OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and correlates of syphilis among pregnant women in rural areas of South China.
METHODS: Point-of-care syphilis testing was provided at 71 health facilities in less developed, rural areas of Guangdong Province. Positive samples were confirmed at a local referral center by toluidine red unheated serum tests (TRUST) and Treponema pallidum particle agglutination (TPPA) tests.
RESULTS: Altogether 27,150 pregnant women in rural Guangdong were screened for syphilis. 106 (0.39%) syphilis cases were diagnosed, of which 78 (73.6%) received treatment for syphilis

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Epidermal injury is common but the accuracy of visual methods is significantly impacted by the inherent skin pigmentation. We examined imaging and fluorescence techniques to quantify tissue injury as a function of skin color.
METHODS: Epidermal and mucosal scratches were created in 20 light- (L(*) 68.2+/-2.3) and 20 dark-skinned (L(*) 46.4+/-5.2) females. Injured and uninjured sites were treated with toluidine blue (TB), fluorescein (FL) and a TB/FL mixture and photographed under conditions of white and fluorescent light. The survey included 151 rats from several carcinogenicity studies up to 104 weeks and 260 rats from short-term studies up to 52 weeks. All studies were performed during the period 1990-1996. Correlation of histopathology with the behavior of cutaneous mastocytomas in 85 cats revealed two distinct histologic subtypes which were predictive of biologic behavior. An autopsy case of pseudomesotheliomatous carcinoma of the right lung in a 56-year-old man occupationally exposed to stone dust is presented. From open biopsy specimens in which polyhedral epithelium-like cells appeared arranged in nests, sheets, and trabecula without apparent tubular pattern, a malignant pleural mesothelioma was suspected. At autopsy, the right pleural cavity was obliterated by the tumor mass which covered the collapsed pulmonary parenchyma and was clearly demarcated from it. Seven families affected with Hurler's syndrome have been studied using the methods of cell culture. Skin fibroblasts obtained from the skin of 7 patients with Hurler's syndrome contained metachromatic granules when stained for mucopolysaccharides with toluidine blue O and alcian blue, whereas fibroblasts from normal subjects contained no metachromatic granules.
