paucity of research detailing the developmental trajectory of this neural processing. Herein, we examine longitudinal changes in the neural oscillatory dynamics underlying fluid intelligence in a sample of typically developing youths. A total of 34 part

Case report: cognitive performance in an extreme case of anorexia nervosa with a body mass index of 7.7.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that adult patients with anorexia nervosa display cognitive impairments. These impairments may be caused by illness-related circumstances such as low weight. However, the question is whether there is a cognitive adaptation to enduring undernutrition in anorexia nervosa. To our knowledge, cognitive performance has not been assessed previously in a patient with anorexia nervosa with a body mass index as low as 7.7 kg/m2. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the cognitive profile of a 35-year-old woman with severe and enduring anorexia nervosa who was diagnosed at the age of 10

Attentional effects of gaze shifts are influenced by emotion and spatial frequency, but not in autism.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired gaze following is an important hallmark of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in clinical settings. Yet, ASD subjects perform normally on laboratory tasks involving gaze shifts. We investigated this contradiction, hypothesizing that impaired gaze following in ASDs is not related to basic impairments in attention orienting but to impaired emotion perception and abnormal processing of spatial frequencies (i.e., local and global information). METHOD: We tested 30 high-functioning, school-age children with ASDs and 30 age- and IQ-matched controls on a task involving gaze shifts

Perisaccadic mislocalization in dyslexia.

Evidence from experiments designed to elicit the phenomenon of perisaccadic mislocalization of briefly presented probe stimuli suggests that mechanisms implicated in the planning of a saccade are also implicated in the means by which spatial constancy is maintained across saccades. We postulated that impairments of visual attention observed in dyslexic readers may arise from impairment of mechanisms that also subserve the maintenance of spatial constancy, leading to visual confusion during reading. To test this hypothesis, we compared the performance of adults with dyslexia with that of non-im

Implication of sensorimotor integration in the generation of periodic dystonic myoclonus in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE).

To clarify the mechanism of periodic dystonic myoclonus in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a 22-year-old patient with a clinical diagnosis of SSPE was electrophysiologically investigated. Involuntary movements consisted of generalized dystonic posturing which occurred quasiperiodically once every 4 to 8 seconds. Effects of sensory stimuli and voluntary movements were studied by means of polygraphic recording of surface electromyogram (EMG), scalp electroencephalogram (EEG), and magnetoencephalogram (MEG). EEG showed quasi-periodic, generalized, transient complexes synchronous to ea

Twenty-Four Hour Rest-Activity Rhythm Disturbances and Neural Alterations Associated With Emotion Regulation in Shift Workers.

We examined the neural basis of emotion regulation in shift workers, and the relationships between the neural basis of emotion regulation, mood, sleep disturbance and 24-h rest-activity rhythm (RAR). Fifty-six shift workers (SW) with non-standard shift schedules and 52 controls (CON) participated in this study. They completed self-reported measures of sleep and mood problems, kept a sleep diary, and wore a wrist actigraphy device to assess sleep and 24-h RAR. They underwent one-night polysomnography and were scanned while performing an emotion regulation task. We examined group differences in

Vestibular loss promotes procedural response during a spatial task in rats.

Declarative memory refers to a spatial strategy using numerous sources of sensory input information in which visual and vestibular inputs are assimilated in the hippocampus. In contrast, procedural memory refers to a response strategy based on motor skills and familiar gestures and involves the striatum. Even if vestibular loss impairs hippocampal activity and spatial memory, vestibular-lesioned rats remain able to find food rewards during complex spatial memory task. Since hippocampal lesions induce a switch from declarative memory to procedural memory, we hypothesize that vestibular-lesioned

Intraparietal sulcus activity and functional connectivity supporting spatial working memory manipulation.

The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) is recruited during tasks requiring attention, maintenance and manipulation of information in working memory (WM). While WM tasks often show broad bilateral engagement along the IPS, topographic maps of contralateral (CL) visual space have been identified along the IPS, similar to retinotopic maps in visual cortex. In the present study, we asked how these visuotopic IPS regions are differentially involved in the maintenance and manipulation of spatial information in WM. Visuotopic mapping was performed in 26 participants to define regions of interest along the IP
