Defining Cervical Elongation: A Prospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: Our primary aim was to define cervical elongation (CE) using the following methods: (1) measurement of pathology specimen, (2) physician perception, (3) intraoperative estimate of anterior cervical length, and (4) office Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification (POP-Q) points C and D. Our secondary aim was to determine whether these definitions correlate with perioperative outcomes. METHODS: Women undergoing vaginal hysterectomy and prolapse repair were enrolled. Office POP-Q measurements were collected. Estimates of cervical length were made based on points C minus D of the POP-Q and

Psychedelic 5-HT2A agonist increases spontaneous and evoked 5-Hz oscillations in visual and retrosplenial cortex.

Visual perception appears largely stable in time. However, psychophysical studies have revealed that theta waves (4-8 Hz) can modulate perception and have been linked to various cognitive states and functions. Neither the contribution of theta waves to cortical activity nor their impact during aberrant brain states have been resolved at high spatiotemporal scales. Here, using cortex-wide population voltage imaging in awake mice, we found that bouts of 5-Hz oscillations in the visual cortex are accompanied by similar oscillations in the retrosplenial cortex, occurring both spontaneously and evo

Neuromodulation of the left auditory cortex with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has no effect on the categorical perception of speech sounds.

Temporal cue analysis in auditory stimulus is essential in the perception of speech sounds. The effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on auditory temporal processing remains unclear. In this study, we examined whether tDCS applied over the left auditory cortex (AC) has a polarity-specific behavioral effect on the categorical perception of speech sounds whose temporal features are modulated. Sixteen healthy volunteers in each group were received anodal, cathodal, or sham tDCS. A phonetic categorization task including auditory stimuli with varying voice onset time was performe

Evidence of both brainstem and auditory cortex involvement in categorical perception for Chinese lexical tones.

The categorical perception of lexical tones is important to understand tonal languages. Recent studies have provided electrophysiological evidence for the categorical perception of lexical tones at the cortical level; however, whether neural correlates exist at subcortical levels remain unknown. In this study, by using across-category and within-category lexical tone contrasts with the equivalent physical interval, we recorded deviance detection activities at both the brainstem (reflected by frequency following response) and cortical levels (reflected by mismatch negativity) simultaneously. We

The neuroanatomy of age perception.

The concept of age is a fundamental aspect of mental life. However, it is not clear whether age is more an autobiographical detail we remember, a number indicating the years we live, or an inherent part of our subjective self-perception. An insight may be inferred from the underlying neuroanatomy. To investigate the neuroanatomical basis of age perception, we used lesion analysis in 7 patients with age-disorientation due to acute stroke, as compared to a control group of 9 age-oriented patients. Age-disoriented patients underestimated their age by 17.8±5.0 years. Lesion analysis indicated main

The brain frequency tuning function for facial emotion discrimination: An ssVEP study.

Steady-state visual evoked potentials have only been applied recently to the study of face perception. We used this method to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of expression perception in the human brain and test the prediction that, as in the case of identity perception, the optimal frequency for facial expression would also be in the range of 5-6 Hz. We presented facial expressions at different flickering frequencies (2-8 Hz) to human observers while recording their brain electrical activity. Our modified adaptation paradigm contrasted blocks with varying expressions versus blocks with

Impaired visual cortical processing of affective facial information in schizophrenia.

Facial emotion perception impairment in schizophrenia is currently viewed as abnormal affective processing. Facial emotion perception also relies on visual processing. Yet, visual cortical processing of facial emotion is not well understood in this disorder. We measured perceptual thresholds for detecting facial fear and happiness in patients (n=23) and controls (n=23), and adjusted emotion intensity of facial stimuli (via morphing between images of neutral and emotive expressions) for each subject. We then evaluated activations of the visual cortex and amygdala during the performance of perce

Are speech perception deficits associated with developmental dyslexia?

