Retention procedures for stabilising tooth position after treatment with orthodontic braces.

BACKGROUND: Without a phase of retention after successful orthodontic treatment, teeth tend to 'relapse', that is, to return to their initial position. Retention is achieved by fitting fixed or removable retainers to provide stability to the teeth while avoiding damage to teeth and gums. Removable retainers can be worn full- or part-time. Retainers vary in shape, material, and the way they are made. Adjunctive procedures are sometimes used to try to improve retention, for example, reshaping teeth where they contact ('interproximal reduction'), or cutting fibres around teeth ('percision'). This

Management of awake bruxism: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Awake bruxism is a masticatory muscle activity reported by approximately one in four individuals in the general population. Bruxism can have various manifestations such as tooth clenching, grinding or bracing, with different possible clinical consequences, ranging from tooth wear and fractures of dental restorations to orofacial pain related to the musculoskeletal overload. However, no official guidelines exist on the management of awake bruxism. The aim of this systematic review was to review published literature on management of awake bruxism. METHODS: The review followed the PRI

Evaluation of Surface Roughness and Microbial Adhesion of Primary Esthetic Crowns: An In Vitro Study.

BACKGROUND: Surface roughness plays a crucial role in microbial adhesion and retention on dental crowns, contributing to secondary infections and the development of periodontal diseases through bacterial plaque accumulation. In treating pulpitis of primary teeth via pulpectomy, dental crowns are often used as full-coverage restorative solutions. Among the most widely utilized crowns are stainless steel and zirconia crowns. However, zirconia crowns present drawbacks, such as excessive tooth reduction and increased wear on opposing teeth, while stainless steel crowns (SSCs) pose esthetic limitat

Minimally Invasive Multidisciplinary Management of Tetracycline-stained and Congenitally Missing Teeth.

AIM: This clinical case report describes the multidisciplinary treatment workflow for a complex rehabilitation case to correct skeletal class II malocclusion, bilateral congenitally missing premolars, and improve the esthetic smile in tetracycline-stained teeth. BACKGROUND: The anterior esthetic zone plays a crucial role in the overall appearance of a patient's smile. Tooth discoloration and congenitally missing premolars are frequently reported in young adults, affecting both esthetics and function. The tetracycline-stained teeth and visible absence of premolars can impact a patient's self-e

Mortality analysis of Pleistocene bears and its paleoanthropological relevance.

Bear bones and Paleolithic stone artefacts often co-occur in Pleistocene cave deposits of Eurasia, raising the question of how these associations come about and the need for effective methods with which to obtain a clear answer. Building upon knowledge of modern bears, I present a method for testing two competing hypotheses about the causes of bear mortality in hibernation contexts. The first hypothesis proposes that age-dependent deaths resulted from non-violent causes (principally starvation), implying that bears' presence in a cave was not linked in time to human activities there. The secon

Synergistic effects of bioactive silica and fluoride in enamel protection and repair: an in vitro study.

Erosive tooth wear (ETW) compromises enamel integrity. This study investigated the synergistic effects of bioactive silica and fluoride, as well as the independent performance of bioactive silica, in protecting sound enamel and repairing previously eroded enamel under erosive-abrasive challenges. An in vitro laboratory design was adopted using two models: (1) a protective model with sound enamel and (2) a remineralizing model with pre-eroded enamel. Ninety-six bovine enamel blocks were randomly allocated to four dentifrice groups (n=12/group) within two experimental models: RGS/NaF (bioactive

Ingestive mastication in horses resembles rumination but not ingestive mastication in cattle and camels.

Horses achieve a higher degree of particle size reduction through ingestive mastication than functional ruminants. We characterized mastication using chew-monitoring halters (RumiWatch) in six domestic horses, cattle, and Bactrian camels each. All animals were offered grass hay of the same batch for 15 min. In cattle and camels, measurements were continued after eating until rumination was observed. Except for one horse, 96% of the horses' ingestive mastication data were identified as "rumination" by the proprietary RumiWatch algorithm, whereas ingestion and rumination by cattle and camels wer

The evolution of dual meat and milk cattle husbandry in Linearbandkeramik societies.

