Chylopericardium usually occurs secondary to trauma, cardiothoracic surgery, radiation therapy, or neoplasm of the mediastinum. Idiopathic chylopericardium is extremely rare. We report a case of primary chylopericardium in a 79-year-old male patient. Although pericardial window and thoracic duct ligation are the treatment of choice, the patient has been doing well for six months since video-assisted thoracoscopic pericardial window.

We describe a rare case of extrapulmonary hamartoma. A 65-year-old man underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery to obtain a histological diagnosis of a tumor with an irregular shape in the subpleural region of the right apical segment. Thoracoscopy showed a chondromatous tumor in the extrapleural region. The tumor resection was uneventful. Pathology study showed a hamartoma outside the visceral pleura.

A 74-year-old female with lung cancer underwent a right lower lobectomy by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), and suddenly developed hemothorax soon after discharge. The bleeding point was an intercostal artery which faced a stump of the right lower vein divided by a stapler. Operative finding suggested that it was caused by an incidental injury of the artery by a staple.

Herpes zoster is relatively uncommon after surgery in immunocompetent patients. To our knowledge, there have been no reports of herpes zoster after the resection of a thoracic schwannoma. We report the case of a 48-year-old woman in whom acute shingles developed after the video-assisted thoracic surgical resection of a posterior mediastinal schwannoma adjacent to the 4th thoracic vertebral body. The patient recovered after receiving timely antiviral therapy. Rash and pain are common in patients who have wound infections and contact dermatitis after surgery, so the possible reactivation of vari

Thoracic and cervical paragangliomas (PGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors arising from chromaffin cells of the neural crest progenitors located outside the adrenal gland. We describe our current protocol as a multidisciplinary team for the management of cervical and thoracic PGLs. Surgery is generally considered the treatment of choice as it offers the best chance for cure. For resection of thoracic PGLs, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is the main surgical approach, while open thoracotomy is preferred in case of tumors > 6cm, lacking confirmation of a plane of separation with adj

CASE: We report a 55-year-old woman with bull gore trauma to the lower neck who developed dysphagia and airway compromise due to a retropharyngeal chyle collection. Imaging revealed a prevertebral fluid collection. Surgical drainage, which confirmed chyle, followed by thoracic duct ligation through video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, was required due to a persistent high-output leak.
CONCLUSION: Thoracic duct injury at the cervicothoracic junction is an uncommon but serious complication of trauma. High suspicion, timely diagnosis, and surgical intervention ensure favorable outcomes especial

BACKGROUND: Palmar hyperhidrosis (PH) is a common sympathetic disorder that reduces patient' quality of life. Video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy (VTS) is a popular and effective treatment for PH. However, there is substantial controversy about the treatment of PH with VTS at the T3 or T4 level. We will compare the quality metrics of VTS at T3 versus T4 to determine the optimal level for VTS.
METHODS: We will search PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Cancerlit, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the Google Scholar databases for relevant clinical trials publish

In this report we describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment and outcome of a 45-year-old woman with thoracic endometriosis. Four clinical presentations have been described. The majority have presented with catamenial pneumothorax, followed by hemothorax, hemoptysis and lung nodules. Our patient presented with right-sided hemothorax and lung nodules. Video-assisted thoracoscopic aurgery confirmed the presence of endometrial tissue embedded in the diaphragmatic pleura. Talc pleurodesis alongwith atotal abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy led to a clinical an

Primary hyperhidrosis is an idiopathic disorder, and its definitive treatment is obtained through thoracic sympathectomy. However, this procedure is not exempt from complications and compensatory sweating is the main inconvenience described. In this article, 2 patients were submitted to video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy, and after approximately 8 months they noticed depigmentation of the region corresponding to the blockage of sympathetic stimulus. This fact could be explained by the possible effect of the nervous system on the melanocytes of human skin. Thus, patients with primary hy

We describe a case of Horner syndrome occurring secondary only to the high insertion of a chest tube after video-thoracoscopic apicectomy for spontaneous pneumothorax. Because all other causes could be ruled out, the Authors assume that the lesion to the sympathetic nerve fibres was caused by pressure exerted by the tip of the chest tube. Horner syndrome due to this cause can easily be avoided. The tip of the chest tube should be kept at the level of, or below, the third posterior rib, unless the clinical situation dictates otherwise. This cause of Horner syndrome must be taken into account be

We identified one unique kind of anatomical characteristics of thoracic duct (TD) in four cases using fluorescence thoracoscopy during right lung cancer surgery. In these patients, a collateral branch was gave off from TD at the level of the azygos vein arch, which ran along the superior edge of the azygos vein arch, moving from posterior to anterior, and then turned upward in the anterior mediastinum with complex branching patterns. The branches can be easily injured during surgery, which could lead to postoperative chylothorax.

INTRODUCTION: Early video-assisted thorascopic surgery (VATS) is the recommended intervention for retained hemothorax in trauma patients. Alternative options, such as lytic therapy, to avoid surgery remain controversial. The purpose of this decision analysis was to assess expected costs associated with treatment strategies.
METHODS: A decision tree analysis estimated the expected costs of three initial treatment strategies: 1) VATS, 2) intrapleural tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) lytic therapy, and 3) intrapleural non-TPA lytic therapy. Probability parameters were estimated from published

Gorham-Stout is an extremely rare disease, which is characterized by proliferation of vascular and lymphatic bone structures. A 15-year-old male patient was the diagnosis of Gorham-Stout disease of the cervical spine with chylothorax. Awake thoracoscopic ablation was performed using bronchoscopic tools and awake thoracoscopic debridement of the thoracoscopic cavities and chemical pleurodesis with OK-432 were repeated. The amount of drained liquid was controlled. There was no recurrence of pleural effusion.

Thoracoscopic sympathectomy (VATS) is routinely used to treat severe palmar and axillary hyperhydrosis. The authors present a novel method: one-stage bilateral VATS-sympathectomy. Special considerations also discussed regarding the anaesthesia and operative technique of the procedure. The history of surgical therapy of hyperhidrosis is reviewed briefly, too. The authors conclude that one-stage bilateral VATS-sympathectomy for palmar and axillary severe hyperhidrosis is a safe and effective method, patient satisfaction improves and cost is significantly decreased due to shorter hospital stay.

Hyperthermic intrathoracic chemotherapy (HITHOC) adjunct to surgery for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (MPM) has no definite role. The primary objective of this pilot-trial was to evaluate the feasibility for future large studies. The study design was a prospective randomized three-centric pilot trial. We recruited patients diagnosed with MPM and prospectively assigned them to two groups: Group A: Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) talc pleurodesis or Group B: Video-assisted P/D plus HITHOC. From November-2011 to July-2017 24 males and 3 females, with a median age of 68-years were enrolled

Postoperative bronchial stump failure is a life-threatening complication, and several surgical approaches and procedures have been developed to close the stump. In this report, we describe a case of left mainstem bronchial stump diastasis after pneumonectomy for lung cancer, in which the bronchial stump was re-closed using a contralateral approach with video-assisted thoracic surgery, with good success. The left main bronchus was closed with an automatic stapler device, but the stump reopened and left pyothorax developed postoperatively. Emergent intratracheal intubation and ventilation was re