Phonological awareness and phoneme identification tasks were administered to dyslexic children and both chronological age (CA) and reading-level (RL) comparison groups. Dyslexic children showed less sharply defined categorical perception of a bath-path continuum varying voice onset time when compared to the CA but not the RL group. The dyslexic children were divided into two subgroups based on phoneme awareness. Dyslexics with low phonemic awareness made poorer /b/-/p/ distinctions than both CA and RL groups, but dyslexics with normal phonemic awareness did not. Examination of individual profi

Perceiving temporal rhythms in Sahelian soundscapes of Senegal: A pilot interdisciplinary study bridging psychoacoustics, ecology, and anthropologya).

At the intersection of ecological, psychoacoustic, and anthropological perspectives, this study examines how listeners living in Senegal's Sahelian region perceive seasonal and diurnal patterns in local soundscapes. Field recordings representing rainy and dry seasons, as well as different times of day, were first characterized using ecoacoustic analyses that revealed differences in spectro-temporal modulations. The recordings were then presented to two groups: Senegalese pastoralists (Peul herders) living in the Ferlo (n = 9) and a French control group with no prior exposure to the region (n =

Training of pitch contour perception: Influence of pitch processing abilities and multisensory interactions.

Pitch contour processing is critical in music and speech processing, and is likely to be hampered in peripheral and central auditory disorders. Pitch processing is typically altered in congenital amusia, a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits of music perception and production, which are related to altered pitch processing. In this study, we examined the effects of multisensory (audio-visual, AV) versus unisensory (auditory-only, A) pitch contour training on the ability to discriminate pitch direction changes in individuals with amusia and their matched control participants. A

Brain correlates of speech perception in schizophrenia patients with and without auditory hallucinations.

The experience of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVH, "hearing voices") in schizophrenia has been found to be associated with reduced auditory cortex activation during perception of real auditory stimuli like tones and speech. We re-examined this finding using 46 patients with schizophrenia (23 with frequent AVH and 23 hallucination-free), who underwent fMRI scanning while they heard words, sentences and reversed speech. Twenty-five matched healthy controls were also examined. Perception of words, sentences and reversed speech all elicited activation of the bilateral superior temporal cortex,

A General Audiovisual Temporal Processing Deficit in Adult Readers With Dyslexia.

PURPOSE: Because reading is an audiovisual process, reading impairment may reflect an audiovisual processing deficit. The aim of the present study was to test the existence and scope of such a deficit in adult readers with dyslexia. METHOD: We tested 39 typical readers and 51 adult readers with dyslexia on their sensitivity to the simultaneity of audiovisual speech and nonspeech stimuli, their time window of audiovisual integration for speech (using incongruent /aCa/ syllables), and their audiovisual perception of phonetic categories. RESULTS: Adult readers with dyslexia showed less sensitiv

Primary or secondary tasks? Dual-task interference between cyclist hazard perception and cadence control using cross-modal sensory aids with rider assistance bike computers.

This research investigated the risks involved in bicycle riding while using various sensory modalities to deliver training information. To understand the risks associated with using bike computers, this study evaluated hazard perception performance through lab-based simulations of authentic riding conditions. Analysing hazard sensitivity (d') of signal detection theory, the rider's response time, and eye glances provided insights into the risks of using bike computers. In this study, 30 participants were tested with eight hazard perception tasks while they maintained a cadence of 60 ± 5 RPM an

Modulatory effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation on perception and pain thresholds in healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is effective in modulating sensory and pain perception thresholds in healthy subjects as to further explore mechanisms of tDCS in pain relief. METHODS: Twenty healthy subjects received stimulation with tDCS under four different conditions of stimulation: anodal tDCS of the primary motor cortex (M1), dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), occipital cortex (V1), and sham tDCS. The order of conditions was randomized and counterbalanced across subjects. Perception threshold and pain threshold to p

Time moving 100-fold slower: time distortion as a diagnostic clue in anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: The primary symptoms in the early stages of anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis are psychiatric manifestations, making it difficult to distinguish from psychiatric disorders. While anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis requires a completely different treatment approach, the specific psychiatric features of the condition remain poorly identified. Although previous studies have suggested that altered perceptions may be characteristic, few case reports focus on altered perceptions of time or time distortion, a phenomenon closely linked to NMDA receptor dysfunction as seen in individuals using N