Cattle dominate archaeozoological assemblages from the north-central Europe between the sixth and fifth millennium BC and are frequently considered as exclusively used for their meat. Dairy products may have played a greater role than previously believed. Selective pressure on the lactase persistence mutation has been modelled to have begun between 6000 and 4000 years ago in central Europe. The discovery of milk lipids in late sixth millennium ceramic sieves in Poland may reflect an isolated regional peculiarity for cheese making or may signify more generalized milk exploitation in north-centr

Continuous dental replacement in a hyper-chisel tooth digging rodent.

Contrary to their reptilian ancestors, which had numerous dental generations, mammals are known to usually develop only two generations of teeth. However, a few mammal species have acquired the ability to continuously replace their dentition by the constant addition of supernumerary teeth moving secondarily toward the front of the jaw. The resulting treadmill-like replacement is thus horizontal, and differs completely from the vertical dental succession of other mammals and their extinct relatives. Despite the developmental implications and prospects regarding the origin of supernumerary teeth

Possible association between obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and sleep bruxism in adults: an umbrella review.

INTRODUCTION: Bruxism is an involuntary motor activity linked to periodontal changes, temporomandibular disorders, and tooth wear. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) involves recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep and may be associated with bruxism and primary snoring. Understanding this relationship could improve diagnosis and clinical management. OBJECTIVES: To assess systematic reviews to determine whether a bidirectional relationship exists between OSAS and bruxism in adults. METHODS: An umbrella systematic review was conducted following PRISMA 2020. Systematic reviews with

Epidemiological survey on the oral health of cattle slaughtered in Goiás, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Good oral health is essential for the performance and welfare of cattle, as it directly affects their feed intake and feed efficiency. However, little is currently known about the epidemiology of dental disease in cattle. METHODS: This study investigated the prevalence of lesions in the dental arcades of 1006 slaughtered cattle. The periodontal evaluation was performed by the same person, using a periodontal probe and flashlight as the heads passed down the slaughter line, and the results were recorded on an odontogram. RESULTS: Of the 1006 slaughtered animals evaluated, 115 (11.

Bioinspired Hierarchical PEEK and Amorphous Silicon Nitride Composite Coatings on Titanium Alloy Biomedical Implants.

Titanium alloys are studied for decades as bone and dental implants, showing great potential in biomedical applications. However, the relatively high stiffness and lack of resistance to bacterial corrosion in titanium-based implants are always a problem. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is emerging significantly as a new biomaterial for tissue engineering scaffolds, due to its excellent biocompatibility and stability, while the mechanical properties of PEEK cannot match those of natural bones and teeth. In biomineralized tissues, the incorporation of bioceramics into the organic matrix provides a s

Are pediatric preformed zirconia crowns comparable to preformed metal crowns? A real-life retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Although minimally and noninvasive caries management are advocated in pediatric dentistry, extensive caries progression often requires endodontic treatment followed by crowning of the tooth. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the success of esthetic preformed zirconia crowns (PZCs) compared to the standard preformed metal crowns (PMCs) after pulpotomy in primary molars retrospectively. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Patients' digital records in a specialized pediatric clinic in Germany were analyzed to include 2- to 9-year-olds, who had received one or more PMCs or PZCs after a pu

Oral processing, sexual selection, and size variation in the circumorbital region of Colobus and Piliocolobus.

OBJECTIVES: The function of the browridge in primates is a subject of enduring debate. Early studies argued for a role in resisting masticatory stresses, but recent studies have suggested sexual signaling as a biological role. We tested associations between circumorbital form, diet, oral processing, and social behavior in two species of colobus monkey-the king colobus (Colobus polykomos) and western red or bay colobus (Piliocolobus badius). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We quantified circumorbital size and dimorphism in a sample of 98 crania. Controlling for age and facial size, we tested whether va
