PURPOSE: We reviewed data to determine outcomes for 21 consecutive Vancouver type B1 or type C periprosthetic fractures that we treated between 2001 and 2008 using a nickel-titanium shape-memory sawtooth-arm embracing fixator.
METHODS: The study participants were 12 men and 9 women (mean age, 70.8 years; range, 42-85 years). The average duration of follow-up monitoring was 39.7 months (range, 1-78 months). This investigation is an ongoing clinical and radiographic analysis of a titanium tapered-wedge femoral component with a proximal plasma-spray porous coating. Integral femoral stems (Biomet, Warsaw, IN) were implanted in 200 hips in 186 patients. Nineteen patients died before 10-year follow-up, and 50 patients were lost to follow-up. OBJECTIVE: Since 1993, titanium prostheses have been used in Europe as a biocompatible implant for ossicular reconstruction. More recently, the titanium ossicular prosthesis has become more widely available in the United States as a newer means of surgical restoration of hearing. We will review the hearing results of patients who have undergone tympano-ossiculoplasty using a titanium total ossicular replacement prosthesis (TOP). We will compare these results to our previously published results using the porous polyethylene TOP.

Intramedullary nailing with a solid titanium nail can result in significant bone ingrowth. Failure of an implant requires removal for replacement with another device. Previous methods have included use of extractors for cannulated nails. When extractors are not available or are inadequate, a simple retrograde push-out method can be used as described here.

The left mandibular premolars were extracted from five adult dogs. After twelve weeks, a box-shaped osteotomy of the alveolar bone was carried out and two 10 mm implants were placed 5 mm into the transport alveolar segment, leaving 5 mm exposed.
